Chapter 37.Characters that matter later-3Chapter 37: 37.Characters that matter later-3
"I... I will think about it, Professor," Miss Chloe said, her voice dropping to a low, shaken whisper.
"Yes, that’s good, Chloe," Professor Hearth replied smoothly.
Finally, he lifted his hand from her shoulder and strolled casually past her toward the window.
"Well... well then, I’ll go submit these files to the main office," she stammered, seizing the excuse.
Grabbing the folders off the desk, she quickly turned and made her exit.
Walking down the silent corridor, she pulled the files tightly against her chest, her fingers digging into her arms as if trying to steady a sudden tremor.
Back in the quiet of his office, Professor Hearth stood in stillness.
He slowly raised his hand, staring down at the palm that had just rested on her skin, a faint, unreadable smirk playing on his lips.
He brought his hand up to his face, breathing in deeply through his mouth as his eyes narrowed.
"Miss Chloe... Miss Chloe... Miss Chloe," he murmured, the faint, raspy whisper barely disturbing the quiet of the office. "How long are you going to make me wait?"

"Hey, Reina!"
"Eeep!"
Reina jumped, her hands quickly flying up to catch her round, oversized glasses as they slid down the bridge of her nose.
She whirled around, only to find Mylo waving at her with a sheepish grin.
"O-Oh... goodness, Mylo," she squeaked, exhaling a quiet, relieved breath as she pressed a hand to her chest.
"You startled me a little..."
"Uh, sorry," Mylo chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck.
Falling into step alongside her as they walked deeper onto the college campus, he tried to keep his tone light.
"So... feeling good?"
"Uh... y-yes," Reina replied softly, nudging her glasses back up her nose with a single finger.
"Yes, I’m good."
For a moment, a quiet, hesitant pause settled between them.
Both of them instinctively cast their gazes downward at the pavement, searching for something to say.
But a second later, their eyes met again, and a light, shared chuckle broke the silence.
"Yeah... we don’t need to do that, do we?" Mylo asked with a faint smile.
"No, we definitely don’t," Reina Voss murmured, offering a shy, gentle smile that eased the rest of the tension away.
Neither of them was the outgoing, extroverted type, but in each other’s quiet presence, the heavy air melted into something surprisingly comfortable.
Mylo stole a quick glance at her as they walked. It still felt a bit unreal to him that they were friends.
Did she try a little extra today?
It wasn’t anything major, but there was definitely a subtle hint of effort.
A few minutes later, they reached the lecture hall, a typical large university room with tiered seating rising toward the back.
Most students were already scattered around, forming little groups.
Spotting an empty row on the third step, Mylo moved toward it.
When he turned back, though, Reina was lingering behind.
"Hey, Reina? You coming?"
"Huh?" Reina blinked, a little confused.
"Unless you have somewhere else to sit?" Mylo asked.
Reina’s eyes widened slightly, but she quickly shook her head.
"A-Ah, no! I’m coming!"
’Wait... we’re sitting together?’ she thought to herself, a soft, quiet warmth blooming in her chest.
’Isn’t this the classic ’main characters end up sitting next to each other’ cliche?’
A panel from a romance manga flashing through her mind.
Shaking the thought away, she glanced over at Mylo.
He was already preoccupied, casually scanning the crowded room.
Reina opened her bag and gently touched the cover of a book inside, almost like she was trying to steal a bit of courage before pulling it out.
"Hey there!"
A sudden voice cut through the air, startling her so badly her hand froze mid-motion.
"I didn’t see you yesterday. Is this seat available?" a guy asked Mylo, casually tossing his bag onto the seat beside him.
Mylo looked him up and down, trying to place his face.
"I couldn’t make it yesterday. But yeah, go ahead."
The boy snapped his fingers with a quick grin and sat right down.
"Thanks. By the way, I’m McKenzie Parkinson. Just call me Mac, okay?" he said, extending a hand for a quick dap.
Mylo reciprocated the hand-shake. "Yep. I’m Mylo Zane."
"And what about you?" Mac asked, turning his attention toward Reina.
Startled by the sudden question, Reina pushed her glasses up and replied in a soft voice, "I-I’m Reina... Reina Voss."
"Reina, got it! I remember seeing you yesterday," Mac chuckled.
"Man, yesterday was so boring, wasn’t it? Wasted the whole damn day just listening to the professors ramble on."
Mac was a pretty normal guy as far as I remember.
We had a few casual chats back then, but never really became close.
But... How much do I even know that I can judge any one.
This is a completely different environment than what I had experienced previously.
Maybe It’s not too bad to let things flow and experience a new side of people.
"I’m surprised you actually sat through all of that," Mylo said out loud. "Even if I’d made it yesterday, I probably would’ve bunked halfway through."
"Tell me about it, dude," Mac sighed. "There were literally two teachers standing by the gates monitoring everyone.
’’No idea why they were guarding the doors like that, but whatever. I just hope today is just basic club promos. Otherwise, I’m definitely skipping the next three days."
"Well, we’ll just have to wait and see," Mylo replied.
Unfortunately for you, today is still going to be mostly speeces.
Suddenly, another student called out to Mac from a few rows back.
"Hold that thought," Mac said, tapping Mylo’s shoulder as he stood up. "Be right back."
As Mac walked off to chat, Mylo turned his head slightly toward Reina.
"Hey, you don’t have to be so nervous around people. If you don’t feel like talking, it’s totally fine."
"I-It’s not like I don’t want to talk," Reina murmured softly, adjusting her glasses. "I just... never really know what to say."
"Well, that’s alright," Mylo offered a faint smile. "We can figure that out with time."
Reina nodded slightly, feeling a tiny bit relieved.
Glancing down at her open bag, her fingers lingered on the spine of her manga before she quietly pushed it back inside, setting the thought aside for now.
"Is this seat available?"
A sharp, confident female voice broke through, this time, addressing Reina.
A girl dressed in a bold, stylish outfit that included jeans shorts and cropped top was standing in the aisle right beside her.
"U-Uh... yes," Reina stammered nervously.
"Great," the girl muttered coolly.
Without another word, she pulled out the chair, sat down, and immediately pulled out her phone to start scrolling.
"Hey, hey, hey! Well, look who we have here!"
Mac’s voice chimed in as he walked back to his spot, instantly spotting the newcomer.
"If it isn’t Miss Queen herself!"
