Anabel

The cold darkness slowly receded from my eyes, replaced by a dull, throbbing ache in my temples. My eyelids felt heavy, like lead, as I feebly tried to open them. The room was blurry at first, but as my vision gradually cleared, my breath caught painfully in my throat.

I wasn’t outside, neither was I running nor was I lying in my own bed.

And standing directly over me, looming like four massive wall-like shadows, were my brothers.

Their faces were twisted into scary masks of pure, unadulterated fury. The air in the room felt so heavy with their suffocating Alpha presence that I could barely draw a breath into my lungs.

My heart began to hammer wildly against my ribs as the horrifying realization hit me. I hadn’t made it out. I had fainted.

"She’s awake," Davian growled, his deep, booming voice shattering the tense silence like thunder.

Aidan took a heavy step closer, leaning over the edge of the mattress. His eyes were glowing a bright, lethal gold, his jaw clenched so hard I thought his teeth might break.

"Anabel," Aidan started, his voice dropping into a dangerously quiet, deadly tone. "Do you have any idea what the healer just told us?"

I swallowed hard, a cold sweat breaking out across my forehead. I pulled the heavy blankets tightly up to my chin, my hands shaking uncontrollably under the fabric. "A-Aidan... I..."

"You’re pregnant, Anabel!" Damien blurted out, stepping up right beside Aidan, his hands balling into tight fists at his sides. His face was flushed with pure rage. "You are carrying a child!"

The words hung in the air like a heavy anvil, crushing whatever tiny sliver of hope I had left.

It can’t be! My greatest fear couldn’t have just been confirmed.

"Who did this to you?" Davian bellowed, slamming his fist down onto the wooden nightstand beside my bed, causing the glass lamp on top to shatter into pieces. "Give us a name, Anabel! Who is the bastard that touched you?!"

Tears immediately flooded my eyes, blurring my sight as I shook my head frantically against the pillow. "I... I can’t..."

"What do you mean you can’t?!" Adrein yelled, coming around to the other side of the bed, as his usual gentle expression was completely gone, replaced by a terrifying mix of heart-wrenching pain and murderous fury. "Look at us, Anabel! You were packing your bags! You were trying to run away from your own family, from your own home! Who made you so terrified that you thought you had to escape in the middle of the night?!"

"Was it a rogue?!" Damien demanded, leaning down until he was just inches from my face, his chest heaving with every ragged breath. "Did some stray bastard ambush you outside the territory?! Did someone force himself on you?! Tell me, Anabel! I swear to God, I will rip his head off his shoulders!"

"No! No, nobody forced me!" I shrieked, the panic taking over as I squeezed my eyes shut, fresh tears streaming down my hot cheeks. "Please, just stop yelling at me!"

"Then WHO WAS IT?!" Aidan’s commanding Alpha roar reverberated through the room, making the stone walls vibrate. "If nobody forced you, then who have you been sneaking around with behind our backs?! Give us the name right now!"

I bit my lower lip so hard I tasted blood. Panic, cold and paralyzing, seized my entire body.

Vincent.

His name was screaming in my head, but I couldn’t let it cross my lips. I couldn’t say it! If I uttered even a single syllable of his name, my brothers wouldn’t just kill him—they would tear him apart piece by piece, drag his bloody remains through the pack house, and start a terrifying, bloody feud that would ruin everything! They would consider it the ultimate betrayal!

"I... I can’t tell you," I sobbed out, pulling the blanket higher over my trembling shoulders. "Please, just leave it alone! Please!"

"Leave it alone?!" Davian roared, throwing his arms up in total disbelief. "Are you out of your mind, Anabel?! You are our sister! An Alpha’s daughter! Some lowlife got you pregnant and left you to panic by yourself, and you want us to just leave it alone?!"

"He didn’t leave me!" I accidentally yelled back, my voice cracking under the immense pressure before I could catch myself.

The room went dead, terrifyingly silent.

Damien’s eyes narrowed into slit-like points of dark fury. "So you do know him. You’ve been seeing him voluntarily."

I instantly clamped my mouth shut, horrified at my slip-up, but the damage was already done.

"Who is he, Anabel?" Adrein asked softly, though his tone was colder than ice. "Is he someone from the pack?" He asked, as he blinked twice. " A warrior? A guard?"

"I won’t tell you!" I cried, shaking my head repeatedly. "If I tell you, you’re going to kill him!"

"You’re damn right we are going to kill him!" Damien shouted, stepping over the shattered lamp glass on the floor. "He touched an Alpha female in secret! He got you pregnant and put you in a position where you were fainting from sheer terror! He is a dead man walking!"

"Damien, quiet!" Aidan commanded sternly, though his own eyes were burning with an uncontrollable, lethal promise and he looked down at me, his face completely rigid. "Listen to me very carefully, Anabel. The pack house is on complete lockdown. Nobody goes in, and nobody goes out. We are searching every inch of this territory... So to spare us the hassle, spill his name out!"

"Aidan, please, don’t do this!" I begged, sitting up in bed and reaching out to grab his sleeve with trembling fingers. "Please, I’m begging you! Don’t drag anyone else into this! It was my mistake! Mine!"

"It stopped being just your mistake the moment you decided to carry an unsanctioned child under our roof," Aidan said, coldly prying my shaking hands off his arm. "You are going to rest now. But make no mistake, sister... we will find out who he is and when we do, no force on this earth will save him from us."

"Aidan, no!" I screamed, tears overflowing as I tried to swing my legs over the edge of the mattress. "Don’t do it! Please!"

Davian immediately stepped forward, grabbing my shoulders gently yet firmly, pushing me back onto the pillows. "Stay in bed, Anabel. Don’t make this harder on yourself."

"Let go of me! Please, let me go!" I sobbed uncontrollably, my strength completely failing as I collapsed back against the mattress, clutching my stomach with both hands.

My four brothers turned as one, their towering figures marching toward the bedroom door. Their heavy, synchronized footsteps sounded like a slow funeral march, promising nothing but blood and destruction for the man I was desperately trying to protect.

They slammed the heavy wooden door shut behind them, the sharp sound of the lock clicking firmly into place echoing through the room. I was left all alone in the quiet, clutching my belly as my helpless sobs filled the dark room, knowing that a terrible, bloody storm was about to tear our entire home apart.
