Li Jiwen understood that, in this life, the heavenly Dao probably could not attack him directly.
It needed some kind of excuse to do that. It was bound by its own programming, whether intentionally or not. He didn’t care, and he didn’t actually know, and the matter was out of his hands anyway. He decided that he would make amends with every power that had already gone against the heavenly way in the previous life. Those who had already sided with the heavenly will would be utterly destroyed.
This was the only way. This was the only path for surviving this calamity.
Whether he would actually end the same or not, he did not care. The only thing he cared for was trying, and trying alone was already an honor.
He reached the mountain range where the patriarch of the Fang family held court, and he entered slowly behind Fang Liu.
He looked at the room.
It was ancient, old, and classical, with not much of the modern within. Wood that had been grown, not carved. Pillars that had been living trees before someone had persuaded them to stay still. A floor of dark stone that drank the light. There were no arrays of crystal screens, no array-projected maps of the continent, no spirit-stone mechanisms. Only a low table, a chair, and the smell of incense that had been burning for longer than Li Jiwen had been alive in either life.
He looked at the family leader, the patriarch, and bowed his head slightly with his hands together.
"I finally meet you, senior," he said. "I never imagined that this day would come, and this early. It is indeed an honor to meet such a powerful person, a person of legend and myth. The patriarch of the heavenly Fang family, Fang Zun."
Fang Zun, the patriarch of the Fang family, looked at him. His eyes were old and ancient, filled with wisdom and knowledge that had already surpassed the world itself. They were gray, the gray of stones at the bottom of a sea, the gray of clouds that had been gathering for a thousand years.
"Well, now, young man," he said, his voice too peaceful for the weight of his gaze. "Let’s not set too much with formalities, don’t you think?"
Li Jiwen laughed slightly. "Indeed, such a powerful and legendary person as you, not really liking formalities. But must the weak fear that formalities are some kind of respect of some sort, senior?"
He stopped, and waited for Fang Zun to say anything.
The patriarch laughed. His voice was old, and at the very same time youthful, like a young man speaking through an elder’s throat, or an elder speaking through a young man’s. He looked like a man in his thirties. His long black hair cascaded down his back and over his shoulders. His eyes were gray, filled with wisdom and knowledge that had already surpassed hundreds of lifetimes.
This was a legend, a person who had already lived for more than a million years. The Fang family was indeed lucky to have such a legendary person within its strengths.
Fang Zun, the actual leader of all humans in this world.
Fang Zun closed his eyes slowly, then opened them again.
"You are most interesting indeed, fellow Taoist," he said. "So you came here, knowing that I was interested in such a person, a person promised within the heavenly principles themselves."
Li Jiwen laughed. "The heavenly principles and fate itself are not things that interest me. The only thing that interests me, truly, is how to stop what you know is coming."
Fang Zun became serious.
"Well, now, fellow Taoist," he said, "let’s not talk about that thing now. The heavenly Dao is watching."
The old man moved his hand. A seal bloomed out from his palm and encompassed the entirety of the room, every wall, every pillar, every grain of incense ash hanging in the air. The room was, suddenly, outside the scope of the heavenly Dao. Li Jiwen felt the cold weight of the watching gaze lift, then disappear entirely. The silence was startling.
Fang Zun rose from his chair and came closer to Li Jiwen.
Li Jiwen had never expected to be met with such a person. The man moved like a young warrior, but the air around him moved like an old god. Finally, with him this close, Li Jiwen could sense that the man in front of him was not an ordinary Heavenly Immortal, but some kind of existence that transcended the normal Heavenly Immortal realm, though not totally.
With his powers, and the armors and weapons that had merged with him, Li Jiwen had already understood many things about cultivation and cultivators overall. This was knowledge that came with the actual realm itself. He knew that, even though his own battle power was on the same level as a Grand Immortal of the middle stage, he was still weaker than Fang Zun.
This man was hiding something. Li Jiwen could tell.
But he did not feel any kind of immediate danger, so he decided to go with the flow. He would make amends with him and try to forge a great alliance.
Fang Zun came close to him and said, "Well, fellow Taoist, I wanted to ask you something. Have you already known that the heavenly calamity was dawning upon us in about ten years or so?"
Li Jiwen laughed. "Well, indeed, fellow Taoist, the heavenly calamity was foretold long ago. With our own powers and our own knowledge, and people of our level, we are already connected with fate and the intuition of knowing the future."
Fang Zun laughed loudly. "Well now, fellow Taoist, that’s interesting, don’t you think? I have another question. How would you like us to see an alliance to stop the heavenly calamity, if we could?"
Li Jiwen looked at him with interest in his eyes, although the interest was not totally real.
"Well, fellow Taoist," he said, "an alliance sounds good indeed. But there is a single problem."
He paused.
"What is the way to stop the heavenly calamity? The heavenly Dao itself wants everything dead. And even us, with our own powers, whether it be you as a Heavenly Immortal or I as a Dao Seeking cultivator, cannot stop a calamity that even Grand Immortals of the great perfection stage would face hardship to stop."
Fang Zun laughed, his interest in the man in front of him sharpening. "Well now, fellow Taoist, let’s not think with negativity. We must understand one thing, that the heavenly calamity is something of great interest to us all, and not only you or me. The heavenly calamity brings down the end of an era, the end of the entire universe, if we may say so. So, in the meantime, if we could not stop the heavenly calamity, then we can use it to our own advantage. Wouldn’t you think so, fellow Taoist?"
Li Jiwen thought for a second, understanding that he meant advancing into the Primordial Sea, letting the calamity wipe the lower realm clean and using the chaos as cover to ascend. Clever. Cowardly. Self-interested. Exactly what he would have proposed, in the patriarch’s position.
But that was not the problem for Li Jiwen. His mission was clear, and he would not be able to bypass anything if he did not end the mission and stop the heavenly calamity. He knew that. Fang Zun did not.
That was the problem at the moment.
Li Jiwen thought for a couple of seconds, then said, "Well, fellow Taoist, I want to add something that is of miniscule importance. You cannot break through the actual barrier of existence that surrounds the universe and enter the Primordial Sea."
He let that land.
"That is the problem, fellow Taoist. The heavenly Dao itself is sealing the world and the universe in its entirety. It would not let anyone, even if a Grand Immortal of the great perfection stage came, pass. The heavenly Dao would stop it, or stop them, with all its might."
Fang Zun knew that. He let out a slight laugh and said, "Well, fellow Taoist, to each their way and to each their own. I will tell you something that is of great importance."
He paused.
"The heavenly Dao is but merely a puppet at the moment."
