The first person Leo suggested was Thalvyr.
"A Low 4-star Flame-oriented Lizardman specialised in spear."
"The second person is his wife, Zharrissa. A Pseudo 4-star mage capable of casting high-level magic, including protection and damaging spells."
"The third person is Naelith. She is a wood elf capable of wielding flames with exceptional control and sits at a Low 4-star strength level."
There were two other Pseudo 4-star elves—Elirin and Lyswenna—but Leo didn't mention them because they would stay back in the territory. Their capability to cause destruction wasn't that great compared to Naelith, Sylrael, or Zharrissa.
As for the last one, Leo didn't go for a strength-based selection, but rather utility.
"The last one, though not having high strength, is Aeila. She currently sits at High 2-star strength, but her main strength comes in support. She can telepathically link our minds for effective communication over a range of around 4 to 5 kilometres. Additionally, she has a Pseudo 3-star golem under her command that helps her in any battle."
Everybody listened to Leo's words intently and couldn't help but feel terribly inferior. It was like he literally had slaves who could trash them around.
And when they heard his last person's description, they could only sigh.
"Leo... from which angle does a High 2-star being controlling a Pseudo 3-star golem sound weak?" Uraan asked.
But they quickly went back to brainstorming the candidates Leo had brought forward.
"So... since the elf—Sylrael—has confirmed participation, we need to choose two out of the four," Aaron said, looking at Sylrael.
He couldn't gauge her strength, so he simply looked back at Leo.
"A spear user..." Uraan muttered before turning towards the eagleman.
"I think we should take the Lizardman. Having two spear-wielding combatants will be great. Rhaegar can take to the skies and counter any attacks while the Lizardman, Thalvyr, can be on the ground... and if we have them train together for a while, they could move in tandem."
"But a flame-oriented... we already know 2 other confirmed flame users... Ronan and Cecil—the 11th-rank girl. So taking Thalvyr will bring that number to 3..."
"4," Leo calmly corrected.
"Currently, my most dominant element is flame."
"Oh yes... You tamed a flame Wyvern... how could we forget?" Ronan muttered, sounding a bit jealous.
"He tamed a Wyvern?!" It was news to Uraan and many others.
"How many beasts do you even have?"
"Well, we will get to know it soon enough, no?" Leo replied.
"Yeah... right."
"But if that's the case, wouldn't that make the presence of this flame-wielding elf a bit less effective?" Tavian asked, and everybody nodded.
"Wait, you say the 11th-rank student will fill one of the slots... don't tell me the majority of them will be combatants? Like from 11th to 20th rank." Leo asked with a frown.
"Of course not. At most, we are taking 3 combatants," Tavian said.
"And since it will be based on capabilities, they will most probably be the 11th, 12th, and 13th-rank students. Though I guess this Miho girl will change places with the 13th-rank student," Tavian continued.
"As for the rest, 3 will be people who can brew varied potions and are good with ingredients. 3 scouts, and 1 person will have extensive knowledge of wildlife and the surroundings."
Leo nodded. But there was one confusion.
"But why do we need potion brewers? Could we not simply buy them?"
The others looked towards each other.
"You must be either acting like you don't know, or you must be some shut-in holed up in a cave to meditate. Because we're not allowed to get any help the moment the competition duration starts. Except for our weapons, we aren't even allowed to talk to any professors."
"What?" Leo muttered.
What sort of competition is this?
But they decided to talk about it later.
"So, Naelith's participation is cancelled... that leaves the Mage Lizardwoman and the elf that can connect our minds..."
Everybody started contemplating and putting forward their opinions because this was indeed a tough choice.
A strong all-rounder who would be a massive support in any battle, or an individual whose presence could technically improve the overall performance of everybody through effective communication.
"What was the range again?" Tavian asked.
"Around 5 kilometres."
"5... to be honest, even if weaker than the others, she might be a better choice," he said while looking up at Leo.
"Since you aren't aware, just know that major matches will be held on open ground whose area might even exceed the trial cities. Though we are bound to be separated at times, a communication range of 5 kilometres is still massive. We could be free of the worry that any of us could be caught off guard and defeated while the others are uninformed. This prevents loopholes that might come in our defence," Tavian reasoned.
Others also nodded.
"And since the communication is instantaneous and discreet, others will be blissfully unaware of our talk and even the fact that we already have backups coming," Uraan added.
"It will work as a great surprise element."
"And she even has a Pseudo 3-star golem. We can have her defend the brewers."
"And her presence even alleviates some pressure from Tavian, who could work on building more destructive arrays instead of being busy crafting communication talismans," Lyra pointed out.
Though there was one problem with Aeila. Her golem didn't have a power source, meaning it needed to be constantly supplied with mana. And for that, Leo would need to be within the 10-kilometre range.
When he told the others the same thing, Tavian offered a simple solution: engraving a suitable array directly into the golem's body.
"But wait... if she isn't able to power it, then how does she control it?"
"The golem is my summon," Leo responded with a straight face.
There was a moment of silence in the room as the top 10 students looked at Leo.
"How many more abilities do you have?!" Uraan was genuinely freaking out at Leo's capabilities.
He now wholly believed there were levels to these things, and Leo was the top-tier player.
After that, Brant clapped his hands.
"Alright! Since things have been decided, call each selected individual to get acquainted and see if any sub-team formation is possible."
"Meaning, the same types divided into groups. Ice users in one, fire in one, wind in one. Then weapon-based: sword, bows, greatswords, etc. And try seeing who will go best with the others."
Everybody nodded, and Sylrael and Miho went to call Thalvyr and Aeila so they could get to know the others.
During that time, Leo approached Brant to talk about his situation.
