Damien.
The moment my fangs sank deep into the tender skin of her neck, an explosive, blinding shockwave of raw spiritual energy erupted through my entire body.
A choked, desperate gasp escaped my throat as the mate bond finally slammed shut, connecting my soul to hers with absolute, devastating force.
It felt like hot fire and sweet honey racing through my veins all at once, as every unfulfilled promise, every ounce of buried longing, and every thread of my lingering hesitation melted away in a fraction of a second.
I could feel her, and for the very first time, I could feel the inner depths of her mind, her soul, and her struggling wolf calling out to mine through the newly formed connection.
I poured every single drop of my strength, my light, and my Alpha energy directly into her through the mark, desperately trying to anchor her fading spirit back to the mortal world.
’Fight, Maria,’ I roared silently into the spiritual link between us. ’Take my energy! Take my life! Just don’t let go!’
I held the bite for three excruciatingly long seconds, my heart hammering against my ribs so hard I thought it would burst out of my chest. Then, slowly, carefully, I retracted my fangs and pulled my mouth away from her soft skin.
I fell back onto my hands, sitting on the edge of the mattress, gasping violently for air as cold sweat drenched my entire body. My breathing came in ragged, painful gulps, my chest heaving as I stared down at the fresh, bleeding mark resting right beside my brothers’.
The silence in the bedroom instantly returned, heavier and more terrifying than before.
Aidan, Davian, and Adrein hadn’t moved an inch. They stood frozen at the side of the bed, their faces pale, holding their collective breath in pure, agonizing terror as they stared down at her motionless body.
"Damien..." Adrein whispered, his voice trembling so badly he could barely get the name out. "Is she... did it work?"
"I don’t know," I choked out, my voice cracking completely as tears burned my eyes and my hands were shaking violently as I reached out, hoveringly over her neck, terrified to even touch her. "I don’t know!" I repeated.
"Check her pulse!" Davian yelled, his voice cracking painfully around the words as a broken sob escaped from somewhere deep within his chest.
He stepped closer, his broad shoulders trembling uncontrollably beneath the weight of his fear. His eyes remained fixed on Maria, as though he were terrified that looking away for even a second might make the nightmare in front of him real.
"Check her heart right now!" Davian added with full authority, as he was somewhat impatient.
Aidan immediately dropped to his knees beside me, barely seeming to notice the hard impact as his hands reached for Maria. His fingers were shaking so badly that he had to steady them before pressing them firmly against the side of her throat, right over the newly formed mark.
One second passed, then two seconds and three.... yet there was nothing and the silence that followed felt unbearably long.
Aidan’s eyes remained wide, completely unblinking, as he concentrated on the faintest sensation beneath his fingertips. His jaw was clenched so tightly that the muscle along the side of his face twitched repeatedly.
He looked frozen in place, as though he were afraid that even the slightest movement might somehow change what he was feeling.
"Aidan, speak to me!" I screamed, my voice rising into a desperate, panicked cry.
I grabbed him by the front of his shirt, my fingers twisting into the fabric as pure, unadulterated terror consumed every part of me. I could barely breathe, barely think, barely understand what was happening.
"Is her heart beating?!" I demanded, shaking him as I stared desperately into his face. "Say something!"
For another agonizing moment, Aidan said nothing, and then he swallowed hard.
A sudden, breathy laugh slipped from his lips, shaky and disbelieving, as though the sound had escaped him before he could stop it. A single tear gathered along his eyelash before spilling freely down his cheek.
He finally looked up at me, as his eyes were still glistening with tears, but the unbearable tension in them had begun to break apart, replaced by a profound, overwhelming relief.
"It’s surging," Aidan choked out, his voice thick with emotion. "I mean... her pulse... it’s beating fast, Damien! It’s getting stronger!"
Before any of us could even fully process Aidan’s words, Maria’s chest suddenly heaved upward with a violent, deep gasp, the movement so abrupt that it startled all of us into complete silence.
"Ah!"
The sharp sound tore from her lips as air rushed desperately back into her lungs. Maria’s back arched slightly off the mattress beneath the sudden force of her breath, her fingers twitching faintly as her body instinctively fought to draw in the oxygen it had been desperately deprived of.
A soft, breathless whimper escaped her lips immediately afterward, fragile and weak, but unmistakably alive.
For a moment, I could only stare at her.
The deathly pale, ghostly color that had completely drained her skin moments earlier began to disappear before my eyes. The terrifying whiteness slowly faded, replaced almost instantly by a warm, healthy flush spreading back across her cheeks. It was as though life itself was rushing through her again, restoring the color that fear had stolen from her face.
Even the ice-cold temperature that had radiated from her skin began to change.
The unnatural chill gradually melted away, replaced by a soothing, gentle warmth that I could almost feel simply by looking at her.
"Maria!" I cried out.
The name burst from my lips with overwhelming relief as I dropped flat onto my knees beside the bed. I reached for her without hesitation, immediately grabbing both of her hands and pulling them tightly against my face.
Her hands were no longer freezing, as they were warm—warm enough for me to feel the difference immediately.
I pressed them harder against my face, my fingers wrapping desperately around hers as I struggled to contain the flood of relief surging through me.
Adrien fell to his knees right beside me, bursting into loud, unrestrained sobs as he buried his face against the edge of the blanket. "Thank Goddess! Oh, sweet goddess, thank Goddess!"
Davian let out a deep, booming laugh of sheer, hysterical relief, slamming his fist against the bedpost as tears ran freely down his face. "She’s back! She’s breathing! She is alive!"
Maria’s dark eyelashes fluttered weakly against her cheeks. She let out a low, confused groan, her head turning slowly on the pillow as her fingers weakly twitched inside my grip.
"Easy, sweetheart, easy," I soothed softly, my voice trembling with profound love as I reached up to gently wipe a stray lock of hair away from her forehead. "You’re safe. We’re right here."
Slowly, agonizingly, her dark eyes fluttered open.
They were slightly unfocused at first, squinting against the soft light of the bedroom. She blinked a few times, her gaze slowly darting around the room, taking in the tear-streaked faces of all four of us hovering over her like frantic guardian angels.
"Damien...?" Maria whispered, her voice raspy, dry, and incredibly weak.
"I’m right here, my love," I murmured, leaning in to press a gentle, lingering kiss onto her warm forehead, my heart exploding with a joy so intense it almost made me weak. "I’m right here. You’re okay, and you’re going to be just fine."
Maria shifted slightly, a sudden sharp wince crossing her features as she raised a trembling hand to touch the side of her neck. Her fingers brushed over the warm, throbbing skin where my mark had just been sealed, and her eyes widened just a fraction in realization.
"You... you marked me..." she whispered softly, looking up into my eyes with a mixture of shock, confusion, and deep emotion.
"I had to, Maria," I confessed, tears spilling down my face as I squeezed her hand tighter. "Your bond was incomplete, and your wolf was fading, and you were slipping away into a deep coma." I paused. "I couldn’t lose you, I just couldn’t let you die."
Aidan leaned over her, his thumb gently caressing her cheek. "Damien saved your life, Maria. The bond is finally complete now, therefore you’re safe."
Maria closed her eyes for a brief second, taking a long, steadying breath, absorbing the heavy, warm current of energy now flowing seamlessly between her and all four of us. The chaotic, painful tension in her body had completely vanished, replaced by a deep, undeniable sense of spiritual balance.
When she opened her eyes again, the confusion had cleared, but a sudden shadow of worry darted across her gaze. She looked past me, scanning the empty doorway of the bedroom.
"Where..." Maria croaked out, her voice filled with faint anxiety as she looked up at me. "Where is Noah?"
The triumphant relief in the room instantly evaporated, replaced by a thick, heavy tension that settled over all four of us. I froze, my jaw locking tight as I looked down at her, the reality of everything that had just happened crashing right back onto my shoulders.
