Li Jiwen appeared in another place.
He was sitting in a huge courtyard by himself, empty paving stones, a single withered plum tree at the corner, a koi pond with no koi, and a wind that did not move. The kind of courtyard a man rents when he wants to think and does not want to be disturbed by anything, including the wind.
He thought, ’Well now, there is a problem that has appeared. I do not believe a single word from that man, for some reason. My intuition tells me there is something truly interesting, but as well fearful, about that man’s existence.’
’Fang Zun, the ancient ancestor of the Fang family. Truly an existence of great renown and power. I cannot even think about what can actually make me feel this unsettled by him.’
Li Jiwen could not tell exactly why that man gave him that feeling, and that was something that had not sat right with him. He understood that he did not like the feeling of being uncertain about someone or something. That feeling did not make it better. He understood that he would need to see exactly what that man’s true colours were.
Unlike Fang Liu, who was truly a friendly person, someone that he could feel the pure friendship of, Fang Zun was an existence that could scheme, could actually betray. Li Jiwen did not like the thought of that. He had written many villains like that man, back on Earth, in the long nights when he had nothing else to do but feed words into a keyboard and pretend he was someone. He could not tell why that man, exactly, was giving him this feeling.
Many old monsters of the world had not given him a feeling like that.
He smiled to himself and said, "I’m going crazy, or what? Well, let’s not think about that too much. Fang Zun is interesting, but as well some kind of existence that is weird and shrouded in mystery."
He paused.
"I don’t like the feeling of being left out, or being manipulated by someone. So I will not do anything at the moment, only see what I can do in this place to stop that man, or make something that will interest the heavens."
He understood that, at the moment, he would need to actually get every human power of the world at his side, when he would know how he could stop the heavenly calamity. He had never believed a word from what Fang Zun said.
He thought, ’There was something like joking about that. Not the small details or the big details, but the all-around idea. I had heard about the Human Ancestor, and I could tell that such an existence had indeed been the one to create humanity...’
’But other than that, the long story about great things that were rivalling the heavenly Dao, that was hard to believe. Especially that the heavenly Dao would not show any sign of favoritism. It only showed its own programming of destroying humanity after some time.’
Li Jiwen hummed in thought.
’But the system is so mysterious in its existence as well, that it can actually give me a mission to be technically immortal. So what exactly is the system’s own origins?’
’Is it just some gimmick from an existence outside, even outside the Primordial Sea? Or is it an existence that can topple down everything I know and everything that we will know in the future?’
This was indeed a problem. These were not the thoughts of a man being controlled or groomed into something. The system was probably something that was much more powerful than him, or any of the existences within the Primordial Sea.
He knew that because the system could give him anything from his novels. Anything he had ever written. Any artifact, any technique, any fruit, any weapon, any armor, provided he had imagined it on a page on Earth. He had written tens of novels, mostly bad, mostly abandoned, some published in the small webnovel corners of the internet. Out of those tens of novels, there were still powerful things that he was not actually choosing, only because he did not know the deep waters of this world and the heavenly Dao’s scheming.
He was afraid that the most powerful things he could get would actually be detected by the heavenly Dao, and he would not be able to do anything with what he had.
There were things that could actually give him much greater power, even a Primordial Saint would not be able to face him. But it needed time. Thousands of years of time. And ten years was not even enough to have a single moment of the glory of that power.
He understood that probably the waters were deeper in this world than he had imagined.
Finally he said, with a smile on his face, "Well, one could never think about anything other than one’s self. But at the moment, the most probable thing is to think."
Li Jiwen stopped and looked up at the heavens.
He could still feel the anger coming down. The heavens could tell that this existence, this man, was an enemy. A great enemy, even. One that would not even be killed, even if they wanted. The heavens themselves understood that this was an enemy of everything that they stood for.
He let out a sigh.
"Ah," he said. "Let’s topple down everything that tries to belittle me."
Then he disappeared, and decided that probably he would go to the Future and Past Temple.
That was a power that had been a terrifying existence in its own right. They used the powers of time and space to their own powers and their own abilities, and they used nothing else. That was why they were destroyed first by the heavenly Dao. The future and the past were things that the heavenly Dao did not like seeing people actually make amends with, whether it be humans, existences of other races, or any other thing. Time was the heavenly Dao’s own weapon. It did not share its weapons.
But destroyed was not the same as gone. Survivors sometimes crawled out of the wreckage.
Suddenly, as Li Jiwen appeared at the temple at the very edge of the mountain, a half-broken archway clinging to a cliffside, a few courtyards still standing, smoke still curling from a single chimney that should not have been smoking, someone appeared in front of him.
The man was old. Impossibly old. Wrinkles like canyons. A long white beard that had been groomed every day for what looked like a billion years. Blue eyes, the color of the infancy of wisdom itself.
He smiled and said, "Fellow Taoist Li Jiwen, we finally meet."
Li Jiwen looked at the man in front of him and thought, ’Well, that’s interesting.’
The man in front of him was none other than the Grand Taoist of the temple, an existence of the Heavenly Immortal realm. He looked like he had been waiting. For him.
Well, things were getting more interesting.
