Daniel.
We finally arrived at the Moonbridge pack, and the moment the heavy stone borders came into view, I felt my heart rate spike dangerously.
My pulse hammered against my ribs like a trapped beast, and for a second, I had no idea why it was reacting so violently.
Was it because I was finally on the precipice of getting my long-awaited revenge on the quadruplets?
Or was it something else entirely?
I took a deep, steadying breath to settle my frantic nerves and dismounted from my horse, my boots thudding softly against the dirt as we crossed deeper into the territory.
The towering, familiar stone walls greeted me once again, and a sharp, sudden ache flared right in the middle of my chest. Nostalgia and bitterness twisted inside me. The only memory I genuinely cherished in this cursed pack was the time Maria had kept me company, bringing a warmth to my life that had caused this same heart to race so uncontrollably back then.
I silently turned my head to glance back at her, desperate for a glimpse, but I really couldn’t get a proper view of her. Noah was standing right there, shielding her protectively with his broad body like an unbreakable wall. He was acting like a relentless magnet around her, sticking to her side and refusing to give anyone an opening, and the sight of his possessiveness caused a raw, hollow ache in my chest.
I aggressively shook my head, as though the force alone could drive every lingering thought of Maria out of my mind.
The memories clung stubbornly to the edges of my consciousness, refusing to loosen their grip no matter how desperately I tried to cast them aside.
I clenched my jaw, silently forcing myself back under control. This wasn’t the time to dwell on her or allow my emotions to cloud my judgment.
I simply couldn’t afford the distraction—not now. There was a far more urgent, far more dangerous matter demanding my complete attention, and allowing my mind to wander, even for a single second, could prove to be a costly mistake.
Drawing in a slow, controlled breath, I forcefully pushed every stray thought aside before snapping my full attention back to the task at hand.
My eyes immediately locked onto the quadruplets, my expression hardening as my jaw tightened with growing impatience. I held their gazes without blinking, unwilling to give them even the slightest indication that I had been distracted moments earlier.
"So where the hell is this supposed proof?" I demanded at last, my voice low yet razor-sharp, every syllable dripping with barely restrained impatience and challenge.
"In the study," Aidan said calmly, his tone completely unbothered as he turned and began walking down the grand corridor toward the pack house’s central office.
I took another deep breath, my hands clenching into tight fists at my sides as I followed closely after him and his three brothers, the heavy silence of the manor pressing in on us from all sides.
We stepped through the massive double doors of the room, and Davian halted near the back of the space, turning to face me as he gestured toward a hidden entrance set into the far wall.
"Here—this is where the evidence of our innocence lies," Davian said, pointing directly at the heavy wooden door within the study, his expression unreadable as he waited for me to make the next move.
I raised my eyebrows in a mixture of deep confusion and burning curiosity, staring at the hidden doorway before looking back at the four brothers.
The quadruplets stepped forward and slowly pushed the heavy door open, revealing a dusty, dimly lit chamber beyond. Stepping across the threshold, I saw that it was indeed a dedicated seclusion room, constructed with four separate, modest bed compartments and a heavily reinforced section specifically designed and reinforced for wolf shifting.
I chuckled slightly, a low, skeptical sound that offered no humor. "How on earth does a secluded room prove your innocence?" I asked, my voice sharp with growing impatience as I crossed my arms over my chest.
"The walls won’t lie," Damien said gently, his tone unnervingly soft as he gestured toward the far side of the chamber. "Check the stone. Every strange encounter, vision, and shift we experienced during our time in seclusion was documented directly on the walls, with the exact date inscribed right below each entry."
A part of me instantly wanted to dismiss it, suspecting it was all an elaborate, staged trap built to trick me into letting my guard down.
But looking around at the four brothers—at the raw, dead-serious expressions etched across their faces—I could tell in my gut that this was no joke.
Driven by an urgent need to know, I immediately walked over to the reinforced wolf-shifting compartment. Sure enough, the solid stone was covered in rough, deliberate carvings—endless lines of frantic handwriting with clear dates neatly etched beneath every single paragraph.
I began scanning through the entries, my eyes darting frantically over the rough stone face until I suddenly stopped. There, carved deep into the rock, was the exact date of the night my entire life was ripped away from me—the day the massacre had taken place.
I froze, the blood in my veins turning to pure ice.
The detailed carving described an agonizing ritual of unbearable agony, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that the quadruplets had indeed been locked away inside this very room on that fateful night, suffering through a terrible, agonizing pain while my family was being slaughtered miles away.
So...they hadn’t been there.
’No! No! No!’ I muttered frantically to myself, my mind spiraling into complete panic. ’This couldn’t be happening! This makes no sense!’
A terrifying wave of dizziness washed over me as my whole reality shattered into pieces right in front of my eyes.
If the quadruplets were truly innocent of the bloody tragedy that destroyed my life, then who on earth had actually massacred my pack?
Who had gone through the trouble of impersonating the powerful Moonbridge Alphas, wearing their uniforms and carrying their crests, and why would anyone construct such an elaborate, cruel setup?
And most sickening of all—why had the Lycan Prince taken me in, saved my life, and spent the last two years personally ensuring that I grew strong enough to carry out my bloody revenge against these four men?
Who had been manipulating me this entire time?
