Chapter 79: 79.On the hunt, with warrior comrade!-4

Mylo’s eyes reflected the hollowness of the Barebone. Its massive, bony frame moved through the trees, circling tightly around them.

I haven’t completed any other quest beside Tkern’s.

I can’t face it without raising my stats!

Mylo’s breath came in ragged gasps as he looked over at Tritia, who was clutching her stomach to stave off the continuous bleeding.

"Tritia, use your healing once more!"

"But Mylo... will you be able to handle it? Tell me!"

"Yes, yes, come on! I will! I’ll handle it! Now do it!"

He offered his hand, which Tritia grabbed immediately as she muttered, "Mutual healing."

Instantly, Mylo felt an unopened wound tear across his own stomach, his ribs throbbing with intense pain as if someone were violently pulling them apart. He wanted to grab it all and throw them away.

Sensory numb! sensory numb! sensory numb! sensory numb... he repeated frantically in his mind.

Seeing them, the Barebone roared and lunged straight at them.

Kraaattattattattatt!

Mylo yanked Tritia to his side, trying to deflect the incoming scythe-like fangs with his antler. But the antler offered no leverage, and the creature’s strike raked cleanly across his arm.

"Aghhh!" Mylo cried out as three deep gashes tore into his forearm.

"Mylo!"

"Don’t worry, don’t worry! Come on, run! We can’t fight it right now!"

He yelled out, pushing Tritia out in front of him as they bolted.

Casting a worried look back at his wounded figure, Tritia could only follow his instruction.

Both of them ran through the thick forest bushes, the sound of crushing wood getting closer second by second.

"We should part ways," Mylo tried to say, but Tritia cut him off instantly.

"Shut up! You say anything like that again and I’m jumping on you before that monster! Hmm!"

Both of them took heavy breaths as they navigated through the thick forest.

Mylo’s ears caught the sound of grinding gears jumping all around. The heart of his wanted to jump and run away. If possible, Mylo would even allow that.

Damn it!

Sensing the monster leap toward them, Mylo turned and tried to protect them. His antler and machete, scraped against the Barebone’s scythe-like fangs.

The glowing red spikes broke off one after another.

Tritia also jumped into the air, kicking off the trees to strike at the creature. But no matter how hard she tried to hit it, her claws were unable to damage its bony tail.

’’Haayahhh!’’

The extreme force of the monster’s blow lifted Mylo into the air and crashed him backward through the bushes.

’’Mylo!!’’

Kicking off its bones, Tritia leapt right after him, rushing to Mylo’s side.

The grinding sound escaped the Barebone’s jaws as its bone-built tail shot straight up.

"What?!"

The tail wrapped around Tritia’s legs mid-air like a snake.

Pulling her in, it thrashed her violently against the surrounding trees before hurling her directly at Mylo.

"Tritia! Tritia!"

Mylo cried at the top of his lungs as Tritia’s battered body came crashing into him, sending both of them skidding into an open clearing.

"Tritia! Tritia, open your eyes! Tritia! Tritia!"

Her just healed body went motionless. Her wounds bleeding again in harmony with new openings.

No matter how frantically he shook her, her eyes remained shut, her body completely motionless.

"No, no, no... Tritia, Tritia..."

He kept crying out, trying to wake her up, but she showed no signs of movement.

A louder sound of grinding bones echoed as the monster leaped from the trees, landing right before them. Mylo gathered Tritia’s motionless body into his arms, holding her close to his chest as he aimed his machete at the creature.

Glancing backward,he saw the red tinted black, barely shadows of tress far back.

He realized they were at the edge of a cliff, a sheer drop whose bottom was completely lost in the thick, black smog.

A howling crack of bone echoed through the air. It was different than before.

Skre-kre-kre-kre-kre-jre-kre-re-re-re-e-e-e!!!!

Hearing it, Mylo’s body trembled with a mixture of fear and rage, it sounded almost as though the monster was laughing at their pathetic situation.

Grabbing his machete tight, Mylo wanted nothing more than to lunge at the monster and crush it bone by bone.

But the weight in his other arm held him back.

He glanced down at Tritia once more, then back at the monster slowly advancing toward them.

With every step, its scythe-like fangs dug deep into the earth. The closer it got, the more frantic Mylo’s breathing became.

Pushing off his legs, he stood up, cradling Tritia tightly against his chest.

Without wasting another second, he turned on his heel and sprinted straight toward the edge.

The Barebone let out a roar as it surged forward at full speed to intercept them, but Mylo didn’t hesitate, he reached the cliff and jumped blindly into the abyss.

The monster lunged with all its might, but seeing Mylo throw himself over, it tried to brake, its fangs gouging deep furrows into the dirt as it skidded to a halt right at the brink.

It dipped its head over the edge, searching the depths, but found no trace of Mylo.

Its jaws ground together in frustration as it pulled back, its hollow eyes turning away before the Barebone vanished into the deep forest.

The entire area below was shrouded in a thick black mist, heavy like dense fog.

Instead of towering trees, massive blades of grass stretching over ten feet tall choked the landscape. Wall-like cliffs rose so unnaturally high that their peaks were entirely hidden in the smog.

At the foot of the cliff wall, Mylo’s eyelids flickered open.

’’...ha!...haah!...ha..ha...’’

He tried to feel his legs, but there was no sensation at all.

Shifting his head to the side, he saw the unconscious girl still cradled in his arms, half of her body buried in the muddy soil.

Barely able to command his limbs, Mylo forced his hand to move, pulling Tritia’s thin frame closer to his chest.

The trembling hands covered her whole back, he wondered just how small the girl was.

He stared out into the sea of thick, towering grass, his chest heaving with ragged breaths. Leaning his head back against the dirt, he muttered weakly to himself:

"I... I give up."
