Noah.
I left the room Anabel was in completely devastated, my mind reeling and my heavy boots dragging across the floor with every step.
She was truly dead to me?
The harsh words echoed endlessly inside my head like a cruel, repetitive riddle. I really couldn’t fathom what exactly it was that had happened to her in the short space of just a few months.
How had a girl I once knew so intimately transformed into someone so cold, distant, and filled with venom?
Something was terribly, dangerously off with Anabel, and I knew in my gut that I desperately needed to find out the truth before it destroyed us both.
I walked down the long, dimly lit corridor, my heart aching for a sense of comfort. I was heading directly toward the guest room to seek solace and joy in Maria’s warm, soothing arms, desperate to forget the bitter confrontation I had just endured. But as I rounded the corner, I froze.
Maria was standing in the middle of the hallway, frozen like a statue, appearing completely lost in a dark, overwhelming trance. Her face was pale, and her eyes stared blankly ahead as if the world around her had ceased to exist. Standing right beside her was Beta Torin, his weathered face solemn as he stared at her with deep, unreadable sympathy.
The heavy atmosphere in the hall felt strangely off, thick with an unspoken, suffocating tragedy.
"Maria?" I called out softly, my voice laced with immediate concern as I cautiously approached the two of them.
She didn’t answer me immediately. It was as though she were entirely lost in a private, agonizing world of her own making, completely deaf to the sound of my voice.
Frustrated and growing increasingly uneasy, I immediately turned my sharp gaze toward the old man. "What on earth is going on here?" I asked him, my tone demandingly sharp.
"My lady..." Beta Torin started to explain, his voice low and hesitant, but he didn’t even get the chance to finish his sentence.
The moment my voice registered in her ears, Maria snapped out of her daze, immediately turned toward me, and threw her arms around my torso, wrapping me in a desperately tight, trembling hug. She buried her face into my chest, clinging to my tunic as if I were the only anchor keeping her tethered to the earth.
"Noah!" she called out, her voice breaking into a fragile, shuddering sob against my chest.
I instantly wrapped my arms around her, holding her back firmly against my body. I rested my chin on her head and patted her back softly, letting my protective scent wrap around her to ground her frantic energy.
"I’m right here for you, Maria," I said calmly, my voice dropping to a tender murmur. "It’s okay. Take your time and tell me what happened." I added, my heart breaking at the raw distress radiating off her body.
I closed my eyes for a brief second, a heavy wave of exhaustion and frustration washing over me. How on earth could the two women I cared about the most in this entire world be going through such deep, mysterious agony at the exact same time?
It was simply so terribly, heartbreakingly unfortunate.
"Noah, I really do have a twin sister," Maria cried out, her voice muffled against my chest as she sobbed uncontrollably in my arms. "They have already found her... the proof is right here."
I held her even tighter, wrapping my arms firmly around her waist to ensure she felt my strength and knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that she wasn’t alone in this overwhelming moment.
"That is a good thing, Maria!" I said calmly, stroking her hair gently in an effort to soothe her frantic heart. "You finally have a blood family. You can finally reconnect with her and build the life you both were robbed of!"
Maria’s shoulders shook violently as fresh tears soaked through my shirt. "I can’t!" She paused, gasping for air as her voice broke under the weight of her grief. "I am not even sure I can ever forgive her for all the terrible things she has done to me over the years... but I am just now realizing she hadn’t actually done any of them on purpose." She choked on a heavy sob, clinging to me desperately. "She has been manipulated this whole time."
"How?" I asked, my brows furrowing in genuine, deep curiosity as I looked down at her. "Manipulated by whom?"
"It’s Patricia!" she blurted out, the name dropping like a heavy curse after a long, suffocating pause.
My eyes twitched violently, and my entire body went rigid.
It simply couldn’t be Patricia. Not the same cruel, heartless girl who had countlessly mocked, mercilessly bullied, and publicly humiliated Maria during our days at the academy. My blood ran cold as the shocking reality crashed down on me. How on earth did a sick twist of fate like this happen?
It was certainly no wonder Maria was reacting like this—standing in the hallway completely shattered and heartbroken instead of being joyous about finding her long-lost flesh and blood.
"It’s alright, Maria," I said softly, swallowing down my own rising anger and shock as I tried my best to get a firm hold of myself for her sake. "Listen to me carefully: if you don’t want to accept her into your life after everything she put you through, then don’t!" I added in a soothing tone. "You owe her nothing."
"But she was manipulated into doing it all!" Maria protested through her heavy sobbing, her soft heart warring with the years of trauma she had endured. "She is...in a way, she is completely innocent of the hatred she carried!"
"I know, Maria, I hear you," I said, looking directly into her tear-filled eyes with absolute seriousness. "I understand the situation is complicated, but if you don’t truly want to accept her right now, then please don’t force yourself to do so!" I declared firmly, letting her know I would stand by her choice no matter what she decided.
