Adrein.

The moment I stepped inside my private quarters and let the heavy wooden door swing shut behind me, the suffocating silence of the room crashed over my head.

I leaned back against the solid timber, closing my eyes as I let out a ragged, exhausted breath. My mind was still reeling from the madness in the corridor—Damien’s reckless excitement, Aidan’s relentless determination to bring Patricia here, and the dark, impending shadow of my own failing health.

Before I could even take a single step further into the room or gather my scattered thoughts, the door was thrown open with violent force, slamming against the adjacent stone wall.

I flinched, my eyes snapping open as I raised a hand, ready to bark at whoever dared to barge into my space without knocking. But the harsh reprimand died right in my throat when my eyes fell upon the breathless, trembling figure standing on the threshold.

It was Valerie, Anabel’s trusted personal maid.

Her hair was a disheveled mess, her apron slightly askew, and her face was drained of every drop of color, stark white with absolute, unadulterated panic. Her chest heaved rapidly as she gripped the doorframe just to keep herself upright.

"Alpha Adrein!" she shrieked, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, hysterical tremble that instantly sent a cold spike of dread shooting straight down my spine.

"Valerie?" I snapped, stepping toward her with a scowl, trying to hide the sudden knot tightening in my stomach. "What on earth is the meaning of this? What is wrong with you?"

"It’s Lady Anabel!" Valerie cried out, tears welling up in her wide, terrified eyes as she reached out, clutching desperately at the sleeve of my tunic. "Please, you have to come quickly! She...she fainted!"

My heart slammed violently against my ribs, the blood roaring loud in my ears. "What did you just say?"

"She fainted, my Lord!" Valerie sobbed, her words tumbling over one another in a frantic, disjointed mess. "We were... we were in her room, and she was so pale, so frantic, and then she just collapsed! She’s completely unconscious on the floor and she won’t wake up! Please, hurry!"

I didn’t need to hear another word. Every trace of my own lingering exhaustion vanished in a single instant, replaced by pure, blinding urgency.

Pushing past Valerie, I bolted out of my quarters and sprinted down the hallway, my boots pounding heavily against the cold floor.

"Lead the way!" I shouted back over my shoulder as Valerie scrambled to keep pace behind me.

I tore down the grand corridor, my mind racing through a hundred terrifying possibilities.

Anabel wasn’t one to simply collapse without reason.

What had happened to her?

Was she sick?

Was she targeted?

As I rounded the sharp corner leading toward the main wing, I nearly collided head-on with three tall figures moving in the opposite direction.

Damien, Aidan, and Davian all came to a sudden halt, their expressions shifting from calm contemplation to sharp alertness the moment they saw me rushing toward them like a madman, with a sobbing maid hot on my heels.

"Adrein?" Damien asked, frowning deeply as he held up a hand to steady me. "What is going on? Where are you running to in such a hurry?"

"Is there trouble?" Aidan demanded instantly, his Alpha instincts flaring as his eyes narrowed, his gaze darting past me toward Valerie.

"It’s Anabel!" I gasped out, barely stopping long enough to look them in the eyes as I kept moving forward. "Valerie just came to get me! Anabel collapsed in her room!"

The collective atmosphere among us shifted in a fraction of a second. The tension from our earlier argument in the corridor evaporated, replaced instantly by the fiercely protective bloodline bond that united us whenever one of our own was in danger.

"What? She fainted?" Davian’s loud, booming voice echoed down the hall, his face contorting into deep concern. "How? Why?"

"I don’t know!" I yelled back, my panic bleeding into my tone as I pushed past Damien. "I haven’t seen her yet! I was just heading there right now!"

"We’re coming with you," Aidan commanded firmly, his voice leaving absolutely no room for debate, as he turned sharply to Damien and Davian, his posture rigid and commanding. "Davian, go straight to the infirmary! Get the head healer right now! Tell him to leave whatever he is doing and report directly to Anabel’s room this very second!"

"I’m on it!" Davian barked, turning on his heel without a moment’s delay and sprinting off down the opposite corridor toward the pack’s medical wing.

"Damien, with us!" Aidan ordered, grabbing Damien by the shoulder as we all fell into a full-speed run behind Valerie, our heavy, synchronized footsteps echoing wildly through the estate.

"Did she say what happened before she passed out?" Damien asked loudly, his brow furrowed in frustration as he ran beside me, glancing back at the terrified maid. "Was she injured? Was anyone with her?"

"She didn’t say anything!" I snapped back, my chest burning with every breath I drew. "She just said Anabel collapsed!"

"She was just so stressed, my Lords!" Valerie managed to yell out between heavy, panicked breaths as she led us down the final stretch of the hallway. "She was talking so fast, and then her strength just gave out entirely!"

We reached the wing of Anabel’s private quarters in record time. Valerie threw open the grand wooden doors, and the four of us burst into the room.

The sight that greeted us made my breath catch painfully in my throat.

The room was in absolute disarray. Two heavy traveling trunks lay wide open on the bed, clothes and various belongings hastily shoved inside as if someone had been trying to pack in a frantic hurry.

And there, lying completely motionlessly beside the bed on the hard floor, was Anabel. Her dark cloak was draped awkwardly around her shoulders, her face deathly pale, and her eyes closed tightly as if she were merely asleep, yet utterly unresponsive.

"Anabel!" I cried out, dropping to my knees beside her in an instant.

I reached out with trembling hands, gently lifting her upper body and cradling her head against my arm.

Her skin was unnaturally cold and damp with a fine layer of sweat.

"Anabel, can you hear me? Wake up! Open your eyes!"

Damien knelt right on her other side, his face etched with severe anxiety as he reached out to feel for the pulse at her neck. "She’s breathing, but her pulse is fluttering wildly...she’s completely out."

Aidan stood over us, his jaw clenched so tightly that the muscles worked beneath his skin. His eyes swept over the half-packed bags on the bed, a dark flick of suspicion crossing his features before he forced his attention back to our unconscious sister.

"Where the hell is the healer?!" Aidan growled, his voice booming through the room as he marched toward the open doorway, pacing back and forth like a caged predator. "Davian should have brought him by now!"

"He’s coming, Aidan, calm down!" Damien said, though his own voice lacked conviction as he kept patting Anabel’s pale cheek, trying desperately to rouse her. "Anabel...come on, sister, wake up for us."

Right on cue, the sound of rushed, heavy footsteps echoed from the hallway outside. A moment later, Davian burst into the room, practically dragging the elderly head healer by his arm, the old man clutching his leather medical bag tightly to his chest as he panted for air.

"I brought him!" Davian announced, stepping aside to let the breathless healer pass.

"Finally!" Aidan barked, pointing a stern, commanding finger at the unconscious girl on the floor. "Stop standing there breathless and examine her right now! She collapsed out of nowhere!"

"Yes, yes, of course, my Lords! Please, give me space!" the old healer stammered, scrambling forward and immediately dropping to his knees beside Damien and me.

The healer quickly opened his satchel, pulling out small vials and a soft cloth while his trembling fingers pressed firmly against Anabel’s wrist, checking her vital signs.

The entire room went dead silent, the heavy, suffocating atmosphere thick with tension as we all watched his every move, waiting in agony for his report.
