Damien.
The moment Maria’s body hit the stone floor with that sickening thud, the violent rage burning in my veins instantly turned into pure, paralyzing horror.
"Maria!" I screamed, my voice cracking as I completely abandoned Noah, lunging across the floor and dropping to my knees right beside her motionless body.
I reached out with trembling hands, gently lifting her upper body up into my arms and cradling her against my chest. Her face was deathly pale, her skin cool and clammy to the touch, and her dark lashes rested heavily against her cheekbones. She was completely out cold, utterly unresponsive to my touch.
"Maria, open your eyes!" I panicked, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs like a trapped beast. I tapped her cheek gently, my chest heaving with deep, frantic breaths. "Come on, sweetheart, wake up for me! Please!"
"Move out of the way!" Aidan barked, shoving Davian aside as he knelt down right beside us, his eyes wide with a terrifying mix of fear and possessive panic. He reached for her wrist, pressing his fingers firmly against her pulse. "Is she breathing? Is she hurt?!"
"I don’t know!" I yelled back, my hands shaking as I smoothed back the loose strands of hair clinging to her damp forehead. "She just collapsed!" I paused, suddenly feeling guilty.
Adrein dropped to his knees on her other side, his face contorted in sheer, overwhelming guilt as he stared down at her pale, helpless expression. "This is our fault," Adrein whispered, his voice trembling as he looked at her. "She was already completely exhausted after everything that happened earlier, and then we went and started a brutal brawl right in front of her!"
"Get away from her!" a raspy, bloodied voice growled from behind us.
I snapped my head around to see Noah pushing himself up off the floor. His face was a bruised, bloody mess, his eye already swelling shut and blood dripping heavily from his mouth, but he was still trying to crawl toward us with pure hatred burning in his eyes.
"Don’t you dare lay your filthy hands on her!" Noah spat out, coughing up a spatter of blood as he feebly reached out toward Maria. "You bastards did this to her! Let her go!"
Davian stood up straight, his massive frame looming over Noah like a dark shadow. Before Noah could even get his knees under him, Davian drove his boot hard against Noah’s shoulder, shoving him flat back onto the cold stone floor.
"Stay down, you miserable bastard!" Davian snarled, his voice vibrating off the walls as he pointed a rigid, warning finger at Noah’s bleeding face. "If you take one more step toward her, I swear on my wolf, I will end your life right here on this floor!"
"Davian, leave him!" Aidan ordered sternly, though his own eyes were fixed entirely on Maria’s limp form in my arms. "Noah isn’t our priority right now! Maria is!"
Aidan looked up at Adrein, his Alpha authority snapping back into place despite the rising chaos. "Adrein, go get the healer right now! Tell him to bring whatever medicine he has for shock and physical exhaustion!"
"He’s still in Anabel’s room!" Adrein said, scrambling up from the floor without a second thought. "But...I’ll drag him down here myself!" Adrein turned on his heel and sprinted down the corridor as fast as his legs could carry him.
I tightened my grip on Maria, scooping her up into my arms as I stood up from the hard floor. Holding her felt terrifyingly weightless, like holding fragile glass that was on the verge of shattering into a thousand sharp pieces. A heavy wave of self-loathing washed over me. I had promised myself I would protect her, yet I was the one who had brought this terrifying violence right to her feet.
"I’m taking her to my room," I announced, my tone leaving zero room for argument as I looked at Aidan and Davian. "She needs to be lying down properly."
"I’m coming with you," Aidan said instantly, stepping right alongside me, his protective instincts flaring as he kept a watchful eye on her pale face.
"Wait!" Noah yelled, his voice choked with blood and pure desperation as he struggled to push himself up against the stone wall, clutching his broken ribs. "You can’t take her! She’s leaving with me tomorrow! You can’t keep her locked up here!"
I stopped dead in my tracks, turning my head to glare at Noah with a cold, murderous glare that made the blood run cold in the room.
"Listen to me very carefully, Noah," I growled, my voice dropping into a deadly, quiet promise that sent a shiver down the dark hallway. "You are not taking Maria anywhere." I paused. " Not tomorrow, not ever and if you even attempt to come near my room, or try to sneak her out of this pack house, I won’t just beat you within an inch of your life... I will tear your heart straight out of your chest and feed it to the guards."
"Damien, let’s go," Aidan urged, placing a firm hand on my shoulder, pulling my attention back to the unconscious girl in my arms.
I did not give Noah another glance. I refused to let my eyes linger on him for even another second. Instead, I turned sharply on my heel and marched down the hallway toward my private quarters, my steps firm and purposeful despite the heaviness pressing against my chest.
Aidan and Davian followed immediately behind me, their presence steady and imposing, trailing after me like an impenetrable wall of iron.
Neither of them said a word as we moved through the hallway. I kept my attention fixed ahead, unwilling to slow down or look back.
When we finally reached my room, Davian stepped forward and threw the heavy wooden doors open with a forceful movement. Without hesitation, I stepped inside, carrying my attention straight toward the large bed positioned in the center of the room.
I moved quickly to the bedside and carefully lowered Maria onto the soft mattress. Yet despite my urgency, every movement became gentle the moment I touched her. I adjusted her position with painstaking care before pulling the soft velvet duvet slowly up over her shoulders.
Then I remained there for a moment, staring down at her.
She looked so frail and helpless against the white pillows, her small figure appearing almost swallowed by their softness. My heart ached painfully at the sight, and I couldn’t tear my eyes away from her.
Aidan stood at the foot of the bed, his arms crossed tightly over his broad chest as he stared down at her, his jaw set in a rigid line. "She’s completely overwhelmed, Damien."
"Noah is a disease," Davian spat out from the doorway, his bloody knuckles still dripping onto the rug. "He’s filling her head with crazy ideas about leaving, making her stress levels shoot through the roof!"
"He’s not taking her," I muttered quietly, sitting down on the edge of the mattress and gently taking Maria’s cold hand into my own, squeezing it tightly. "I don’t care if I have to put this entire pack under a permanent spell or lock her in this room forever." I paused. " She belongs here and with us." I paused. "I AM NOT GIVING IN THIS TIME WITHOUT A FIGHT."
"What about Noah?" Davian asked, wiping his bloody nose with the back of his forearm. "We can’t just leave him bleeding out in the hallway."
"Have the guards throw him into the guest wing and post four guards outside his door," Aidan commanded coldly, his eyes never leaving Maria. "He is officially under house arrest until we deal with Anabel’s situation and figure out what the hell is going on in this pack."
Right on cue, the bedroom doors burst open, and Adrein hurried inside, practically dragging the elderly head healer by his elbow. The old man was gasping for air, clutching his medical bag tight against his chest.
"I brought him!" Adrein panted out, rushing straight to the side of the bed. "Examine her right now!"
"Please, my Lords, give me a moment to catch my breath!" the healer stammered out, dropping to his knees beside me and quickly pulling out a small vial of smelling salts and a damp cloth.
"Just check her!" I barked, my tone laced with sharp impatience as I leaned over her. "Why hasn’t she opened her eyes yet? What is wrong with her?!"
The old healer flinched, quickly pressing his fingers against Maria’s wrist to check her vitals, while placing the damp cloth over her warm forehead.
The entire room fell into a tense, suffocating silence as we all stood around her bed, four Alpha brothers holding our collective breath, desperately waiting for her dark eyes to open once again. But no matter how long I looked, it seemed like it was taking forever, and my heart slowly began to thud faster.
