Anabel.
My hands were shaking uncontrollably, every single nerve in my body stretched to its absolute breaking point. A relentless, agonizing panic consumed my thoughts, whispering horrifying scenarios of what would happen if anyone ever found out about what had transpired between Vincent and me.
If the truth came to light, if even a single whisper escaped into the pack, I would be utterly ruined and destroyed beyond repair.
My pulse hammered wildly against my ribs, and suddenly, a strange, overwhelming heaviness settled right behind my eyes.
The entire room seemed to tilt violently on its axis, a wave of profound dizziness washing over me so fast that I had to reach out to grab the edge of the nearest wooden table just to keep my balance.
Then, without warning, my stomach churned violently.
A sudden, sharp wave of nausea hit my throat. I gasped, clapping both hands tightly over my mouth as my stomach heaved again.
Driven by pure instinct, I stumbled frantically toward the adjoining bathroom, throwing the door open and collapsing onto my knees right in front of the basin. I barely made it in time before I threw up, my body shuddering with heavy, painful retches.
When the violent sputters finally subsided, I sat there on the cold floor, panting heavily as cold sweat beaded across my forehead. Horror, colder and far more terrifying than my fear of discovery, seized my chest.
"No..." I whispered to myself, my voice trembling in the empty bathroom. "No, no, no... it can’t be." I paused. " It is impossible!"
I shook my head repeatedly, trying to force the terrifying thought out of my mind. It was far too fast! It had barely been any time at all since that night with Vincent.
How could this be happening already?
My body was playing tricks on me. It had to be the sheer stress, the overwhelming panic, the lack of proper sleep—anything but that.
"It’s just stress," I muttered under my breath, using the porcelain basin to pull myself up to a standing position. "Just anxiety. Nothing more."
I turned on the faucet, splashing cold water over my pale face before thoroughly rinsing and washing my mouth out. I stared at my reflection in the mirror, watching my bloodshot eyes. I made a conscious effort to ignore the horrific suspicion creeping up my spine, taking a deep, shuddering breath to steady my nerves.
I took two steps away from the basin, preparing to walk back into the bedroom, when my stomach acted up again with vicious intensity.
Another wave of violent nausea slammed into me, far worse than the first. I gasped, spinning right back around to grab the edge of the basin as I threw up once more, my body doubling over in agony as I emptied whatever was left in my stomach.
The cold realization hit me like a physical blow. The utter, undeniable horror of it all made my heart stop.
Panic, raw and wild, completely took over my senses. I couldn’t stay here for another second. I couldn’t risk anyone noticing my illness, questioning my symptoms, or putting the pieces together. I had to leave immediately before my world completely shattered around me.
I hurriedly washed my mouth out again, wiped my face with a towel, and burst out of the bathroom. I didn’t stop to gather any thoughts in that room; I immediately left it behind and sprinted down the silent corridors, heading straight toward my own private quarters.
The moment I reached my room, I slammed the heavy wooden door shut and locked it behind me.
"Valerie!" I shouted, my voice laced with sheer hysteria as I paced back and forth across the floor. "Valerie, get in here right now!"
Within seconds, the door connecting to the maid’s quarters swung open, and my most trusted personal maid rushed into the room, her eyes wide with deep concern.
"My lady!" Valerie exclaimed, hurrying to my side as she saw my pale, disheveled state. "What is wrong? You look terribly ill! What happened?"
"Don’t ask questions, Valerie!" I commanded, grabbing her by the shoulders, my grip desperate and tight. "We don’t have time! We need to pack my bags right now!"
Valerie blinked in total shock, looking at me as if I had completely lost my mind. "Pack your bags? My lady, where are we going? Why the sudden rush?"
"I said don’t ask questions!" I cried out, my voice cracking under the immense strain. "Just grab the trunks! Gather my essential clothes, my jewelry, everything of value, and start packing! I am escaping this place today! Right this second!"
"Escaping? But my lady—" Valerie started, her voice full of confusion and worry.
"Valerie, please!" I begged, tears overflowing and spilling down my hot cheeks. "If you care about me at all, just do as I say! If I stay here a moment longer, I am finished! We have to leave before anyone notices!"
Recognizing the absolute terror in my eyes, Valerie stopped questioning me. She swallowed hard, nodding her head rapidly. "Okay, okay! I’m packing, my lady! Calm down, please, I’ll gather everything!"
Valerie immediately pulled out two large traveling trunks from the wardrobe and threw them open onto the bed. She began grabbing dresses, heavy cloaks, and my jewelry boxes, tossing them inside with frantic speed. I moved around the room in a blur, my hands trembling as I helped her shove my belongings into the bags, my breathing becoming increasingly shallow and rapid.
Every second felt like a ticking bomb. My heart was pounding so loudly in my ears that it drowned out the quiet rustle of fabrics.
"Is that everything?" I gasped out, my vision blurring at the edges as I tried to fasten the heavy leather straps around the trunk. "Valerie, tell me we are done!"
"Yes, my lady! We have the most important things packed!" Valerie said, hurriedly hoisting one of the smaller bags onto her arm while reaching for my traveling cloak. "We are ready!"
"Good. Good," I stammered, pulling the dark cloak over my shoulders with shaking hands. "We are going through the side exit. No one can see us." I swallowed hard. "And no one can stop us."
I took a heavy step forward, reaching out toward the brass door handle to step out and run into the safety of the dark corridors.
"Let’s go, Valerie, quickly—"
I didn’t even manage to finish my sentence.
Without any warning, a sudden, pitch-black darkness rushed in from the corners of my eyes. A deafening ringing filled my ears, and the floor beneath my feet completely vanished.
"My lady!" Valerie’s frantic scream echoed as if from a vast distance.
My knees gave out beneath me, my hands slipping uselessly off the door handle.
Before I could take another breath or make a single sound, my strength completely evaporated, and my body collapsed heavily onto the hard floor, darkness claiming me entirely.
