Damien

I stood completely rotted and frozen in the exact spot that Maria had abandoned me moments ago, my boots glued to the cold stone floor of the corridor.

I stared across the empty space at Noah, and all I could feel surging through my veins was a blinding, suffocating rage. If he really hadn’t selfishly injected himself into Maria’s life, then she would still be ours without a single complaint, safe within the orbit where she belonged.

I know, deep down, that I have hurt her terribly in the past—I carry the guilt of those mistakes every single day. But I am genuinely sorry for every tear she shed, and I am more than ready to do absolutely anything she requests of me, just to make amends and earn a fraction of her trust back.

Yet, making things right always seemed impossibly hard, simply because Noah was constantly standing in the picture, blocking every path to her heart.

I was still deeply lost in my dark, churning thoughts when his low, hostile voice suddenly echoed down the hall, shattering the quiet.

"You and your brothers should refrain from doing stupid things that can hurt Maria!" Noah warned sternly, his jaw clenching as he stared straight at me with undisguised hostility.

"We won’t deliberately do anything to hurt her, Noah..." I paused, drawing in a sharp breath as I took a slow, deliberate step closer to him, closing the distance between us. "Remember, she is our mate!" I swallowed hard, the admission tasting bitter yet fiercely true after giving the small speech. "So the only thing we badly want to do is pamper and protect her... not hurt her in any way!" I added firmly, my voice ringing with absolute conviction.

"She doesn’t need any of your pathetic protection!" Noah snapped back instantly, his tone venomous as his eyes darkened to a lethal shade of amber. "My protection is more than enough for her!" he added, puffing out his chest in a desperate display of dominance.

I let out a dry, sardonic chuckle slightly, shaking my head at his sheer arrogance. "You can’t even properly protect yourself, Noah!" I paused, narrowing my eyes as I let the insult land. "Just admit it!" I added with a short, cold burst of laughter. "So now, tell me how on earth you expect to protect her when you still need our help and our protection just to survive in this pack?" I asked, throwing his own weakness right back in his face.

"You—" Noah yelled immediately, his voice exploding with raw fury as he lunged forward, grabbed my collar with both hands, and violently tightened his grip against my throat.

I immediately grabbed his hands, digging my fingers into his wrists as I fought to break his hold and free myself from his iron grip. However, beneath the surface of my struggle, I was thoroughly loving the explosive reaction I was getting out of him.

I needed him to see the cold, unyielding reality. I needed him to know down to his core just how utterly incapable he truly was, so he could finally wake up, quit this foolish idea of ever being with Maria, and just quietly enjoy the little protection he was currently receiving under our roof.

The Moon Goddess cannot be wrong in her sacred design, and therefore Maria had to be with us by all means necessary.

Making Noah end his pathetic fantasy sooner rather than later would actually do him a great favor in the long run, saving him from total heartbreak.

"Tell me, Noah!" I said smoothly, letting out a sharp breath after successfully prying his tight grip off my shirt and shoving his arms back. "Can you seriously not handle the plain, simple truth?" I asked, adjusting my rumpled collar with a smug smirk.

Noah’s eyes darkened to a pitch-black abyss. "What stupid truth?" he questioned, letting out a dark, cynical laugh that held no genuine humor. "You are being utterly delusional, Damien, if you keep thinking I am still that same weak, helpless boy you saved five years ago!" He paused, stepping right into my space, his heavy presence suddenly pressing against mine with unexpected force. "Don’t you dare underestimate me... unless you want your precious Alpha pride to be permanently wounded." he added firmly, his voice dropping to an icy, dangerous whisper.

My face paled immediately at his sudden shift in aura, and my heart skipped a frantic beat against my ribs. The sharp confidence in his eyes caught me completely off guard.

"Now listen to me very carefully!" Noah said with a terrifying, calm intensity, pointing a rigid finger straight at my chest. "Maria is mine to protect, so stay the hell out of her life!" he added, leaving no room for negotiation.

And without giving me even a single moment to respond, he turned his back on me and began walking away down the dimly lit corridor.

His footsteps echoed faintly against the cold, silent walls as his figure gradually moved farther from me, as though the conversation had already ended in his mind.

But I was far from ready to accept such a humiliating defeat at his hands. There was no way I was going to stand there and simply watch him walk away after dismissing me so completely.

Gathering every ounce of authority I possessed, I drew in a steady breath before raising my voice, allowing it to thunder through the otherwise silent hallway.

My sharp words sliced through the heavy air with enough force to make Noah freeze instantly in his tracks, his footsteps coming to an abrupt halt.

"There is one thing I am absolute, one-hundred-percent confident about..." I paused, drawing myself up to my full height as a cruel grin returned to my face. "The sacred mate bond doesn’t lie, and it certainly cannot be broken easily by a mere human desire." I paused again, letting the weight of reality settle between us. "So just quit!" I added firmly, my voice ringing with absolute certainty. "Because at the end of the day, Noah, you have already lost!"
