Chapter 11: 11.Choice that shapes you-1

The grand iron gates of the State University of Mirage were supposed to represent a fresh start, but to Reina Voss, they simply represented a giant, annoying obstacle between her and her scheduled reading time.

She walked through the swarming crowds of laughing freshmen with a completely detached curiosity.

She didn’t really care what others thought of her.

Let them whisper about her thin, slightly crooked round glasses.

Let them stare at her plain, mismatched clothes that were clearly chosen for pure comfort over the latest university fashion trends.

Her hair was pulled back in its usual messy bun, with loose strands sticking out at odd angles, but none of that mattered.

Her mind was busy calculating something far more important: finding the perfect, secluded spots on campus where no one would ever disturb her!

’The old campus courtyard looks promising’

She thought, adjusting the strap of her worn backpack.

Low foot traffic. Plenty of shade. Perfect for catching up on the latest volume of my favorite manga without people looking over my shoulder.

She was almost finished taking the standard campus tour, her mind completely absorbed in a world of ink and panels, when reality decided to hit her, literally.

Oph!

Reina stumbled back as her shoulder collided with someone. Her glasses knocked slightly crooked on her nose.

"Watch where the hell you’re going, you freak!" a sharp, high-pitched voice spat out.

Reina blinked, quickly straightening her glasses. Standing in front of her was a brunette with sharp, attractive features, her face contorted into pure disgust as she adjusted an expensive designer bag.

Vanessa Kade. Hanging off Vanessa’s arm was a tall, broad-shouldered guy in an expensive leather jacket, Braden Vance.

"I-I’m sorry," Reina muttered quickly, wanting nothing more than to dissolve into the background. "I wasn’t looking. Please just leave me alone."

"Leave you alone?" Braden stepped forward, his booming voice cutting right through the corridor. He looked angry, his jaw clenched tightly. "Is that how you apologize? You bump into my girl and then act like she’s the one bothering you? Show some damn respect!"

A collective gasp rippled through the surrounding students. Instantly, a crowd began to gather, drawing the snickering attention of people who clearly had nothing better to do.

Vanessa crossed her arms, looking Reina up and down with a mocking laugh. "Look at this charity case, Braden. Did you buy those clothes from a clearance rack? Or did you just pick them out of a trash bin this morning?"

The crowd chuckled, the low whispers echoing right out of the courtyard and hitting Reina’s ears.

Inside her mind, Reina was practically vibrating with irritation.

Why are they so dead set on me? Can’t they just leave me alone for one second? It was a simple accident!

"I already said I’m sorry," Reina tried to say again, her voice low as she attempted to step past them.

But Vanessa shifted her weight, deliberately blocking her path. "Oh, no you don’t. You don’t just walk away after ruining my morning, you broke nerd."

More insults followed, pouring effortlessly from Vanessa’s glossy lips. Reina squeezed her eyes shut, her stomach twisting.

It was the same old story. The crowd. The laughter. The complete lack of help. She was just going to have to stand there and endure the public humiliation until they got bored.

"Wow. It’s only the first day," a new, smooth voice suddenly drifted down from the side, "and the dogs are already out here barking for attention."

Reina’s eyes snapped open.

A boy had stepped directly in front of her. His dark hair swayed slightly as he angled his body, perfectly blocking her from the worst of the stares. He met Braden’s malice-filled gaze evenly, a slow, provocative smile spreading across his face.

Reina stared at his back, her mind instantly locking up.

Uh...?

Her brain completely failed to process the situation.

Who is he? We don’t know each other? Why is a complete stranger standing up for me?

Suddenly, a very specific, incredibly cliché trope from a shojo manga flashed behind her eyes.

The female lead, helpless and trashed by a cruel villainess, suddenly rescued by the dashing prince charming who swoops in to save her existence!

Her face instantly flushed a bright, furious red. A chaotic string of thoughts exploded in her head.

No way... no way! He doesn’t even know my name! Did he... did he fall in love with me at first sight or something?! Oh my god, how incredibly romantic!

As the confrontation escalated between the boys in the background, a completely different set of feelings directed at the exact same conclusion began to take root.

A feeling of romance, pure and unadulterated, sprouted right in the center of her chest.

But then, a dark panel from a psychological manga replaced the shojo fantasy.

Her eyes narrowed behind her thick glasses.

Wait. Hold on. I need to be vary. What if he’s only doing this for an ulterior motive?

What if he’s a dark prince, obsessed with my body, manipulating the situation just to trap me in his own little world?!

But as she looked closer, her gaze drifted down to his hands.

They were shaking.

The trembling was subtle, but Mylo’s hands were vibrating with a raw, unadulterated terror against his wrists as he stood his ground.

Ah... Reina’s breath hitched.

This wasn’t an invincible fantasy prince.

He wasn’t some calculated dark mastermind either. He was terrified.

He was scared enough to make her own heart tremble.

But if he was that afraid... why wasn’t he running back to safety? Why was he taking a beating just to protect her?

Then, Mylo’s cold, cutting words rolled off his tongue, defending her honor and calling out the bullies for ganging up on a sweet girl just to feed their pathetic egos.

The question marks in her heart finally settled into something calm, clear, and absolute.

He hadn’t fallen in love at first sight.

...I was the one.

She was the one who had just fallen in love at first sight.

Her entire life had lacked a deeply important humane connection. She had spent years alone, reading about bonds in books but never holding one in her hands. Her heart told her clearly, with a sudden surge of conviction:

I will not let this relation go away. I cannot allow that to happen.

Suddenly, Braden lost his mind. With a violent surge of strength, he grabbed Mylo by the collar, lifting him almost entirely off his feet.

Mylo gasped for air, his legs dangling slightly above the tiled floor, trembling violently as his confidence shattered.

Seeing the boy who had protected her about to be crushed, Reina didn’t hesitate.

The sprouting phase was over. The tree of love had just been born inside her heart its roots digging deep within.

She stepped forward, her small, pale hands reaching up. Without a hint of shame, she interlocked her fingers tightly with his, letting the dampening warmth of her grip stop his trembling completely.

"Please... don’t hurt him," Reina shouted, forcing every single ounce of power her quiet lungs could muster into the silent corridor.

"Don’t bully us... just leave us alone! Please!"
