Maria.

My face was still flushed a deep, burning red as I hurried down the quiet stone corridor, heading straight toward the guest quarters to get the room cleaned and arranged for our stay.

In my mind, I had genuinely thought there was no real need for Noah and me to stay in separate rooms anymore.

We had faced far too many dangers together to pretend there was still a distance between us, and thankfully, he had bought the idea without putting up a fight.

I walked faster and faster, my boots clicking against the floorboards, because I could still vividly feel the intense heat of his gaze lingering on my back as I walked away.

The very moment I rounded the corner, ensuring I was completely out of his line of sight, I leaned my back against the cool wall and tried to calm my wildly racing heart.

However, I didn’t get the chance to catch my breath or compose myself. The instant I stepped forward to resume walking, I collided right into someone who was turning the exact same corner, and something heavy fell from their hands, clattering loudly onto the floor between us.

Startled, I looked up and realized it was Beta Torin!

"Greetings, Beta!" I said immediately, my eyes widening in polite panic as I instinctively bowed my head down respectfully before the elder.

Before I could hold the pose for more than a second, Beta Torin reached out, his weathered hands moving slowly and gently to raise my head back up.

"There is absolutely no need for that, my Lady!" he said warmly, a soft, respectful smile crinkling the corners of his eyes. He immediately tried to lower his own head in a deep, formal bow toward me, but I quickly reached out and stopped him, uncomfortable with such reverence from someone so revered.

’What on earth does he mean by calling me ’my lady’?’

I was thoroughly confused by the formal title, but I decided not to probe further or stress him out with unnecessary questions, as he was a well-respected, elderly man who deserved nothing but peace and deference.

Stepping back, I immediately bent down to retrieve whatever had fallen to the ground during our sudden collision.

It was an old, heavy scroll, bound securely with an intricate cord that had clearly been wrapped around it several times to keep the fragile parchment tightly rolled.

The surface was worn with age, its edges slightly weathered, while dense rows of carefully written records filled almost every visible space. Yet, somehow, despite being bound so securely, it had rolled open, leaving part of its contents exposed.

My eyes briefly skimmed over the aged parchment as I bent down and gathered it carefully into my hands, making sure not to damage the delicate material.

"What could possibly be documented inside this scroll?" I wondered inwardly, my curiosity instantly piqued as I held the mysterious records out, intending to return them to the Beta.

I should have simply handed it back.

I knew that.

But curiosity got the better of me.

Out of sheer, overwhelming curiosity, I slowly began rolling the scattered parchment back into its original shape right there in the quiet hallway.

My fingers moved carefully along the aged material, gradually bringing the loose section together as my eyes unconsciously wandered over the tightly packed lines of writing.

Then, completely by chance, my gaze stopped.

My own name was written across the parchment.

I froze mid-motion.

For a moment, I could neither move nor look away. My breath hitched sharply in my chest as a sudden wave of confusion washed over me, leaving me staring at the familiar letters as though my eyes had somehow deceived me.

What was my name doing there?

The thought barely formed before I forced myself to pull together, quickly regaining my composure.

I slowly lifted my head, my expression carefully controlled, and snapped my gaze directly toward Beta Torin, my eyes locking firmly with his.

"Why on earth does this document have my name on it?" I asked him without a single second of hesitation, my voice trembling slightly with mounting suspicion.

"My lady, Alpha Damien explicitly requested for this record to be brought to him immediately," he explained with an unnervingly calm composure, stretching his weathered hand outward as he tried to gently collect the scroll back from my grip.

But I held onto the thick parchment tightly, refusing to let it go for even a moment until I could see and understand every single word written inside it.

"My lady, please... hand the scroll over to me now," he said once more, his voice remaining low, steady, and infuriatingly patient.

I shook my head immediately, my heart hammering against my ribs as I took a quick, defensive step backward, pulling the document close to my chest to keep it far out of his reach.

"What exactly are the quadruplets planning to do with me?" I asked in a sudden, overwhelming surge of panic, my mind racing through the absolute worst-case scenarios. "Does this official record contain information on what they could possibly want to—"

I continued frantically, but I didn’t even get to finish my sentence before Beta Torin spoke out loudly, his commanding tone cutting sharply through the quiet corridor.

"Snap out of such absurd, dangerous thoughts right this instance!" he said loudly, his eyes fixing on mine with an intense, unyielding seriousness. "The quadruplets would never, ever bring any harm to you." He paused, letting his breath out in a heavy sigh as he gestured toward the parchment in my trembling hands. "If you truly still harbor such dark doubts in your heart, then by all means, go right ahead and read through it yourself!" he added firmly.

Driven by a desperate, burning need for the truth, I immediately raised the scroll higher into the light, unrolling the parchment fully, and carefully went through each and every line of the dense, detailed writing.

As my eyes darted across the ancient ink, tracing the shocking truth documented line by line, my eyes widened in complete, utter shock.

’This simply can’t be real!’ I exclaimed inwardly, my entire body going rigid as a wave of sheer disbelief crashed over me. ’How on earth could something like this have possibly happened without me ever knowing?’
