Adrein

The suffocating silence in the room stretched until my nerves felt ready to snap. I stared down at the healer, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped beast.

"Well?" I barked, taking a sharp step forward and leaning over the old man. "Speak up! What is wrong with our sister?"

The old healer flinched, his fingers trembling as he slowly pulled his hands away from Anabel’s wrist.

He swallowed hard, his throat making a dry, clicking sound as his terrified eyes darted frantically between Aidan, Davian, Adrein, and me.

"My...Alphas’...my...my Lords," the old man stammered, his voice barely above a harsh whisper. "I have checked her vitals twice to be absolutely certain." He paused. "The dizziness and the sudden fainting, the elevated pulse..."

"Spit it out already!" Davian roared from the doorway, slamming his fist against the wooden frame. "Stop beating around the bush!"

The healer cowered slightly, closing his eyes tightly before blurting out the words. "L–lady Anabel is pregnant!"

The world seemed to stop spinning in a single, brutal second.

The heavy air in the room vanished, completely dousing the room in an icy, suffocating shock. I froze in my tracks, my jaw dropping as my mind refused to process the words that had just tumbled out of the old man’s mouth.

Pregnant?

"What did you just say?" Aidan’s voice came out dangerously low, a lethal rumble echoing deep within his chest as he stepped right into the healer’s space and his face turned thunderous, his eyes flashing a vivid, predatory gold. "Say that again... I dare you."

The poor healer pressed himself flat against the floor, shaking like a leaf. "It is the absolute truth, Lord Aidan!" He oaused. "I swear on my life! She is with child! It is still very early, but her body is already reacting to the sudden shift in her internal energy!"

"You’re lying!" Adrein yelled, his voice cracking with pure disbelief as he looked down at Anabel’s pale, unconscious face. "That’s impossible! Anabel isn’t even mated! She hasn’t been seeing anyone!"

I stood there, completely paralyzed, as a wave of absolute, burning fury slowly ignited deep in my gut. My hands clenched into tight fists at my sides, my knuckles turning stark white as my wolf roared in outrage.

Anabel?

Our sweet, protected little sister.

Pregnant?

My mind raced wildly, trying to make sense of the nightmare unfolding right before our eyes.

Who could have done this?

Who had the sheer audacity to touch our sister in secret?

Some stray rogue?

A low-ranking pack warrior who snuck into her quarters at night?

Some bastard from a neighboring pack during the last council gathering?

The thought of an unknown scoundrel laying a single finger on her, taking advantage of her, made my blood boil to a dangerous temperature.

"She was packing her bags," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow to the head.

I spun around and glared at the two open traveling trunks on the bed, the pieces of the puzzle suddenly slamming together with violent clarity.

"She wasn’t just throwing a fit," I snarled, turning back to face my brothers, my voice dripping with pure venom. "She found out she was pregnant, panicked, and was trying to run away before any of us noticed!"

"Who did this to her?" Davian bellowed, his loud voice vibrating through the entire wing.

He stomped over to Valerie, who was still flat on her face, sobbing hysterically into the rug. He reached down, grabbed the back of her collar, and yanked her up to her knees.

"Speak, maid!" He yelled. "Who has she been meeting in secret?! Who is the father?!"

"I don’t know! I swear on the Moon Goddess, I don’t know!" Valerie shrieked, her hands clasped in desperate prayer as tears streamed down her blotchy face. "Lady Anabel never brought anyone to her room! She never told me about a man! Please, Lord Davian, don’t kill me!"

Davian threw her back onto the floor in utter disgust. "Lies! She’s covering for her!"

"Enough, Davian!" Aidan commanded, though his own face was contorted in a mask of murderous rage. He looked at the healer with cold, unforgiving eyes. "Is she okay? Is the child safe?"

"Yes, my Lord," the healer stammered, scrambling back onto his knees. "She merely fainted from extreme stress, exhaustion, and the shock on her body. She needs rest and proper nourishment." He paused. "Once she wakes up, she will be physically fine."

"Good," Aidan growled, crossing his heavy arms over his chest as his lethal gaze shifted toward the door. "Because when she wakes up, she is going to tell us every single detail."

I paced back and forth across the room like a caged predator, my chest heaving with every ragged breath I drew. The sheer disrespect of it all was driving me insane.

Someone had crossed our borders, seduced our sister, gotten her pregnant, and left her to deal with the terror all on her own—so much so that she felt her only option was to pack her life into two trunks and run into the wilderness!

"When I find the bastard who did this," I promised, my voice dropping into an icy, horrific promise that sent a shiver down the healer’s spine, "I am going to rip his heart out with my bare hands. I will drag him through the pack grounds and feed his remains to the rogue wolves."

"Not before I break every single bone in his body," Adrein added bitterly, his eyes fixed on Anabel, his expression a terrifying mix of heart-wrenching sorrow and cold, unyielding rage.

"We lock down the estate immediately," Aidan ordered, his Alpha authority cutting through the chaos. "No one leaves this pack house and no one enters." He paused. "I want every guard posted at the perimeter. If the man responsible is still within our territory, he will not escape."

Davian nodded aggressively. "I’ll personally order the guards to search the surrounding woods and the lower village. If she was meeting someone in secret, someone must have seen them!"

"Do it," I snapped, my eyes burning with an uncontrollable fire.

We all stood around Anabel’s bed, four powerful Alpha brothers united by a single, terrifying purpose.

We were completely oblivious to the real culprit hiding in plain sight, but one thing was absolute: whoever had touched our sister had just signed their own death warrant.
