Adrein.
I stood at the edge of the bed, my chest heaving with every ragged breath as I stared down at Maria’s pale, lifeless face. My heart felt as though it were being squeezed in a vise. Watching her lie there, completely motionless and drained of all her vibrant energy, was a terrifying torture I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.
I leaned over the side of the mattress, resting my knuckles against the soft blanket beside her.
My hands were shaking. I didn’t care about the pack lockdown, I didn’t care about Noah, and right now, I didn’t even care about the mess with Anabel.
All I cared about was the girl lying in front of us. I would willingly give up my title, my strength, my very life if it meant she would open those dark eyes, smile at me, and be completely okay. She was everything to us, and seeing her like this was tearing my soul to shreds.
"Is she going to be alright?" I choked out, my voice cracking under the weight of my desperation as I glared down at the old healer. "Why isn’t she waking up?! Fix her!" I yelled, as the healer was taking too long.
"Adrein, allow him to concentrate in reading her pulse!" Aidan snapped, though his own voice trembled with the exact same frantic panic consuming the rest of us.
Damien was sitting right on the edge of the bed, clutching Maria’s limp hand against his chest as if he were trying to force his own life force straight into her veins.
Davian stood near the door like a hulking, terrifying wall of muscle, his jaw clenched tight enough to break bone.
Everyone had taken different positions as the healer was taking longer than expected.
The old healer carefully set down his glass vial, pulling his trembling fingers away from Maria’s wrist. He wiped cold sweat from his forehead with a sleeve, letting out a long, heavy sigh that made my stomach instantly drop to the floor.
"Well? Speak up!" Damien demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, protective growl. "What is wrong with her?!"
The healer looked up at the four of us, his eyes filled with deep concern and apprehension. "My Lords... Lady Maria’s body is under immense, terrifying physical strain..." He paused. "...but it is not just physical exhaustion from anything that could have happened earlier."
I took a sharp step closer, leaning right over the bed. "Then what is it? What’s happening to her?"
"It is her bond," the healer revealed quietly, his words cutting through the heavy air like a razor blade. "I could tell from her wolf readings that her mate bond is incomplete." He paused. "The incomplete bond is severely affecting her system. Her soul and her body are tied to a mate, but because that bond remains unfulfilled and unsealed, her body is constantly fighting against itself."
My heart hammered violently against my ribs. "Her bond?" I echoed, my chest tightening.
"Yes, Alpha Adrein," the healer explained, looking down at Maria’s pale face before facing us again. "She was already holding an extreme amount of emotional distress and physical fatigue today." He paused. "The sudden, violent uproar of emotions within her clashed with the wolf energy within her, causing the terror and the emotional shock...which has completely triggered and activated the incomplete bond inside her." He took a deep breath as he stared at each of us. "Her body couldn’t handle the sudden surge of raw energy trying to pull on a connection that isn’t fully sealed, and her system simply shut down to protect itself, causing her to lose consciousness."
"No, no, no," I muttered, running both hands frantically through my hair as I paced back and forth at the foot of the bed. "This can’t be happening!" I took a sharp breath. "I mean she was just fine a few hours ago!"
"She was not fine, Adrien!" Damien barked bitterly, his eyes burning with intense guilt as he stared at Maria. "She’s been stressed out of her mind all day, and we made it a thousand times worse by tearing into Noah right in front of her!"
My heart skipped a bit, as I never thought of the possibility that Maria might not really be happy with us hitting Noah.
"Blaming ourselves isn’t going to wake her up!" Davian yelled from the doorway, his booming voice filled with sheer frustration, as he stomped over to the side of the bed, looking down at the old man. "Tell us what we need to do! What is the cure?! What can be done to fix this right now?!"
Aidan stepped forward, his tone cold, desperate, and commanding. "Give us an answer, healer. How do we stop her body from rejecting itself? How do we fix her bond?"
The old healer swallowed hard, looking at the four towering Alpha brothers standing over him. He cleared his throat nervously, picking his words with extreme caution.
"To stabilize her condition and keep her body from falling into an even deeper, dangerous coma..." the healer began, his voice steadying, "you need to solidify the bond. That is the only way to ease the pressure on her heart and mind."
"Solidify the bond?" I asked, leaning in, a tiny flicker of hope flaring up in my chest. "How do we do that? Tell us what to do, and we’ll do it immediately! Anything!"
"Yes, please!" Damien urged, his grip tightening around Maria’s cold hand. "Whatever it takes, we will do it!"
The old healer took a deep, shuddering breath. He slowly closed his satchel, his weathered face looking heavier and more serious than I had ever seen it before. He looked up, his gaze moving slowly from Damien to Aidan, then to Davian, and finally settling straight on me.
"Alphas, permit me to say these..." The old man paused, the silence in the room suddenly becoming so thick and heavy that you could hear a pin drop.
We all froze, four powerful brothers completely paralyzed, waiting on his next breath.
The healer hesitated for a brief second, his eyes filled with profound gravity, before he finally finished his sentence.
"...but you all need to look for her mate to complete the bond."
