As time was indeed of the essence, Li Jiwen decided that his first move would be to go to the Fang family and see whether they had an interest in fighting the heavenly Dao with him.

From the previous life, he understood that the patriarch of the Fang family was a smart man, a man with some kind of future-fate sight, an ability that would have made him greatly interested in a person like Li Jiwen. Even the heavenly Dao was not totally compliant with fate. There was a programming that had controlled the heavenly Dao from the very beginning, let alone a man who was less than the heavenly Dao.

But that was not the problem now.

He thought, smiling, and moved through the void with a couple of steps, feeling the difference between the previous life and this life. He had already understood that the void itself could be tamed. His powers at the moment were so vast that even the void itself could not stop him if he wanted to disappear and reappear in the family’s own headquarters. He could do that. No one would be able to stop him, not even their patriarch, if it came to that.

But he knew that, in the very face of the heavenly Dao and the heavenly calamity, he was not powerful enough yet.

With that knowledge, he knew exactly what he must do and what he must accomplish to surpass his own limitations.

He did not hesitate. He moved.

He appeared in the very mountain range that hung in the air above the central continent, the Fang family’s lodging. The mountains floated like green-and-gold islands in a sea of cloud, waterfalls falling upward in some places and downward in others, ancient pines clinging to cliffs that should not have existed by any law of stone. It was a place built by old cultivators who had decided that the laws of the world were suggestions, not rules.

The protectors of the mountain gate saw a man appear in front of them. He looked heavenly, as if a divine existence had descended from the higher realm into that of the mortals. They could not feel his exact realm, which itself told them he was far above them, but they could feel the weight of him, the gravity of him, the way the air bent slightly around his shoulders.

They bowed their heads, brought their hands together, and asked slowly who he was.

Li Jiwen said, "Hello there."

The two protectors, both True Spirit realm cultivators who had lived for thousands of years, said, "We would not expect an elder of a high realm such as your highness to come to the family unannounced. We ask that you wait until someone of higher command can be summoned. That is, if you have no problem with that, master."

Li Jiwen smiled at the men. "No problem," he said. "No problems. Get a higher commander."

They knew this man was not coming with malicious intent. If he had been, they would already be dead. They could feel, as True Spirit realm cultivators, that he could topple them down and destroy them utterly and mercilessly with one hand. So they knew he was not an enemy, and would not hurt them until someone of higher rank came.

Under these pretenses, they decided to summon a higher person from their own ranks, especially knowing that if they did anything wrong, the family would face horrible fate. Even if the patriarch and the elders could come and stop this man, it would have been already too late. Hundreds of thousands of the family’s residents would be killed and abolished in the first exchange.

As cultivators who had already lived for thousands of years, and as outsiders who had been with the family long enough to know its politics, they understood that greatly.

So they did not move stupidly.

That actually impressed Li Jiwen. He noted, internally, that probably the Fang family had already moved and learned from the very mistakes that had toppled families in the elder ages. A family that trained its gate guards to think before swinging was a family that had survived a long time. He filed that away.

He waited. He slowly looked up at the heavens.

He could feel something peeking down. It could not do anything, not yet, but he could feel the cold weight of its gaze. The Eye of Judgment was not yet manifest, but the heavenly Dao was watching.

He just looked up, smiling, his eyes barely wide, showing his teeth, gazing at the very existence of the heavens.

He did not make a move. The heavens did not make a move.

The heavens themselves understood that, before the heavenly calamity and before the programming of the last two years of the calamity, it could not actually make moves against mortals without a reason. The heavens were ruthless, yes, but they had a programming that would not let them do things outside the rules. The rules shackled them, and shackled the heavenly calamity, and shackled the heavenly Dao itself.

That was why the rules were such an important thing in the world.

Li Jiwen did not care too much about the peeking and the anger that the heavens was giving him.

He just smiled.

He looked at the person approaching through the gate of the mountain.

It was none other than the person he had respected in the previous life, Fang Liu, in the flesh.

Fang Liu smiled at him and said, "Fellow Taoist. It is my honor to see such a powerful Taoist of the Dao Seeking realm. What a pleasure to meet you now, senior."

Li Jiwen came closer and said, "If it is not the young master of the Fang family, Fang Liu. It is truly impressive to see you in the flesh."

Fang Liu inclined his head. "It is an honor for me that senior knows my name. It is indeed an honor."

Li Jiwen came closer and said, "Well, now, I have something of great importance, and I wish to meet the patriarch."

Fang Liu’s eyes shone with a brief inner light, and he looked, for a moment, like a man listening to a voice no one else could hear, communicating with his father across some private channel of cultivation.

In a couple of seconds of silence, he said, "Indeed, senior, my father is now waiting for us. The patriarch of the Fang family welcomes you."

Li Jiwen smiled. "Lead the way, fellow Taoist. It is indeed an honor to meet the Heavenly Immortal that is the patriarch."

Fang Liu, moving forward, said, "Well, now, I will lead the way."

They began to move. Their steps covered thousands of li in a single stride. This was the power of higher-level cultivators. They could destroy mountains. They could destroy continents, continents the size of great planets where nothing else dared live.

Such power had even threatened Li Jiwen, back in the previous life, when he had been a small Nascent Soul cultivator with a borrowed Void Step and a borrowed ring of concealment. But now, after fighting hundreds of thousands of fate agents and killing them, after turning a continent into a bloodbath, after looking the heavenly Dao in its one great eye and being erased from existence by it, he knew just how powerful, and how ridiculous, the powers of a cultivator were.

He understood, now, just how powerful the high-level ones were, too.

Li Jiwen looked at the back of Fang Liu as they walked and thought, ’To think that in this life I would meet Fang Zun. Fang Zun, the patriarch of the Fang family. It is truly something of interest. I have heard many things about him, but to meet him now, that is interesting indeed.’

He kept moving.

He looked to the heavens again.

He could feel the angry look of the heavenly Dao peering down on him, and it could not do anything against him. Not yet. Not without a reason.

He smiled, and he continued to move.
