Chapter 38: 38.Characters that matter later-4

The row was set up with four seats: the stylish girl on the far left, then Reina, then Mylo, and finally Mac on the far right.

"Ugh, you’re here?" The girl made a visibly disgusted face as she looked past Reina and Mylo at Mac.

Shaking her head in sheer annoyance, she grabbed her bag and stood right back up.

"I’d literally rather sit in the very back," she scoffed, turning on her heel to leave.

"Are you really gonna act like that? Brandy, didn’t we become friends yesterday?" Mac called out.

"Ha! When did we ever become friends?" she snapped, turning back with a scoff.

"Are you sure you didn’t poop your brains out this morning?"

"Oh, come on. Still with that language?" Mac grinned, unfazed.

"We literally became soulmates yesterday."

THWACK!

A loud slam echoed as Brandy slammed her palm onto the desk, her eyes blazing.

"Next time you say something like that, I am kicking your balls open and making an omelet out of them!"

"Hey, hey, that’s a surprisingly unique way to flirt," Mac teased, leaning back.

"Though if you wanna taste ’em, you don’t need to make a sandwich first."

Brandy’s face flushed with rage. Reaching for her shoulder bag, she pulled it back, ready to launch it straight at his head.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa! I was joking! I was joking!" Mac immediately raised both hands in surrender.

"Come on, listen to me for a second, man. Look at poor Reina! She’s practically crying because you left her side like that."

"N-No... I’m not crying..." Reina squeaked, waving her hands in a timid protest.

"Look at her eyes! They’re all tearful!" Mac pressed on dramatically.

"Don’t you feel ashamed, abandoning this poor girl?"

Brandy glanced down at Reina.

More than anything, Reina was just dying of embarrassment from suddenly being made the center of attention.

"She doesn’t look like that at all," Brandy muttered, though her tone softened slightly.

"Oh, come on! Look at her! I can’t believe you’re so stone-hearted," Mac scoffed. "Just sit down, alright?"

"You bastard," Brandy hissed.

Before the argument could escalate any further, a sharp, loud clap echoed from the front entrance of the hall.

"All of you, take your seats immediately!" a stern voice boomed through the room.

Clicking her tongue in frustration, Brandy glanced around, realizing every other row was already packed.

"I’m only sitting here because the other seats are full," she growled, dropping heavily back into the chair next to Reina.

Mac just smirked to himself, chuckling softly under his breath.

Leaning sideways, Brandy whispered to Reina in a softer tone, "Hey... I obviously wasn’t leaving because of you, okay?"

"I... I..." Reina stammered, her voice completely trailing off.

Watching Reina shrink into her seat from the sheer sensory overload, Mylo couldn’t help but shake his head in quiet amusement.

"I assume you all can hear my voice clearly," a clean, confident voice echoed across the hall.

The chatter died down instantly as everyone focused on the man in the crisp three-piece suit stepping up to the podium.

A line of teachers followed silently behind him.

"First of all, my apologies for not meeting you yesterday, an urgent matter required my attention," he began, his presence easily commanding the room.

"You have all officially become students of our prestigious university, and for that, congratulations. Let me first hear a loud round of applause for yourselves!"

A wave of clapping started throughout the room.

"Is that all? Make it louder!"

The applause swelled, filling the hall with sudden, vibrant energy.

He raised a hand, smoothly bringing the noise back down.

"I am Deghthral Hearth, department head and overseeing inspector for the new freshers," he announced with a welcoming smile.

"I welcome you all to this university with open arms."

"Our college has spent years shaping talents who have gone on to conquer every corner of the world.

"As responsible young adults, I am sure you have already reviewed the curriculum. Beyond the core subjects, we offer a wide range of elective courses spanning almost every interest imaginable."

He leaned forward slightly, offering a warm, assuring smile.

"I can promise you that this college, this faculty, and everyone here will be beside you, no matter which path you choose.

’’Remember this: no matter where you stand in life, which mountains you climb, or which seas you conquer, this institution will always be proud to stand with you."

"Ugh, give me a break," Mac groaned under his breath, rolling his eyes as he leaned over to Mylo. "I can smell the bullshit from here."

Of course it’s bullshit.

This guy is a total fraud.

This college is probably in the bottom ten when it comes to actually helping its students. It’s all a cheap show.

Meanwhile, Deghthral Hearth continued his speech without missing a beat.

"If you encounter any non-academic issues, you are free to consult our disciplinary head," Professor Hearth said, gesturing toward the line of faculty members behind him.

When no one stepped forward, he paused and struck his forehead lightly. "Ah, I almost forgot! I am the disciplinary teacher! Ha ha ha!"

A few polite, dry laughs scattered across the front rows at his attempt at humor.

"In any case, you can also reach out to our deputy head if you need anything," he continued, walking over to a female professor.

He smoothly slid a hand over her shoulder, pulling her slightly closer.

"Isn’t that right, Miss Chloe?"

He held the mic in front of her.

"Of course," Miss Chloe replied smoothly.

"Students will receive assistance with any academic or non-academic matters. For consultations, you may reach out directly to me or any of the faculty present today."

"Indeed," Deghthral chimed in, quickly moving down the line toward an older gentleman before Miss Chloe could say more.

His brushing past her shoulder a little rougher.

"And this is Mr. Harsh, our senior professor. He will be in charge of your core academic inquiries."

Professor Harsh smiled and reached out, aiming for a warm pat on Deghthral’s shoulder.

Mid-air, Deghthral’s hand shot out, grabbing Harsh’s arm by the shoulder to stop him dead in his tracks.

A brief flicker of raw disgust flashed across Deghthral’s eyes, mutely screaming, ’What the hell do you think you’re doing?’

Before anyone could register the tense moment, Deghthral’s expression softened back into a flawless, welcoming smile as he smoothly moved along, introducing the rest of the faculty one by one.

"Now then, I have no intention of taking up any more of your valuable time," Deghthral finally said, addressing the room once more.

"I believe our vision and intentions for this institution are entirely clear. From this point forward, the stage belongs to your student representative, who will guide you through the rest of the orientation."

He gave a sharp nod to signal the end of his address. A modest wave of applause broke out as he and the other faculty members began filing toward the doors.

Before leaving the stage, Deghthral paused beside a tall, blonde student waiting in the wings.

"You’ll take charge from here, Aldoff?"

Deghthral asked, handing over the microphone.

The tall blonde student took the mic, flashing a bright, confident smile.

’’Of course, Professor."
