Chapter 243: Chapter 243: Dowry (5)

"Mom? You swapped it out?" Seraphina Sterling stared at Kimberly Jennings in astonishment. She had been on guard against everyone, except for her own mother!

"That’s right! When you had Summer’s mother invite me to the shop multiple times, I found out about it! It’s a cursed object. For anyone without power and influence, getting mixed up with it means inescapable trouble!" Kimberly Jennings’s arms trembled slightly. "So I swapped it out the very first chance I got!"

"But how did you know about the Jade Bracelet? How did you get such a similar fake?" Seraphina Sterling was completely baffled. She felt as if she had never truly understood her own mother.

"Don’t you remember? Your father was killed because of this Jade Bracelet! Except, the one he got his hands on was just a fake, not the real one." Kimberly Jennings looked at Seraphina Sterling in shock. She had always assumed Seraphina had gotten ahold of the Jade Bracelet because she wanted to find out how her father really died!

"My memory of that time isn’t very clear. All I can remember are pools and pools of blood, and then you and the police showing up. I have no memory at all of how Dad was actually killed. I can’t recall it no matter how hard I try!"

At the mention of this, Seraphina Sterling’s spirits sank. ’If only I could remember everything that happened that day, maybe I could prevent something like this from ever happening again!’

"If you can’t remember, don’t force it. Some things are better left forgotten! Much better!" Kimberly Jennings sighed softly. ’What horrible thing did Seraphina have to go through? She didn’t utter a single word for three days after it happened. If she hadn’t started talking again after we returned to Tollan, I was going to have to find her a therapist!’

’It’s fine if she can’t remember. If recalling everything caused her to become withdrawn, that would be even worse!’

"In that case, giving the Jade Bracelet to Terrence Grant... won’t that put him in danger too? Those people are completely ruthless!" ’They can even hire international mercenaries, so the power behind them must be immense! After this operation, Roy will definitely clean up Nightfall and refuse any more missions related to the Jade Bracelet. But just because Nightfall won’t take the job doesn’t mean other organizations won’t!’

"Worried about me? It seems you’re not entirely indifferent to me after all! At this rate, we can get married as soon as you turn eighteen." Hearing Seraphina Sterling’s concern made Terrence Grant ecstatic. It felt like the clouds had finally parted to reveal the sun. ’My efforts weren’t for nothing! Seraphina does have feelings for me!’

"Shut up!" Seraphina Sterling really didn’t want to talk to Terrence Grant right now. It felt like no matter what she said, he could somehow twist it into being about marriage! "Just forget I said that. You’re so powerful, if anyone were to target you, they’d be the unlucky ones!"

Seraphina Sterling shot him a look. "Or maybe, the Jade Bracelet was your target from the very beginning. My mom handing it over to you wasn’t a burden at all—it just saved you the trouble of finding it yourself. After all, you were asking me about its whereabouts from the start!"

At this thought, the small ripple of emotion Seraphina had just felt for Terrence Grant subsided completely. ’Never trust anyone easily, especially not men!’

That little spark of joy in Terrence Grant’s heart was instantly shattered into dust by Seraphina’s words. He quickly moved to the side of her bed and crouched down, meeting her gaze at eye level.

"I admit it, my mission was to find the Jade Bracelet. But that has absolutely nothing to do with my feelings for you! I’ve told you before, you’re the one for me, and nothing in this world is going to change that! I asked you about the bracelet not only because it was my objective, but because I was worried you would become a target for others!"
