Maria.
When I opened my eyes that morning, my entire body felt heavy and flushed, as though a sudden fever had settled deep into my bones.
The heavy realization weighed down on me the moment I woke up: today was finally the day. The forced, inescapable wedding with Vincent had arrived.
Yet, despite the looming ceremony, the forced marriage wasn’t what truly tormented my mind—it was Noah.
An agonizing knot tightened in my chest every time I thought of him. Ever since he abruptly severed our mind-link yesterday, I hadn’t heard a single word. The silence was deafening, leaving me trapped in a painful limbo of uncertainty.
Could I actually place my trust in the quadruplets?
Would they truly be capable of pulling off a miracle and helping me escape this nightmare before it was too late?
My thoughts were spiraling out of control when the abrupt tug of the wedding dress snapped me back to reality.
The omega assisting me pulled the metallic zipper up too fast, and it painfully grazed against the bare skin of my back.
I winced, jerking forward slightly at the sharp sting.
"I’m sorry, Luna!" the omega gasped in instant terror.
Before I could even register her reaction, she dropped straight to her knees on the floor, her hands clasped together desperately.
"Spare me, please!"
I rolled my eyes in immediate irritation.
Luna?
That title sent a jolt of pure disgust straight through me. Hearing it applied to me grated on every last nerve in my body. I was not Vincent’s Luna, and no matter what happened today, I would never, ever be his.
"Get up!" I snapped, my voice sharp with annoyance.
Unfortunately, the terrified omega completely misread my sudden outburst. Mistaking my anger toward the title for ruthless cruelness toward her mistake, her panic escalated wildly.
She bowed her head lower and began desperately hitting her forehead against the ground over and over again.
"Spare me, please! Spare me, please!" she continued to cry, her frantic pleas echoing loudly off the walls of the room.
The endless wailing and dramatic groveling pushed me straight over the edge.
Frustrated beyond belief, I gave up entirely on the dressing table. I stood up abruptly, brushed past the kneeling girl, and marched over to sit on the edge of the bed.
I was completely done with this charade. To hell with the makeup, and to hell with the rest of these ridiculous wedding preparations.
I wasn’t actually going to walk down that aisle and marry him anyway, so what was the point of sitting still and allowing them to adorn me like a prized trophy?
I looked over at the trembling girl on the floor, my patience entirely exhausted.
"Get me the veil!" I thundered.
I really couldn’t take in anymore of her pathetic look, as it only made me look fierce.
Scrambling to her feet in an instant, the terrified omega snatched the veil from the dressing table.
She held it out toward me, her hands trembling so violently that the delicate fabric shook in the air between us.
"Here, Luna!" she squeaked, her voice tight with nervous desperation.
I snatched the veil from her grip, the sheer irritation boiling inside me finally snapping my control.
"Don’t refer to me as that!" I snapped firmly, my voice booming and echoing off the walls of the quiet room.
The girl flinched violently. Without missing a beat, she dropped straight back down to her knees and pressed her forehead to the floor once again.
"I won’t, Lycan Princess," she stammered out, her tone dripping with submission.
’Arrrrghhhhh!’ I screamed inwardly, squeezing my eyes shut as sheer frustration surged through me.
I raised a hand and pressed my fingers against my temples, gently massaging my forehead in a vain attempt to soothe the dull, throbbing headache that was rapidly taking root. I was so exhausted, so deeply done with every single person in this house.
"Get out!" I yelled, glaring down at her.
The omega peeked up at me, hesitating for a fleeting second as if paralyzed by uncertainty.
"I said get out!!" I screamed at the absolute top of my voice. Every passing second in her presence was grating on my already frayed nerves, driving me toward the edge of my sanity.
That did it. The girl scrambled back onto her feet and practically bolted out the door, running as though her very life depended on escaping the room.
I stared at the empty doorway, shaking my head. I couldn’t help but wonder what on earth she actually took me for.
A bloodthirsty monster?
Did she truly believe I was capable of the exact same level of cold ruthlessness as Vincent?
A bitter scoff escaped my lips.
Not a chance.
Even so, I was genuinely pissed off. The anger left me entirely drained, stripping away whatever little energy I had left to pretend I cared about this ridiculous event.
I collapsed backward onto the bed, staring up at the ceiling with zero intention or eagerness to step outside and face the circus waiting for me.
My mind began to race again, anxiety creeping into the edges of my frustration. What in the world was taking the quadruplets so long?
Had something gone wrong with the plan?
Right on cue, as if summoned by my desperation, a mind link suddenly snapped open in my head.
Adrien’s rich, unmistakable voice resonated clearly through the mental connection, instantly cutting through the noise in my mind.
"It’s time," he declared, his tone steady, firm, and completely dripping with confidence. "Everything has been set."
Relief flooded my chest so fast it almost took my breath away. Without waiting to reply, I severed the mind link, letting the mental connection go quiet.
A wide, genuine smile spread across my face for the first time all day. Wasting no more time, I sat up, snatched the delicate veil off the mattress, and draped it over my head, letting the sheer fabric fall to cover my face.
