Damien.

The healer’s words hung in the heavy air like a physical weight, completely suffocating the room.

’You all need to look for her mate to complete the bond.’

My heart slammed against my ribs like a trapped beast, the realization hitting me so hard and so fast that my entire body went rigid. I stared down at Maria’s pale, motionless face, my mind racing through every single piece of the puzzle.

Me.

It was me. I was the one the old man was talking about.

Aidan, Davian, and Adrein had already claimed their share of the bond—they had marked her, leaving their scents and spiritual imprints deeply rooted in her soul. I was the only one left. I was the missing piece of her bond, the sole reason her body was fighting itself, twisting her internal energy into a violent, agonizing knot. The incomplete mark was starving her, pulling on a connection that I had left half-finished out of my own foolish hesitation and sluggishness.

I looked down at her neck, right where her soft skin met her shoulder, imaging my mark sitting beside my brothers’. A sudden, overwhelming surge of possessive guilt washed over me, choking the breath straight out of my throat.

"Is he out of his mind?!" Adrein blurted out, throwing his hands up in sheer frustration as he paced back and forth near the foot of the bed. "Look for her mate?!" He paused. "We are right here! How is her body reacting like this when three of us have already marked her?!"

"Shut up for a second, Adrein!" Davian growled, stepping up closer to the mattress, his face contorted in a mix of panic and deep confusion. He glared down at the old healer. "Explain this properly. If three of us have already sealed our marks with her, why is her system collapsing like this? Will completing the final mark actually wake her up, or will it hurt her even more?!"

Aidan leaned over the bed, his gold-flecked eyes burning with cold, desperate intensity. "Answer him, healer. If the final mark is placed while she is in this state... will it affect her further? Could it cause her more harm or shock her body into a worse condition?"

The old healer flinched under the crushing weight of our collective Alpha pressure. He backed away slightly, his hands trembling as he tightly clasped them together over his knees. He swallowed hard, his throat making a dry sound in the quiet room.

"My... Lo... Alphas ... I... I cannot say for certain," the old man stammered out, his voice shaking. "A soul bond involving four Alphas is unprecedented. Her body is extremely weak right now. Placing a mark requires a massive surge of energy from both the Alpha and the mate. It could stabilize her instantly... or the sudden shock to her physical form while she is unconscious could severely strain her heart."

"You’re not sure?!" I snapped, my voice dropping into a harsh, dangerous growl as my eyes locked onto the healer. "You’re a head healer of this pack and you’re telling us you don’t know if marking her right now will save her or kill her?!"

"I am deeply sorry, Lord Damien!" the old man pleaded, bowing his head in terror. "The energy of the bond is delicate! I cannot predict how her unconscious mind will react to the physical bite!"

"Get out," Aidan commanded coldly, his voice leaving no room for debate as he pointed a rigid finger toward the wooden doors. "Get out before I lose my temper."

"Yes, my Lo...Alpha! Right away!" the old man scrambled to his feet, grabbing his satchel in a hurry and practically running out of the bedroom, slamming the doors tightly shut behind him.

Silence fell over the room once again, heavy and suffocating.

Adrein ran both hands violently through his dark hair, letting out a sharp, bitter sigh. "This is insane. We can’t just take a risk like that if the healer isn’t even sure! What if her body rejects the bite because she’s unconscious? What if it makes her fall deeper into a coma?!"

"And what if leaving her like this slowly kills her?!" Davian countered sharply, his loud voice vibrating against the stone walls. "You heard him! Her bond is incomplete! She’s tearing herself apart from the inside because it’s half-finished!"

"We need to think this through," Aidan said, his tone tight as he rubbed his temples, staring down at Maria. "We can’t act out of pure panic."

While my brothers argued back and forth, their raised voices blurring into distant background noise, I couldn’t pull my eyes away from Maria. I sat on the edge of the mattress, my thumb gently tracing the smooth, cool skin of her cheek.

My chest burned with a terrifying, agonizing internal war.

I was her mate. The last one. The entire weight of her survival was resting squarely on my shoulders, and the realization made my hands tremble. If I leaned down right now, sank my fangs into her skin, and sealed my mark, I could end her suffering. I could complete what should have been finished a long time ago. I could bind her soul to mine forever, ensuring that no one—not Noah, not anyone—could ever try to tear her away from us again.

But how could I do it while she was fast asleep?

The thought made my stomach twist into sick knots. Marking a female was supposed to be a sacred, shared moment—an exchange of absolute trust, passion, and mutual consent.

Doing it while she lay limp and unconscious in my arms felt horribly wrong, almost like I was taking advantage of her helplessness.

What if she woke up and hated me for it?

What if she felt betrayed, believing I had forced the bond onto her while she couldn’t even speak or push me away?

"Damien... please..."

I could almost hear her sweet, breathless voice echoing in my head from earlier, pleading with me to stop the fighting, begging for peace.

"Damien?" Adrein’s soft voice broke through my frantic thoughts.

I blinked, slowly looking up to see all three of my brothers staring at me. Aidan had his arms crossed tightly over his chest, his eyes narrowed in deep concern, while Davian stood at the foot of the bed, his brow furrowed.

"You’ve been dead quiet," Aidan noted quietly, taking a step closer to my side of the bed. "What are you thinking?"

I swallowed down the thick lump in my throat, my hand remaining firmly wrapped around Maria’s cold, delicate fingers. I looked up at Aidan, my eyes filled with a raw, tormenting fear that I rarely ever showed to anyone.

"It’s me," I whispered, my voice dropping into a raspy, broken confession. "I’m the only one left. I’m the reason her bond is incomplete."

Adrein froze, his eyes widening slightly, while Davian let out a low, breathy sigh, looking down at the floor.

"There is no need to suddenly start blaming yourself, as we all know," Aidan said softly, his expression softening just a fraction. "We all know, Damien...so what we need now is to find a way."

"If I mark her right now, it might save her," I said, my voice trembling as I looked back down at her pale collarbone. "It could fix her bond and wake her up." I paused. "But... how can I do that to her while she’s asleep? How can I bite her when she can’t even tell me yes or no?"

"Damien, she is dying from the strain," Davian pointed out quietly, his usual aggressive edge completely gone, replaced by genuine worry. "If it comes down to saving her life versus waiting for her permission, her life comes first...every single time."

"And what if the shock of the bite overwhelms her system and kills her instead?!" I barked back, my voice laced with pure desperation as tears burned at the backs of my eyes. "Did you hear the healer?! He said he isn’t sure! If I bite her right now and her heart stops... I will never forgive myself! I won’t survive it!"

Aidan placed a heavy, comforting hand on my shoulder, squeezing tightly. "Then don’t rush it yet. Give it a little time. Let’s see if her body stabilizes on its own over the next few hours."

I stared down at Maria, my chest aching so badly it felt like it was breaking. I leaned down, pressing a soft, desperate kiss against her cold knuckles, praying with every fiber of my soul that her eyes would just flutter open and end this unbearable nightmare.
