Maria.

The heavy, suffocating fog in my head was slowly clearing, replaced by a warm, golden pulse of energy throbbing softly at the side of my neck.

My mind felt completely different—sturdier, anchored, and deeply connected to the four powerful presences hovering over my bed. The agonizing, tearing sensation that had been eating away at my chest before I fainted was completely gone and...the bond was whole and sealed.

I looked up into Damien’s dark, tear-stained eyes, feeling the raw relief and intense love radiating off him through our fresh spiritual link.

I knew why he did it, and strangely I could feel how close I had come to slipping away entirely but despite the soothing warmth flooding my veins, a sudden, sharp coldness gripped my chest the moment I remembered how this whole nightmare started.

"Where..." I croaked out, my voice raspy and barely a whisper as I forced myself to swallow past my dry throat. "Where is Noah?"

The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly.

The joyous, tearful relief that had filled the air just seconds ago evaporated into a thick, uncomfortable silence. Damien’s jaw clenched tight, his golden eyes darting away from mine for a split second before he looked back down.

Beside him, Davian took a sudden step back, crossing his massive arms over his chest and staring intently at the floorboards, while Adrein nervously shifted his weight from foot to foot.

Aidan was the only one who kept his composure, stepping closer to the edge of the mattress and gently placing his hand over mine.

"Maria," Aidan began softly, his tone carefully measured, almost too calm. "You need to rest. Your wolf just survived an incredible amount of stress."

"I don’t care about rest right now, Aidan!" I snapped weakly, trying to pull my hand back, though my body felt like lead. "Tell me where Noah is! Did you hurt him after I fainted?! Is he still in the hallway?!"

"He’s gone, Maria," Damien said quietly, his voice raspy as he squeezed my fingers tight.

I froze, my breath hitching in my throat. "What do you mean... he’s gone?"

"He left," Adrein chimed in, stepping up beside Damien, his face a mask of gentle sympathy that made my stomach twist into nervous knots. "Right after you collapsed, things got really hectic, and as we carried you up here to get the healer, and Noah...well, he suddenly realized he couldn’t stay."

I looked back and forth between their four faces, my eyes darting from one person to the next as I desperately searched for even the slightest sign that they were lying to me. Surely, there had to be some misunderstanding.

"He just left? Without making sure I was okay?!" I asked, disbelief and hurt twisting together in my voice, as I paused, struggling to process their words because none of it made any sense to me, and then my brows furrowed as I shook my head slowly. "That doesn’t make any sense! Noah would never abandon me like that!" The certainty in my voice came from somewhere deep inside me.

"He packed his things and walked right out," Adrein chimed in, his usual gentle warmth completely absent. His voice carried a hard, bitter edge instead. "The moment things got chaotic and you passed out, that coward couldn’t handle the heat. He suddenly took off for no reason at all."

"That’s a lie!" I snapped weakly, trying to pull myself up, though my body felt heavy and exhausted. "Noah would never just leave! Not like that, and definitely not without making sure I was okay! Especially not after he was fighting for me just moments ago!"

"Well, he’s gone," Davian growled out, a harsh, mocking laugh escaping his lips. "Turns out your precious Alpha doesn’t have much of a spine when real trouble starts. He abandoned you, Maria. Accept it."

"Stop lying to me!" Tears of pure frustration burned at the backs of my eyes as my heart hammered violently against my ribs. I looked at each of their cold, unyielding faces, my mind racing with pure panic. "He wouldn’t just leave for no reason! What did you do to him?! Tell me the truth!"

None of them answered.

Damien stared down at me, his mouth set in a hard, stubborn line, completely shutting down the emotional link between us. Aidan crossed his arms, staring at me in stony, icy silence, while Adrein simply looked away toward the far wall, refusing to meet my frantic gaze.

"Damien, please!" I sobbed, reaching out to grab the front of his shirt with my trembling hands. "Look at me! What did you all do to Noah?! Where is he?! Speak to me!"

The silence in the room grew heavy, suffocating, and terrifying. They stood over me like four stone statues, completely united in their dark, possessive refusal to give me a single word.

"Answer me!" I screamed, my voice breaking in sheer desperation as I tried to force my body out of the bed. "What did you do to him?!"

A sudden, terrifying wave of pressure slammed straight into my chest. My vision flickered violently, dark spots dancing across my eyes as a sharp, blinding headache exploded behind my temples. The emotional shock, combined with the sheer exhaustion of my weak body, pulled the air right out of my lungs.

"Maria, stop! Calm down!" Damien’s panicked voice suddenly cut through the haze, his hands reaching out to catch my shoulders as my strength completely failed me.

"Tell... me..." I gasped out, my voice fading into a weak, pathetic whimpering breath.

My heart gave a sickening, heavy thud, and the room spun wildly out of control. The golden warmth of the bond flickered and dimmed as my mind buckled under the unbearable stress.

"Maria! Stay with me!" Damien’s frantic voice sounded distant, echoing as if he were shouting from under water.

I couldn’t hold on, and the darkness rushed back in from the edges of my mind, swift and merciless, swallowing their panicked shouts and pulling me straight back down into total, silent unconsciousness.
