Noah.
My chest burned with every ragged breath I took as I dragged myself through the shadowy corridors of the lower level. Pain radiated through my cracked ribs, and the sharp taste of blood lingered in my throat, but I couldn’t afford to stop.
The guards were actively hunting for me, and time was running out. Maria was lying in a coma, entirely helpless, while those four arrogant bastards stood over her, waiting to force the final mark onto her skin.
I needed a solution. I needed a way out of this hellhole before it was too late.
I rounded a sharp corner near the old courtyard entrance, my mind frantically spinning through every possible option, when I nearly ran straight into a solid chest.
I stumbled back, clutching my side as a sharp groan escaped my lips. I snapped my head up, my vision slightly blurry, only to see Daniel standing right in front of me.
He looked entirely composed, his hands casually tucked into his pockets, a mocking smirk playing on his lips as his eyes slowly scanned my bloody face and battered body.
"Well, well," Daniel sneered, his voice dripping with condescension. "Look at the brave Alpha. You look like you just went ten rounds with a meat grinder, Noah."
"Get out of my way, Daniel," I growled out, my voice raspy and laced with pure venom as I tried to brush past him. "I’m not in the mood for your pathetic games right now."
Daniel stepped side-to-side, deliberately blocking my path once again, as he let out a soft, dry chuckle, shaking his head with a look of fake pity. "Where are you running off to in such a hurry? Are you still playing the hero?"
"I said move!" I snapped, my fists clenching tight as my gold Alpha light flickered weakly in my swollen eyes.
"You really don’t know when to quit, do you?" Daniel said, his tone dropping into a smooth, irritatingly calm drawl. He leaned against the stone pillar beside us, looking down his nose at me. "Look at yourself, Noah. You’re bleeding, you’re broken, and you’re running around this pack house like a headless chicken. What exactly do you think you’re going to achieve here?"
"I’m getting Maria out of this place," I spat out, glaring at him with pure hatred. "I’m not letting those four monsters destroy her!"
Daniel burst into a loud, mocking laugh that echoed harshly off the stone walls. "Get her out? Are you seriously still holding onto that ridiculous delusion?"
He took a step closer to me, his smirk widening as he shook his head. "Let me spell it out for you, since that heavy beating obviously scrambled your brain." He said.
I paused and glanced at him curiously, so he had been watching everything playing out recently from a hidden corners.
"At the end of the day, Maria is always going to end up with the quadruplets. Always." Daniel said, bringing me out of my thoughts.
My jaw locked tight, every muscle in my body straining as a fresh wave of rage boiled in my chest. "Shut your mouth, Daniel."
"Why? Because it hurts to hear the truth?" Daniel taunted, stepping right into my personal space, his eyes cold and mocking. "You act so high and mighty, Noah. You strut around here like you’re her knight in shining armor, like you’re better than everyone else. But the truth is, you’re nothing to her compared to them. She is tied to them by blood, mate marks, and fate. You are just an inconvenient footnote in her life."
"I warned you to shut up!" I barked, my lungs burning.
"Face reality, man," Daniel continued relentlessly, his voice dripping with pure disgust. "She belongs to the quadruplets. They own her soul, and right now, she’s lying in that bed dying because she needs Damien’s mark to survive." He paused deliberately. " What can you offer her? Nothing. You can’t save her, you can’t complete her bond, and you sure as hell can’t fight off four Alphas on their home turf. Stop acting like you’re some grand savior and accept that you’ve already lost!"
The absolute limit of my restraint snapped like a brittle twig.
Everything—the agonizing pain in my ribs, the terrifying desperation for Maria, the humiliation of being beaten by the brothers, and now this arrogant bastard mocking my utter helplessness—erupted into a blinding, volcanic wave of pure fury.
"Shut the hell up!" I screamed.
Without thinking, I pulled back my arm and drove my fist straight into Daniel’s face with every single drop of strength I had left.
CRACK.
My knuckles collided hard with his jaw. The impact sent Daniel staggering sideways, his head snapping back as he collided with the stone wall. Blood spattered onto his pristine collar, and his mocking smile instantly vanished, replaced by a dark, murderous glare.
He slowly wiped the trickle of blood from the corner of his lip with his thumb, looking at it before fixing his deadly gaze back on me.
"You really shouldn’t have done that, Noah," Daniel purred softly, his voice dropping into a terrifying, guttural tone.
Before I could even reset my stance or raise my guard, Daniel lunged forward with terrifying speed. His fist connected squarely with my injured ribs, sending a blinding explosion of agonizing pain shooting right up through my spine.
I gasped violently, the wind completely knocked out of my lungs as my knees buckled beneath me. But before I could hit the floor, Daniel grabbed me roughly by the front of my jacket and drove a brutal knee directly into my chest.
Pain blinded my eyes. I coughed up a spatter of blood, weakly swinging a wild right hook at his head, but in my battered state, I was far too slow. Daniel easily dodged my fist, grabbed my arm, and twisted it painfully behind my back, slamming me face-first into the cold stone floor.
"I told you," Daniel growled in my ear, his heavy boot coming down hard against the middle of my back, pinning me flat against the ground. "You’re nothing here. You’re just a weak, pathetic obstacle."
"Get... off me..." I choked out, desperately trying to push my palms against the stone, but my strength was completely gone. My body felt like lead, every single bone screaming in agony.
Daniel pulled his foot back and kicked me sharply in the side, rolling me onto my back. He stood over me like a dark shadow, his face contorted in sheer contempt as he raised his fist once again.
"Enjoy your sleep, Alpha," Daniel sneered.
He brought his fist down hard across my temple.
Explosive heat flared behind my eyelids, followed instantly by a sharp, deafening ring that drowned out every sound in the hallway. My vision blurred rapidly, the dark outline of Daniel’s face spinning out of focus. I desperately tried to reach out, to force my body to move, to call out Maria’s name one last time, but my limbs went completely numb.
The heavy darkness crept in fast from the edges of my mind, swallowing the corridor, the pain, and my fading consciousness whole, dragging me down into total, silent oblivion.
