Chapter 12: 12.Choice that shapes you-2

Ah... I have done it now.

As Reina gulped down her embarrassment, the situation began to turn in her and Mylo’s favor. With the pressure from the crowd, Braden backed down. But he threatened Mylo that he will take revenge.

He won’t go after Mylo, will he? I don’t want Mylo to get into any trouble because of me.

She looked at Mylo, but he was lost in his thoughts. She couldn’t figure out what he was thinking, but his grip was getting looser with every passing moment.

Why does it feel like he’s trying to break free from me? I don’t want him to do that...

She looked down, her messy appearance reflected even in her shadow. She couldn’t help but think about how she had turned out like this.

I have met many people in my life.

Some were really kind. Some were mean. Some didn’t care about me at all.

It was a very simple and normal division of any normal person’s encounters with people. She herself was a completely normal girl, albeit with a rare hobby.

I never cared about the mean ones; they would just make fun of me and my dear mangas.

They would disturb me even though I didn’t want to have anything to do with them.

It was the memories of her earlier days of manga reading, a time when she had just begun diving into what has now become a vast, consuming world.

So...with time, I developed my own personality of completely shutting off anyone who would approach me.

I chose my own hobby.

It definitely was effective at first.

But with time, I noticed a very bad thing about myself.

I could no longer enjoy the company of anyone, and I always ended up ignoring them.

Once a child has developed a way of throwing themselves into a hobby that brings them so much joy, it is a very challenging thing to change back. But that doesn’t mean that passion always brings positive things; it can very well have severe side effects. The manga pages had captured her focus so completely that she had slowly lost the ability to connect with the real world.

This subconscious habit also affected those kind people who tried to become my friends. They got no satisfying response from me in return for their efforts.

...And I saw many of those kind people turn into bad ones.

They would get frustrated with my silence and end up making fun of me.

She would go through these exhausting cycles: kind people would approach her, but as they tried to get to know her and met only her blank wall, they would either get annoyed and make fun of her, or simply cut off contact, treating her as though she had never existed.

Her free hand grabbed her skirt tightly, her occupied hand increasing its grip on Mylo’s.

I don’t want to go through any of that anymore... especially not with him... I know I’m not mistaken... I have definitely fallen in love with this guy!!

Her heart was already beating with a rhythm mirroring Mylo’s name; it was too obvious of a fact for her to just ignore.

But what should I do? I’m not sure if he would even want to be friends with me. After listening to him and seeing his actions, I know he didn’t save me because he has feelings for me.

I was just a random girl who was being bullied, and he came to save her.

Even if he befriended me out of kindness, how would he react to my true, awkward self...?

She was feeling as much nervousness as she was love for him. Every thought of hers was just misleading her, trapping her in a constant loop of feeling her love for him and angst from the thoughts of never getting together.

Forget about him loving me back, would he even remain friends with me?

Her heart gave a sharp twinge at the thought, her stomach churning. She was close to pressuring herself into fainting.

But the scene from earlier played out in her mind. Mylo had been trembling in fear, but he was still standing, protecting her. She looked intensely at her hand, which was now tightly securing a still-dazed Mylo.

No! Pull yourself back, Reina! You have read hundreds of shojos; you’ve seen all the clichés—the accidental hand-holding, the dramatic rooftop confessions! Come on, think of a solution!

Her knowledge of shojo mangas was the only thing going for her; what was the point of all those read volumes if they couldn’t even help her in a dire situation like this?

A way to find out if he will get along with and accept me, without suffering the same painful cycles of the past.

As she searched through her head, her thoughts stopped, led to a sudden, dazzling idea. It was an idea she would have never thought of in any normal situation, much less followed through with.

W-wait... n-no, surely I can’t do that, right...? B-but... in Chapter four of my favorite series, it worked... could it work here...?

Just the thought of the embarrassing idea made her face turn red, fuming from embarrassment.

N-no! It’s still way too embarrassing, but...

She did not really have any other option. Because her mind refused to give her any other choice, her heart refused to even consider thinking of anything else.

I can’t think of anything else!

Her brain had only just started turning but had already given up after coming to just this one, ridiculous solution. So, now she had to take action or give up.

She tried to calm herself down by taking a glance at Mylo, who was staring blankly into space, and made her choice.

I-I have to do it! No matter how it turns out in the end, I can’t just not try.

With pure determination to follow through with her embarrassing idea, she started walking in a certain direction, pulling Mylo along.

Mylo was now snapped out of his thoughts. His hand pulled back a little, his gaze drilling a hole in the back of Reina’s head, clearly signaling her to let him go. But she, determined, continued to walk, leading Mylo to her secret spot she had just discovered this morning.

Either he will accept me after this, or he will reject me! I’m not going to suffer for days wondering if I will succeed or not!
