Daniel.

Maria’s harsh, cutting words pierced deep into my heart like a silver blade. I know she had already made it abundantly clear that she didn’t want to have anything to do with me ever again, but I am only human after all—or rather, a wolf in human form, cursed with feelings I cannot easily discard.

I just can’t simply forget my deep, burning feelings for her out of the blue, as if they never existed. Even though I have officially found my true mate, a dark, stubborn part of my soul still desperately wants Maria to be with me.

Therefore, her sad, broken countenance bothers me a lot. Seeing her tears and knowing she was in such immense pain tore through my composure, leaving an agonizing ache in my chest that I couldn’t shake off.

I really wished, more than anything, that I could go back in time to the days when she was completely carefree around me—the days when she willingly kept me company, sharing laughter and quiet moments within the safety of this Moonbridge pack.

If only I had come into her life much sooner...especially before Noah ever had the chance to anchor himself in her heart.

Would she have chosen me instead?

Would I have been the one holding her while she cried?

"Arrrrghhhhh!" I screamed inwardly, a primal roar of utter frustration echoing inside the dark walls of my mind as I violently shook my head repeatedly to clear the agonizing thoughts.

I don’t want to give up on our love or accept that we are truly over, but at the exact same time, a cold, realistic part of me is secretly glad she didn’t choose me.

If she had, she would have inevitably been dragged straight into the crossfire, becoming an innocent pawn in this dangerous, bloody game that was currently being played.

I took a long, deep breath, trying to steady my racing heart as I turned back to stare once again at Maria’s retreating figure as she disappeared down the dim hallway.

Once she was completely gone, I finally forced myself to look away and headed straight toward the quiet room I had stayed in before.

The atmosphere in the estate was growing heavier by the minute, as though the tension hanging in the air had become something almost tangible. The more I thought about everything that had happened, the more unsettled I became.

The Lycan Prince needed me to kill the quadruplets so badly, pushing for their blood with a relentless, unnatural desperation that I could no longer ignore. His determination had always seemed absolute, as though their deaths were the only outcome he would accept.

But at the end of the day, after looking at everything laid before us and considering the truth that had finally begun to surface, those four brothers were completely innocent of the crimes that had been thrust upon them.

So why on earth had he orchestrated all these lies?

What was his ultimate motive in destroying them?

Why had he gone to such extraordinary lengths to deceive me?

Why had he told me such a massive, elaborate lie and made me believe every word of it?

The more I questioned it, the more disturbing it became.

I mean, he had so clearly and masterfully turned me against the quadruplets, twisting my perception of them until I could barely see them as anything other than the monsters he had painted them to be.

He had taken my anger, my pain, and my trust and carefully shaped them into weapons against those four innocent men.

And because I had believed him, I had wasted two whole years of my life consumed by a burning, relentless hatred that had never truly belonged to me.

And now, I couldn’t stop wondering what had really been behind it all.

I really couldn’t help but wonder what had actually happened on that tragic day in my pack’s history.

What horrifying secret was being kept from me?

At the exact same time, my situation here was rapidly spiraling out of control. The quadruplets were deeply suspicious of me, meaning I couldn’t stay in their pack for much longer without drawing their wrath. Yet, I couldn’t possibly return to the Lycan territory either—not without delivering the quadruplets’ heads to my master.

It wasn’t as if I was particularly eager to go back to that dark, suffocating place anyway, but I didn’t have much of a choice. I desperately needed to take the specialized pill every single month.

And if I don’t get that dosage in time, I will suffer a agonizing death!

I really do hope the quadruplets will take the time to think it all over and actually help me out of this corner!

All I truly want is the raw, unvarnished truth and my ultimate freedom!

That isn’t something so ridiculously hard to ask for, right?

Because, honestly, I was completely exhausted by everything. I was so tired of being a pawn, tired of running, and I just wanted my surviving pack members to be able to live their best, safest lives.

More than that, I desperately wanted my murdered parents and our fallen pack members to be properly avenged, so their restless souls could finally rest in peace.

Suddenly, I stopped dead in my tracks the exact moment I felt a sharp, electric buzz hum against the back of my skull. It was an unmistakable physical connection.

Someone was forcefully trying to breach my mental guards and create a mind link with me.

"Oh no!" I exclaimed in a quiet, horrified whisper as a wave of icy panic instantly flooded my veins. "It is the Lycan Prince!" I added, my breath catching painfully in my chest.

What on earth does he want with me right now?

Panic seized my heart. I knew with absolute certainty that I couldn’t let him completely establish the mind link! If he senses where I am or reads the doubt taking root in my mind, everything is over.

What do I do?

How do I shut him out?
