Chapter 36: 36.Characters that matter later-2

Surprised, Mylo paused in his tracks and walked over to the old man.

"Do you have something you wanted to talk about, Uncle Joe?"

"You know, son... you’re still young," Uncle Joe said, his tone softening with genuine concern.

"You shouldn’t carry so much tension, so much stress. It won’t bring you anything good, believe me.

’’If you ever feel like you need someone to talk to, or if you run into any trouble... don’t hesitate. You come to this old man, alright? I’m a lot more amazing than you think! Hahaha!"

Mylo blinked, a wave of warmth washing over him. Ah, he thought.

I guess my weird attitude from this morning made him worry.

But that’s just the kind of man Uncle Joe is. If he sees someone struggling, he can’t help but step in.

"Well... there are a few things going on, Uncle Joe," Mylo admitted, rubbing the back of his neck.

He didn’t want to dump his heavy baggage on the old man, but lying straight to his face felt wrong.

"I didn’t really want to talk about it, but don’t worry. They’re... things I’ll definitely be able to solve on my own."

Uncle Joe chuckled softly and shook his head.

"Problems aren’t always meant to be solved, son. Sometimes, it’s better to just ignore them. Remember that, okay?"

If I could just ignore my problems, life would be a whole lot easier, Mylo thought to himself with a quiet, rueful smile.

Before Mylo could reply, Uncle Joe reached deep into his pocket and pulled something out.

"Here. For you."

He extended his palm to reveal a small, brightly wrapped piece of candy.

Mylo took it, a surprised look crossing his face.

"Uncle Joe...?"

"My granddaughter gave it to me," the old man said, his eyes crinkling at the corners as a proud, adoring smile spread across his face.

"I tried to give her your chocolate, but she insisted she wasn’t taking anything for free. So, she traded it with her favorite candy. Hehe. Isn’t she the cutest?"

A small, genuine smile tugged at Mylo’s lips, the faint sweetness of the moment softening the heavy edge he’d been carrying all morning.

"Yeah... she really is cute, Uncle Joe," Mylo said gently.

Slipping the candy safely into his pocket, Mylo gave the old man a warm nod and bid him farewell, stepping out onto the street to face the rest of his day.

[NOTIFICATION]

Daily Quest: Complain to Aldoff about his brother.

Penalty: Lose your chance at laying Reina.

.....

"Not this type of quest!"

Mylo shouted in outrage, kicking at the air in sheer frustration.

A passing mother quickly pulled her small child closer, covering the boy’s eyes as she hurried her pace.

"Mommy, mommy, look at him-"

"Shh! No, no, honey, don’t look at weird guys," she whispered loudly, rushing away down the pavement.

Left standing alone on the sidewalk, Mylo pinched the bridge of his nose and took a few deep breaths, desperately trying to pull himself together.

No, no, don’t panic, he consoled himself internally, trying to find a silver lining amidst the absolute absurdity of the System.

This is still... fine. It’s fine. At the very least, I’ll get the standard stat increase once it’s done.

Let’s just hope physical stats actually get the buff this time...

At the same time, at the office of disciplinary office.

Meanwhile, at the college, inside the professor’s office...

Miss Chloe finished organizing a thick file and placed it neatly on the heavy wooden desk.

The polished brass nameplate in front of her read: Deghthral Hearth.

"Professor, these are all the revisions required for the new rule changes," Miss Chloe said smoothly.

"Although I’ve already reviewed everything, you should still give it a final look before signing off."

The man seated in the high-backed leather chair reached out, pulled the file toward himself, and casually flipped through the pages.

"Come on, Chloe," he chuckled. "You’re the one who completed it. There’s really no need for me to double-check your work, is there?"

Without another thought, he uncapped his pen and swiftly signed the last few pages.

"You’ve been working entirely too hard lately. You ought to take better care of yourself," he added, offering her a pristine, polite smile as he closed the folder.

"Minor, tedious tasks like these can easily be left to the junior faculty."

He sat impeccably dressed, iron-clad in a sharp three-piece suit that matched his dark hair.

Though a few subtle wrinkles lined his face, his overall appearance was strikingly clean and composed.

"They would have taken all month to complete it," Miss Chloe replied with a weary sigh.

Transitioning quickly, she brought up the next pressing item on her agenda.

"By the way, Professor... we still have to decide on the request made by Aldoff Vance."

Her voice was laced with obvious worry as she continued.

"Frankly speaking, I am not in favor of it. Just last month, we received complaints from a parent regarding drug use on campus.

’’Even though no further inquiries came of it, we should still be taking precautions. The first-years have only just begun their induction program, allowing them to host a welcome party this early might not be a wise decision."

"Ha ha ha," Professor Hearth chuckled warmly. "They are young blood, Chloe. We can’t simply toss their request aside without considering their intentions. Aldoff is a responsible man."

He pushed his chair back, stood up, and walked casually around the heavy wooden desk.

"I am certain he will handle everything with care, without any breaches or violations," he continued, stopping beside her.

"Besides, this is a wonderful opportunity for the freshers to build connections with their seniors. It will help sharpen their communication skills as they mingle and settle in. We ought to be supporting them."

Professor Hearth gently placed a hand on Miss Chloe’s shoulder, his tone smooth and persuasive.

"In fact... don’t you think it is our solemn responsibility as educators to help our students enhance their skills whenever we can?"

Miss Chloe’s shoulder shifted slightly in uncomfortable resistance, but Professor Hearth did not remove his hand.

"If... if you think so, then all right, Professor," she submitted quietly.

Deciding not to press the issue any further, she subtly turned her body as if to signal the end of the conversation. Hearth, however, paid her discomfort no mind and continued, his tone remaining effortlessly smooth.

"In fact, I have a better idea," he murmured.

"Instead of leaving everything in their hands, why don’t we participate as well? What do you think, Miss Chloe?"

His hand slid slightly, his fingers rubbing against her shoulder in a slow, patronizing stroke.

Miss Chloe’s gaze dropped to the floor, her jaw clenching silently.

"As the disciplinary committee, we ought to ensure everything runs smoothly," he proposed, his voice laced with an uncomfortable closeness.

"You can join me, and the two of us can monitor the party together. What do you think? Would you be able to come?"
