Damien.
The silence inside my bedroom was suffocating, broken only by the shallow, faint sound of Maria’s breathing.
She lay in the center of the massive bed, looking small, fragile, and deathly pale against the dark sheets. I sat on the edge of the mattress, my head resting in my hands, my chest aching with a raw, agonizing pressure that felt like it was crushing my heart to dust.
Every minute that ticked by felt like an eternity. With every soft, weak breath she took, I could feel her life force slipping away just a little bit more. Her wolf was fading, growing weaker under the unbearable strain of an unfulfilled, lopsided bond.
Aidan stood near the fireplace, his arms crossed tightly over his chest, his jaw set in a hard, rigid line as he stared into the dying embers. Davian paced near the heavy oak doors like a caged predator, his boots slamming against the floorboards, while Adrein leaned against the bedpost, his face buried in his hands as he silently wept.
"She’s getting colder, Damien," Adrein whispered, his voice trembling violently as he reached out to lightly touch Maria’s hand. "Look at her...can’t you tell that her temperature is dropping." He paused, taking in a deep breath. " We’re losing her!"
"I know!" I barked out, my voice cracking under the weight of pure, unadulterated panic, as I ran my hands through my hair, clutching my skull as my mind spiraled out of control. "I know she’s getting worse!"
Aidan had said that we get back into the room, but after getting inside I have no idea what to do.
"Then do something!" Davian yelled, turning on his heel and marching straight up to the side of the bed, his ocean blue Alpha eyes burning with terrifying desperation. "The healer told us what needs to be done! The bond is incomplete because of you, Damien! You are the only one holding back!"
"Do you think I don’t know that?!" I roared, springing up from the mattress, standing chest-to-chest with Davian. "You think I’m enjoying sitting here watching her fade away?! I’m the reason she’s in this coma in the first place!"
"Then fix it!" Davian spat, shoving his finger toward Maria’s pale form. "Sink your fangs into her neck and complete the mark! Seal her bond and save her life!"
"And what if it kills her?!" I screamed back, tears of frustration and terror finally spilling over my lashes, burning my bruised cheeks. "What if the physical shock of the bite overwhelms her heart while she’s unconscious?! The healer said he wasn’t sure! If I bite her right now and her chest stops moving... if I take her life because I was impatient... I will die right alongside her!"
"Damien..." Aidan’s deep, quiet voice cut through our shouting match.
Davian and I both snapped our heads toward him. Aidan slowly walked over to the bed, looking down at Maria’s motionless face with a expression of profound, devastating gravity.
He reached down and gently placed his palm over Maria’s chest. He kept it there for three agonizing seconds before looking up at me, his eyes filled with a dark, grim truth.
"Her heartbeat is slowing down," Aidan revealed softly, his voice barely above a whisper, yet it rang out like a thunderclap in the quiet room. "It’s getting faint, Damien. She doesn’t have hours left. She might not even have another hour."
The air was completely sucked out of my lungs.
Adrein let out a choked, desperate sob, covering his mouth with his hand, while Davian froze, his aggressive posture instantly collapsing into pure, hollow shock.
I fell to my knees beside the bed, my trembling hands reaching out to grab Maria’s limp, ice-cold fingers. I pressed her hand against my face, kissing her knuckles, her palm, her wrist, desperate to feel any sign of warmth radiating from her skin.
"Maria... please," I choked out, my voice breaking into pathetic, desperate sobs. "Please, sweetheart. Don’t do this. Don’t leave me. Open your eyes for me. Please..."
She didn’t stir. She didn’t whimper. Her dark eyelashes remained completely still against her paper-white cheeks, her body sinking deeper and deeper into the dark abyss of her coma.
"Damien," Aidan said, stepping up right behind me, placing a heavy, grounding hand on my shoulder. "You have to make the call. We can sit here and watch her heart stop beating, or you can take the risk and mark her. It’s the only chance she has left."
"He’s right," Adrein agreed, stepping closer, his tears flowing freely as he looked down at me. "Damien, please. Save our mate. We trust you. Do it."
I looked up at my brothers. The anger, the fighting, the territorial jealousy—all of it had completely melted away, leaving behind four terrified men who were on the absolute verge of losing the only female who held our collective souls in her hands.
I took a deep, shuddering breath, swallowing down the suffocating knot of fear in my throat. I wiped the tears from my eyes, turning back to face Maria.
’I’m sorry, Maria,’ I prayed inwardly, my heart aching with an agonizing mix of terror and deep, possessive love. ’Forgive me if you wake up angry with me. Forgive me for taking away your choice. But I cannot let you die.’
I carefully climbed onto the mattress, leaning over her motionless body. I reached out with trembling fingers, gently tilting her head to the side to expose the soft, smooth column of her neck.
Right there, resting beside the faint, healing mark left by Aidan, was the unblemished skin waiting for my bite. Her scent—sweet lavender, rain, and warm honey—hit my senses, triggering a violent, instinctual roar deep within my chest. My wolf surged straight to the surface, demanding to claim what was ours, demanding to save our mate’s life.
My jaw throbbed as my Alpha fangs extended, sharp and burning with the intense, raw energy of the bond.
I hovered just inches above her collarbone, my heart hammering so wildly against my ribs that I could barely breathe. My hands shook violently as I framed her face, my thumb gently caressing her jaw.
"Damien... do it now," Davian whispered urgently from the foot of the bed, holding his breath alongside Aidan and Adrein.
I closed my eyes for a split second, taking one last, desperate breath.
"I love you, Maria," I whispered against her cool skin. "Live for me. Please... live."
I opened my eyes, my Grey Alpha light flaring to life, and brought my jaw down, sinking my sharp fangs deep into the tender skin of her neck.
