Chapter 80.Life that requires struggle-1Chapter 80: 80.Life that requires struggle-1
Every breath made his body flinch.
Every small flinch made his legs sting, and every sting almost made him cry out in pain.
Mylo held his breath, his eyes flickering back and forth between Tritia in his lap and his surroundings.
He couldn’t see what might be hiding even half a meter away. The dark grass, stretching over ten feet tall all around them, completely blocked his view.
Uncertainty weighed heavy in his heart.
I give up... I can’t continue this any longer.
Carefully supporting Tritia, he tried to caress her cheek. But seeing a bleeding cut on her skin made him stop his hand and pull back.
He grunted softly, his entire body screaming at him to just lie down.
Consequences be damned. How could he let her, how could he let this girl suffer in that condition?
His fallen head rested on top of Tritia, feeling a damp warmth around his nose. Hot tears fell onto Tritia’s face. Sniffling to himself, Mylo took deep, shuddering breaths.
He looked around once again. Nothing had changed. It was still impossible to tell if someone was standing right behind the towering grass.
The thought made him gulp down imaginary saliva.
Pulling Tritia closer, a faint grunt escaped her mouth.
"Tritia... Tritia..."
His heavy yet gentle hands lifted her, trying to wake her.
"Open your eyes, Tritia. Please. Please open your eyes."
"Ah... ah... my... my..."
"Yes, Tritia, it’s me! Mylo! I’m here, don’t worry. Hey, please use your skill."
Mylo spoke all in one breath. Her skill was the only way her condition could improve right now, so it was the first thing he begged for. He shook her lightly, trying to keep her awake and push her to activate it.
He grabbed her hand and slowly raised it to his face. Her hand, coated in muddy clay, felt ice-cold against his skin.
"Tritia, please. Come on... use your skill."
A low grunt escaped Tritia’s mouth.
The next moment, Mylo wanted to rip himself apart.
He bit down on his lip so hard that blood rolled down his neck. Carefully picking Tritia up, he set her beside him before rolling sideways, his almost numb legs kicking into the wet ground.
Sensory numb! sensory numb! sensory numb! sensory numb! sensory numb...!
The skill he had held back on until Tritia used her mutual healing was now being spammed frantically in his mind.
He buried his mouth in the mud, refusing to let a single scream escape.
Raising his head, he wiped his face, his tongue tasting the alien grit of dirt.
’’Haah... haah... haah...’’
He took deep, ragged breaths.
"Mylo... Mylo..."
His head snapped toward the sound of Tritia’s voice. Her frail eyes were looking back at him.
She was trying to slowly sit up, her thin limbs trembling at every movement.
"Tritia!"
Mylo forced his broken body to her side, supporting her as if someone were about to snatch her away.
He pulled her back onto his lap, leaning his head against the cold stone wall.
Tritia’s body rested weakly against Mylo’s chest, her breath ragged as her hand slowly reached out to touch his. Deep cuts were gouged across his arm. The bleeding had stopped, but the flesh was still pulsing, mud sliding off the open wound.
"Tritia, do you need to... do you need to use mutual healing again?"
"N-no... I am... I am all right right now."
Closing her eyes, she listened to the fast, non-stop pounding of Mylo’s heartbeat against her cheek.
"Do you... do you think you can guide us toward the cave?" Mylo asked.
"Hmm... Not in this situation," she coughed, her throat sounding scratchy and rough.
"But if I can see from somewhere up high... then I can probably tell the direction. I remember the landscape."
She paused, taking a shallow breath.
"Why are you asking? Tell me."
"We will go search for an open area," Mylo said. "You will try to find the path, and then we will run to the cave. We will not fight any monster at all and avoid any danger."
"Hmm... But then what about your... what about your quest?"
"Ha... haha... That quest? It’s not important. Your life and my life are what’s important."
"But didn’t you say that your life depended on the quest?"
"Haha... I was lying. I’m sorry. I just wanted to get you to help me. It doesn’t matter. The quest was just... anyway, it doesn’t matter. Can you move? Are you able to move?"
"Hmm. I think I can now. Are you okay? Did I perhaps exchange a lot of injury? Tell me."
"No, you didn’t," Mylo replied softly.
"Did you forget? I have my own skill, Sensory Numb. It doesn’t matter how much you transfer. If you feel tired, just use your skill, all right?"
Tritia’s eyes flickered open as she stared at him, bewildered. Turning her head down, a faint mutter escaped her lips.
"Liar..."
Mylo heard her, but he didn’t have any energy left to react.
They stayed there for the next fifteen minutes, Mylo keeping a sharp eye on their surroundings. There wasn’t a single second where his eyes drifted shut.
As he felt Tritia’s breathing stabilize, he forced himself up, helping her to her feet alongside him.
"Now then... let’s... let’s move out."
Although he said the words, his trembling hands signaled something completely different. Before them lay dark, towering grass taller than Mylo himself, rooted in foot-deep mud echoing with the strange, squelching noises of hidden insects.
"Hmm. I can walk on my own," Tritia said softly. "Make sure not to leave."
She reached out, grabbing Mylo’s trembling hand and interlocking her fingers tightly with his.
Mylo slouched down a little and nodded, offering a weak smile.
"Yeah... Let me stay close."
Slowly, they began to make their way forward. The soft rustling of the towering grass was the only sound around them. Every single step was an ordeal, their legs sinking a foot deep into the thick mud before they had to force themselves to pull out and take another step. Bit by bit, their figures disappeared into the dense greenery.
Every now and then, Mylo flinched. The sound of their own footsteps kept catching him off guard.
He tightened his grip on his antler, which now only had two sharp spikes left, and brushed his other hand against his waist, confirming his machete was still securely strapped.
"Mylo..."
"Yes, Tritia?"
"I hear something."
Mylo stopped dead in his tracks.
The rustling of the grass beneath them ceased immediately, leaving the space so silent that his ears rang with the heavy thumping of his own heart.
Gulping down his panic, he scanned their surroundings. It was useless, everything was a blur of dark blades.
He focused entirely on his hearing, but picked up nothing at first.
Then he caught Tritia looking off to the side.
He turned his head, straining his ears in that direction.
That was when he heard it, a sharp fissh-fissh through the stalks.
His heart almost stopped. The rustling paused, then flared up again, repeating in a rapid rhythm.
It was moving continuously, and fast, as if something was sprinting straight toward them.
"Run!" Mylo yelled.
Mylo gripped Tritia’s hand with everything he had as they sprinted through the dense thicket.
Every time she slipped or tripped in the foot-deep mud, he caught her before she could fall, pulling her right back up and keeping their momentum going.
But the sound was closing in fast. The rustling grew louder, sharper, and far more frantic.
Panicking, Mylo changed course, veering off their path into a new direction, only to stop dead in his tracks-Why was the rustling even louder over there?
He pivoted and ran back with all his might, Tritia right beside him. His mind raced back to the steep cliff wall.
The stone wall.
It was the only spot that wasn’t completely surrounded by grass on every side. If they could just reach the wall, they wouldn’t be exposed from behind.
He tried to sprint toward it, but his legs froze. He looked around in six different directions, his mind going completely blank.
Where the hell did we come from? Which way is the wall?
He glanced down at the mud. Their footsteps had carved a clear trail, but the path led straight back into the direction where the rustling was loudest. His chest heaved as his breath grew wild and shallow.
Just then, Tritia gave his hand a firm tug, gesturing to their left.
Without a second thought, Mylo bolted left.
Then, suddenly, the rustling stopped.
Both of them skidded to a halt. They had no idea which way to run now; there was no sound left to run away from.
Mylo frantically scanned their surroundings, spinning around while Tritia did the same. They stood back-to-back, pressing against each other for support.
Drawing his machete, Mylo braced himself.
Fissh!
The rustling erupted again, right in front of him. Unable to hold back his surging anxiety, Mylo let out a raw scream.
’’arrgghhhhhhhhhhh!’’
The towering blades of dark grass parted. Out from the shadows burst a massive frame, a Bearash, swinging its narrow, rock-hard forearm down straight at them.
