Anabel.

I was so sure that my face had lost all its colour at this moment, the blood completely draining from my cheeks as a sudden, icy panic seized my entire body.

How do I escape from this nightmare of a conversation?

Noah was actually so smart, his sharp instincts making him far too dangerous to deceive. I was so sure that if this relentless interrogation continued for even a few more seconds, he would be able to perceive that I had done something so terribly, unforgivably wrong.

I actually cannot let anyone find out about the forbidden secret between Vincent and me. If the truth were to ever see the light of day, it would utterly destroy everything.

I immediately forced a deep frown onto my face, masking my rising terror behind a barrier of cold indifference, and clenched my hands tightly behind my back so he wouldn’t see them trembling.

"Anabel, speak up!" Noah yelled at the top of his voice, the harsh command echoing off the stone walls of the quiet room.

He was trying to use that commanding, authoritative voice that, once upon a time, would have forced me to oblige instantly—the voice I used to obey simply because I was so desperately terrified he would leave me behind.

But I guess that pathetic trick won’t work on me now.

"Don’t you dare yell at me, Noah!" I spat out, lacing my words with every ounce of pure irritation and deep disgust I could possibly muster up. "Know your place..." I paused, stepping closer and looking down my nose at him with icy disdain. "...You are clearly nothing to me, so you have no right to question me!" I added firmly, my voice unyielding and cold.

Noah froze where he stood, thoroughly caught off guard by the venom dripping from my voice. His broad shoulders visibly tensed, stiffening beneath the weight of my words as though my tone had struck him with the force of a physical blow instead of mere sound.

For several long, agonizing seconds, he didn’t say a single word, as he simply stared at me.

His eyes searched every inch of my face in complete, stunned silence, desperately trying to make sense of the woman standing before him. There was confusion written plainly across his features, mixed with disbelief so profound that it almost made my resolve crumble.

It was as though he had never truly seen me before.

As though, in the space of a single conversation, I had transformed into someone entirely unfamiliar—a complete stranger wearing the face of the woman he thought he knew.

The look in his eyes twisted painfully inside my chest.

But what else could I do?

It was better for Noah to hate me, to believe I had become nothing more than a cold, heartless monster, than for him to keep digging beneath my carefully crafted cruelty and uncover the dark, ruinous truth I had no choice but to carry alone.

"Anabel, what exactly has gotten over you?" he asked me in sheer disbelief, his voice dropping as he shook his head slowly. "This isn’t the girl I know!" he added, his eyes searching mine for any trace of the person he used to care about.

"No, Noah!" I paused, forcing my gaze to snap away from his so he couldn’t catch the desperate lie flickering in my eyes. "You have never known me." I slowly turned my back on him and walked toward the tall glass window, looking out over the shadowed courtyard below. "This is exactly who I have always been." I added, keeping my voice as cold and hollow as possible.

"No!" Noah retorted harshly, stepping forward as his voice cracked with frustration. "What did Vincent do to you?" he asked.

I froze.

My breath hitched in my chest, and I immediately felt all the hair on my body stand up as the raw sound of Vincent’s name cut through the heavy silence of the room. A sudden wave of icy dread washed over my skin, making my heart hammer violently against my ribs.

Did he know? Did he know that Vincent was the Lycan prince?

’Oh no! I cannot let him find out what actually happened between us.’

"Have you gone mad, Noah?" I asked, forcing a sneer onto my face as I turned back around to meet his intense gaze. "And who on earth is this Vincent that you are accusing completely out of the blue?" I asked, feigning total innocence while my stomach churned with anxiety.

"Vincent is the Lycan prince!" Noah declared firmly, taking another threatening step into the room as his jaw set in a rigid line. "Now tell me what exactly it is he has done to you..." He paused, his hands clenching into tight fists as he gritted his teeth in rising fury. "...I swear I will kill him with my own bare hands!" he added, his voice vibrating with a dangerous, protective rage.

I immediately burst out laughing, a sharp, bitter sound that echoed unnervingly off the cold stone walls.

Why on earth was he getting all worked up like this?

It was almost pathetic. It wasn’t as if he actually loved me or ever truly cared for me the way I had once desperately wished he would. This sudden act of righteous anger was nothing more than his overbearing pride talking.

I turned back toward the window, staring out into the dark night air, and hardened my heart against the painful sting in my chest.

"I won’t repeat myself, Noah, so listen very carefully," I said firmly, letting every single word drop with heavy, absolute finality. I paused, deliberately allowing the suffocating silence to stretch between us so my words could fully sink in. "From now on, I don’t want to have anything to do with you ever again."

I took a deep, steadying breath, burying every trace of fear and regret deep down where he could never reach it.

"Anabel is completely dead to you!" I added.
