Chapter 159: Chapter 159: Making a Deal (Part 8)

"Simon, who in the world did you piss off? They’ve gone to such complicated lengths just to kill you! Looks like you’ve got a traitor in your midst!" Seraphina Sterling took a punch to the shoulder, and the pain was excruciating.

"This isn’t just about me anymore! If you want to get out of this alive, you’d better get serious!" Every one of Simon’s moves was lethal, giving his opponents no room to breathe. ’He’d better not find out who was using these underhanded tactics from the shadows, or they would be sorry! He’d chop them into pieces and feed them to the sharks!’

Just as the two sides were locked in a stalemate, a man stumbled back, looking utterly disheveled. He saw his two companions on the ground, then glanced at his teammate relentlessly attacking Simon, and understood instantly. He drew his gun and fired without a moment’s hesitation.

The two men dropped to the ground. But just as the newcomer started to approach, Seraphina Sterling snatched up a dagger and swiftly pressed it against his neck.

"What are you doing? I just saved you! Instead of thanking me, you’re holding a knife to your own savior’s throat. Don’t you think you’re going a bit too far?" The man was furious, struggling violently to break free from Seraphina Sterling’s grasp.

"Seraphina Sterling, what are you doing?" Simon was completely bewildered by this turn of events.

"Young Master, tell your friend to let me go! We have to get out of here now! This place is too dangerous! We don’t know when they’ll attack again!" Unable to break free from Seraphina Sterling’s grip, the man turned his pleading eyes to Simon.

"This place is certainly dangerous, but I think having you around is even more so. You’d shoot your own comrades just to gain our trust and wait for a chance to strike. You’re ruthless and your acting is spot-on, but did you really think we’d be foolish enough to trust someone so easily after the betrayal we just experienced?" As she spoke, Seraphina Sterling viciously kicked the back of his knee, forcing him to the ground.

Seraphina Sterling glanced at Simon. "Ask what you want to ask, and be quick about it. If you’ve got nothing, I’ll finish him so we can get out of here. We don’t know if they have more people on the way."

"Who sent you to assassinate me?" Simon walked up to the man, his face a grim mask. His solemn expression was imposing.

The man lifted his head. His eyes met Simon’s deep blue ones, and a murderous glint flashed within them. He suddenly spat a small, sharp blade from his mouth, lunging viciously at Simon.

Simon couldn’t dodge in time. The blade grazed his shoulder as it flew past, drawing blood yet again.

Seeing this, Seraphina Sterling launched a sweep kick. The man dodged by leaning back, then snatched the gun from the ground and quickly pulled the trigger. Seraphina Sterling dove and rolled twice, barely making it behind a pine tree to evade the bullets.

"Simon! What on earth did you do to make these people so determined to kill you?" Seraphina Sterling kept a wary eye on the man, who looked ready to fire again at any moment.

"You’re still in the mood for jokes at a time like this? You should be worrying about saving your own skin!" The words were barely out of Simon’s mouth when the man hiding behind the rock popped out again and pulled the trigger, aiming right at him.

The instant Seraphina Sterling saw him lean out, she whipped out the small silver pistol Terrence Grant had given her. She raised the gun, aimed, and fired. The whole sequence took less than a second—the blink of an eye. A single bullet struck the man squarely in the shoulder.

The man never imagined Seraphina Sterling would have a gun! And her aim was terrifyingly accurate! ’I was only watching out for her throwing knives,’ he thought. ’One careless mistake, and it’s cost me everything!’

"Who gave you the order?" Simon picked up the man’s dropped gun and pressed the cold muzzle against his head. It was clear that if the man’s answer was unsatisfactory, he would pull the trigger at any moment.

"Shouldn’t you already know, Young Master? We’re the bodyguards Young Master Allen assigned to you," the man said, clutching his bleeding wound with one hand. A smirk played on his lips.

BANG! Simon shot the man in his other shoulder. "My brother would never do something like this! Tell me who it was!"

"Pathetic! Young Master Simon, how can you be so naive? Do you really think there’s any room for brotherly love among the elite? In families like ours, brothers are nothing but obstacles in the struggle for power and wealth! You stood in Young Master Allen’s way, so he wants you eliminated!" The man’s expression grew more and more twisted.

"Shut up!" The two words were forced through Simon’s gritted teeth. He didn’t ask another question, simply pulling the trigger again and again until the man’s body went still.

"You were too rash. He was provoking you on purpose, trying to get you to kill him." Seraphina Sterling’s voice was calm, despite having just survived a deadly assassination attempt.

"I know," Simon said, resolutely holstering the gun. He didn’t spare the dead man a second glance.

"If you don’t believe it, go back and demand an answer from him yourself. The point is, what do we do now? All these people are dead. We can’t just wait for the police to find them, can we? Gun control in Apex isn’t nearly as lax as it is in Country M." ’All eight of Simon’s men must be dead. If the two of us have to clean this up, it’ll take us all night.’

"Don’t worry, someone will take care of it. And... thanks for your help." A lingering fear still gripped Simon. ’I never imagined half of my own men were here to kill me! If Seraphina Sterling hadn’t been here, I’d be dead for sure.’

"You’re in no position to be thanking me. If you really want to show your gratitude, get stronger." A faint, barely-there smile played on Seraphina Sterling’s lips.

Simon was right. Before long, the group leader from Country M arrived with a team and quickly cleared the scene.

By the time Simon and Seraphina Sterling made it back to the bonfire, everyone else had already found their gifts and returned—everyone except Genevieve Churchill.

As a wave of anxiety washed over the group, Seraphina Sterling’s phone buzzed.

[To find her, come to the pier.]
