Li Jiwen decided not to let any amusement or surprise show on his face when he realized Fang Zun was hinting at something.
Finally, the patriarch moved his hand again, and another barrier sealed the room, a second skin over the first, denser, older. The entire room was now outside the scope of the heavenly Dao entirely. Li Jiwen could feel the weight of the watching gaze lift not just from the room but from the very air he breathed. Even his own existence, normally faintly tracked by the heavens through his status as a transmigrator-anomaly, was, for this small pocket of space, invisible.
Fang Zun said, "Indeed, fellow Taoist. The heavenly Dao is merely a puppet at the moment. It is controlled by an outer deity, if we can even call it that. An outer existence from the very Primordial Sea itself, if you know about that."
Li Jiwen knew about that.
"That existence is not a Heavenly Immortal, or even a Grand Immortal, or even a Saint Immortal," Fang Zun continued. "I mean, that is not something that matters. What we can actually think about is whether we can defend against them, no matter how powerful they are."
He paused, choosing his next words.
"But there is only one catch in the lower realm. Existences of the Primordial Sea cannot actually do much here. The lower realms have their own laws, put in place by the grand Dao that rules the entire four chaos. Those laws cap what an outer entity can directly do here."
"But there is another problem," he said. "Although it cannot truly intervene on its own, the heavenly Dao in this realm is only as powerful as a Saint Immortal, and much more powerful than a normal Grand Immortal at the great perfection stage."
Li Jiwen did not let his face react. A Saint Immortal. The heavenly Dao’s avatar, here, was Saint Immortal-tier. He filed that number away like a knife.
"So even with our power at the moment," Fang Zun said, "we cannot truly fight at all, rule, or actually free ourselves from the shackles of the calamity that will come eventually. You know that. I know that. That is the problem at the moment. So, I came up with an idea. If we cannot fight them, then we can slowly topple them down from the shadows."
He moved slowly. His hand found a small piece of debris on the table he had been sitting at, a chip of pale stone, perhaps the corner of an old array tile, and he turned it over between his fingers.
"Fellow Taoist," he said, "have you ever thought that the heavenly Dao itself had some weakness, and that it had opposed itself with some sort of a human thought?"
Li Jiwen smiled. "We are the poison. Cultivators. Humans. Existences that consume the resources of the heavens and earth are that poison."
Fang Zun laughed. "Indeed. But have you ever thought that probably being a poisonous existence to the Dao is not merely a normal thing, but something that was built into us by another existence that wants to topple down the heavenly Dao?"
Li Jiwen kept silent after that.
Fang Zun understood, and said, "Well now, let me explain something to you, fellow Taoist. The world and this realm of ours is but merely a bubble between tens of billions of bubbles, at least. All in the Primordial Sea. To think that a small bubble can be so full of life and existences, that alone is one thing and one thing alone."
He leaned forward slightly.
"An existence long ago created humans and existences alike, just to face that entity that wants to topple down every heavenly Dao in the universe in the Primordial Sea. To stop that entity. What does that mean for us now?"
Li Jiwen answered before Fang Zun could actually continue. "Well, it means one thing and one thing alone. Even though we are weaker at the moment, we can topple down the heavenly Dao under one condition and one condition alone. We can reach the things that we were created by."
Fang Zun’s eyes lit, very faintly, with something that might have been approval.
"Exactly," he said. "That is the point of all my talk. We were created by an existence, an entity that was called the Human Ancestor of the Primordial Sea. He created the entirety of the human place within all the Primordial Sea, and within every bubble that is a realm of its own. To think that we now can actually use his own powers to our own advantage, that is indeed something of great recollection."
Li Jiwen said, "But now there is a problem, fellow Taoist. How can we harness that power if we did not even know that it existed?"
Fang Zun said, "That is another point. A great point. But the answer is quite simple, actually. We will communicate with our deepest roots, the deepest existence within our soul, body, and entirety of being."
Li Jiwen hummed. "Well now, there is another problem. What can actually happen if we did not do that? Will we be erased anyway?"
Fang Zun said, "Probably. That is the gamble that we are in at the moment. Either to die, or make the impossible."
Li Jiwen looked at the patriarch for a long moment.
"You are an interesting person, fellow Taoist," he said finally. "Indeed."
He could still feel something weird about the man in front of him. Something that felt uneasy, but at the same time so familiar. He could not put his hand on it. It looked like Fang Zun himself had some kind of understanding of the matter as well, but neither said a thing to the other. The two of them circled the unspoken thing like two old wolves circling a fire.
He said, "Well now, fellow Taoist, I should go and try something. In the meantime, we will stay in contact if that is not a problem with you."
Fang Zun said, "No problem at all. You can leave a communication device. In the meantime, each of us will be doing our own research that is not probably problematic."
Li Jiwen nodded. "You know that my own recollection at the moment of the events that will happen is quite easy and simple. I want to unite every power that is human in the entirety of the universe at the moment, in this bubble alone."
Fang Zun said, "Well, good luck with that. Most of them are hot-headed, or people that were so old, that their minds had already become a sitting stone in dogmatic existence."
Li Jiwen said, "Well, that is something for another time, fellow Taoist."
Then he disappeared, as he said, "So long."
As Fang Zun was alone now, he smiled slowly, then looked up at the heavens, through the barriers he had laid, through the layers of his own concealment, and thought, ’It is him. And to come to my door by his own feet...’
The waters in this world were not as shallow as Li Jiwen thought, and he would learn it the hard way.
