Maria.
My head was throbbing with a relentless, persistent ache as I walked beside Noah down the quiet stone corridor toward the room.
After everything that had just transpired—the violent altercation with Damien, the endless shouting, and the overwhelming, life-altering revelation of Patricia’s sudden existence as my twin sister—my mind felt completely fried.
I forced my lips into a small, tight smile, doing my absolute best to convince Noah that I was holding together, even though every muscle in my body trembled with sheer emotional exhaustion.
"Are you sure you’re alright now?" Noah asked softly, casting a worried glance down at me, his fingers lightly brushing against mine.
"I’m fine, Noah," I whispered, keeping that fake smile plastered on my face. "I just... I really just need to get to the room and rest."
We were just turning the sharp corner near the central stairs when the loud, rhythmic thud of heavy boots echoed violently down the hallway.
I looked up, my smile instantly vanishing, as all four quadruplets came charging toward us in a dense, menacing pack.
Damien, Aidan, Davian, and Adrein were practically radiating waves of suffocating, predatory anger. Their faces were carved into terrifying masks of dark, lethal fury, their eyes glowing faintly with raw Alpha energy as they stormed past us, clearly heading toward the lower courtyard on an urgent mission.
Before I could pull back or retreat into the shadows, Noah stepped right into the very middle of the hallway, directly blocking their path.
A small, amused smirk played on Noah’s lips as he crossed his arms over his broad chest, staring the four looming brothers down without an ounce of fear.
"Well, well. Look at you four running around like frantic, lost dogs," Noah taunted smoothly, his tone laced with lighthearted teasing despite the tense air. "Where exactly are you all heading in such a furious hurry?"
Damien stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes flashing with raw, unadulterated hatred as he glared at Noah.
"Mind your own damn business, Noah!" Damien spat out sharply, taking a menacing step forward, his voice dripping with pure venom. "Get out of our way right now before I personally make you move!"
"Oh, believe me, I am minding my business," Noah replied calmly, not flinching for a single second. He casually adjusted his posture, taking a half-step back and placing a warm, firm, possessive hand right on my waist, pulling me slightly closer to his side. "In fact, Maria and I are making our own plans as we speak."
Aidan’s eyes narrowed into slit-like points. "What plans?" he demanded in a low, dangerous growl.
"We’re packing up and leaving this pack house first thing tomorrow morning," Noah announced clearly, his voice echoing through the silent corridor. "I’m taking her straight back to my own pack territory, where she actually belongs and where she will finally get some peace."
The reaction was instantaneous and utterly explosive.
A violent, suffocating wave of rage rolled off all four brothers simultaneously. Davian’s fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned stark white, while Damien let out a harsh, animalistic growl, his chest heaving with deep, ragged breaths.
"Are you completely out of your mind?!" Aidan shouted, his commanding Alpha voice echoing violently against the stone walls as he stepped right into Noah’s face, his tall frame looming over us.
Adrein ran both hands through his dark hair, letting out an exasperated, furious laugh as he shook his head in total disbelief and frustration.
"I seriously cannot believe this!" Adrein said bitterly, his eyes darting back and forth between Noah and me with deep agitation. "We are literally jumping from one catastrophic problem straight into another!" He paused. "Why can’t you ever just hear word for once in your life and listen to what we are telling you, Noah?!"
"Taking Maria out of this territory right now is insanely, ridiculously dangerous!" Aidan roared, pointing a rigid, trembling finger straight at Noah’s chest. "You have no idea what is happening on these grounds right now! You need to keep her right here where she is actually protected!"
"Protected?" Noah countered with a cold, mocking laugh, tightening his grip on my waist as he glared right back into Aidan’s eyes. "Protected by who? You four? You can’t even keep order in your own hallway!"
"Listen to me!" Adrein snapped, stepping closer, his face contorted in sheer, desperate frustration. "The entire pack house is on strict lockdown right now! We are currently hunting down a bastard who dared to touch—"
Adrein cut himself off mid-sentence, abruptly snapping his mouth shut.
He froze completely, his eyes widening slightly as he caught himself right on the verge of revealing somesecret. He took a sharp, uneasy breath, his jaw locking tight as he exchanged a quick, panicked glance with Damien and Aidan, who were both glaring at him with sudden, sharp warnings written all over their faces.
The heavy silence returned to the corridor, thick and suffocating.
Noah’s amused smirk instantly vanished. His sharp eyes narrowed into dangerous slits, his gaze locking onto Adrein as he caught the sudden, heavy pause and the nervous energy shifting between the brothers.
"Dared to touch who?" Noah pressed immediately, his voice dropping into a low, demanding tone. "Finish your sentence, Adrein. Who are you four hunting down?"
Adrein swallowed hard, his eyes darting away for a brief second as he tried to regain his composure. "It’s none of your concern, Noah," Adrein stammered out, trying to sound firm, though the nervous edge in his voice betrayed him completely. "It’s internal pack business. All you need to know is that no one leaves this territory while the lockdown is in effect."
"Don’t lie to my face," Noah countered sharply, taking a step closer to the quadruplets, refusing to back down an inch. "You don’t lock down an entire pack house and march through the halls like a pack of rabid wolves over minor pack business. Who was touched? And why are you four looking like you’re ready to murder someone?"
I looked between Noah and the brothers, my heart quickening as the thick, suffocating tension in the hallway grew even heavier. Whatever Adrein had almost let slip, it was clearly massive—and the look of absolute, terrifying panic flashing across Adrein’s face said everything.
"I said mind your own business!" Aidan roared, stepping in front of Adrein to shield him, his Alpha aura flaring dangerously. "You are a guest here, Noah! You don’t get to demand answers from us about our family or our pack!"
"I demand answers when you use your little crisis as an excuse to trap Maria here!" Noah snapped back, his eyes flashing with brilliant gold light as he stood his ground against Aidan. "If someone stepped out of line, deal with it! But don’t pretend for a single second that it gives you the right to control where Maria goes!"
While Aidan and Noah glared at each other, standing toe-to-toe in a silent battle of dominance, Damien remained strangely quiet.
I watched as Damien slowly shifted his gaze away from Noah, his sharp, dark eyes fixing entirely on Adrein. His brow furrowed in deep, sudden thought, a dark wave of realization washing over his features, more like he was replaying Adrein’s slip-up in his head, connecting the dots with horrifying speed.
Adrein flinched under Damien’s sudden, intense scrutiny, taking a small, uneasy step back. "Damien... what?" Adrein whispered, his voice trembling slightly.
Damien didn’t answer him immediately. Instead, he slowly turned his head, his dark, calculating gaze landing squarely back on Noah. The anger on Damien’s face morphed into something far more sinister—a cold, terrifying suspicion that made the blood run cold in my veins.
"Hold on," Damien said slowly, his voice dripping with lethal quietness that instantly cut through Aidan and Noah’s shouting match.
Everyone in the hallway froze. Aidan stopped mid-sentence, looking back at his brother in confusion, while Noah frowned, his eyes locking onto Damien’s brooding expression.
Damien took two slow, deliberate steps toward Noah, his jaw clenched so tight the muscles in his cheeks twitched wildly. His eyes scanned Noah from head to toe, searching for any sign of guilt.
"Adrein is right," Damien muttered, his tone dangerously calm, yet laced with a poison that made my stomach drop. "Anabel has always been distant with everyone in this pack. She barely lets any warrior or guard get close to her quarters."
My eyes widened in utter shock.
Anabel?
Were they talking about their sister?
Damien stopped right in front of Noah, his eyes burning with an unholy, possessive fury as he leaned in close.
"Noah..." Damien started softly, though the words sounded like a death sentence. "You’re the only one Anabel actually likes around here. You’re the only man she’s ever smiled at or willingly talked to without a guard present."
Noah’s expression hardened, his brow furrowing in genuine confusion. "What the hell are you talking about, Damien?"
Damien’s face contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage, his voice booming through the corridor with absolute venom.
"Tell me, Noah," Damien spat out, his hands balling into tight, white-knuckled fists at his sides. "Have you touched her?"
