Chapter 86: 86.Let this one become our ceremony-2

How many times had Mylo considered his own miserable situation, using his past as a crutch to justify his actions while blindly running toward the future?

For a fleeting moment, he wondered if his whole life was just an endless loop repeating in his mind. Was he finally losing his mind? The thought was almost funny.

What if this is all just a dream? A delusion I made up because I desperately wanted to live.

He tried to dwell on the thought, but the searing agony tearing through his broken body dragged him straight back to reality.

His fingers tightened around the hilt of his machete. He was still holding onto it.

He looked up, his bloodshot eyes tracking Tritia as she charged the giant.

When had her demeanor changed so drastically? Was it after the brutal fight with the Barebone? He wondered, his thoughts drifting.

He glanced to his side. Standing right beside him in the dirt was a phantom of his older self.

A dry chuckle bubbled up in Mylo’s throat.

"Heh... why do you have such a sore expression on your face?"

You... you wild bastard...!

His older self spat, brow knitted and teeth clenched in a bitter, ugly grimace.

"Hah, I know, I know why you’re looking at me like that-ugh-uk-ha-haah!"

Mylo rasped, coughing up a spatter of blood. He tried to laugh again, but ended up choking on his own crimson stain.

He weakly raised the weapon, dangling it before his eyes.

"Look at this machete. It’s survived so many battles with me, and I’m still holding on. So tell me... why would I leave behind a girl who’s ready to sacrifice her entire life for me?"

Mylo’s eyes softened, a gentle smile tugging at the corner of his lips.

"There’s no question about it," he groaned, slamming his palm against his paralyzed leg. Ignoring the agonizing screams of his nerves, he forced his trembling body to stand.

"Leaving her behind is completely out of the question. That girl deserves a beautiful life, a life as bright as she is shining right now, no, even brighter. And I’m going to make sure she gets it."

Is that just another one of your pathetic excuses to keep living?

"Maybe," Mylo muttered softly, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "Honestly, it’s exhausting to constantly worry about the meaning of life and grand goals anyway."

Closing his eyes, he began his inner chant, repeating it like a dark mantra:

Sensory numb... sensory numb... sensory numb... sensory numb... sensory numb... sensory numb...sensory numb... sensory numb... sensory numb... sensory numb...

The excruciating pain dulled into a distant, muted throb. Catching his breath, Mylo looked back at his older self and smiled.

"For now, I’ll just push all those heavy thoughts out of my mind. I’m going to aim for a good life with the people I love. I’ll make sure they get the warmest, brightest future they deserve... and in return, I’ll just ask for a small corner in that life."

So you’re just going to leech off someone else’s journey and steal their moments?

You’ll always be an arrogant thief with nothing of your own.

"Well... for me, that’s more than enough."

Not for me. It will never be enough for me!

With a final glare, the image vanished into the smoke. Mylo didn’t drop his smile for a single second.

Maybe I really have gone insane.

The battlefield echoed with Tritia’s fierce, wild voice as she launched herself into the air above the titan.

Taking a deep, shuddering breath, Mylo punched his numb legs a few times to force circulation, then broke into a reckless, wild dash.

Throwing every ounce of remaining strength into his stride, he vaulted over crushed debris and shattered tree trunks, closing the distance to the base of the monster.

Seeing Grimara’s colossal size, he adjusted his path, circling around its flank.

He scrambled up a fallen tree and leaped onto a heavy, broken branch. The thick wood bent dangerously under his weight.

Gathering all the momentum in his legs, Mylo unleashed a deafening scream that filled the entire clearing and launched himself upward using the branch’s elasticity.

He slammed onto the monster’s massive thigh, used the impact to kick off a second time, and shot straight into the air, placing his own chest directly in the path of the surging red beam of light.

’’AGHHH!’’

"Wh-Mylo?!"

Tritia’s stunned scream cut through the air.

"What are you doing?!"

Mylo simply looked at her and smiled.

In that frozen fraction of a second, the world seemed to stop.

Their hearts ceased beating for a single pulse, and then struck again, beating together in perfect, synchronized rhythm.

Tritia’s wide, trembling eyes reflected Mylo’s face.

Then, a massive shadow blotted out the sky above them.

’’Agh!!!’’

Grimara’s colossal fist struck Mylo squarely in the back, driving his body straight into Tritia.

The tremendous impact crushed them together, sending both of their bodies flying through the air before slamming them deep through the forest, into the earth meters away.

Tritia coughed violently, a spray of dark blood spilling onto the earth as her whole body throbbed with unbearable agony. Her eyelids fluttered, straining against the darkness, until her vision finally settled on the figure in front of her.

Mylo stood there, drenched in his own blood.

Tritia stared at him, first in stunned confusion, which quickly twisted as her slammed rapidly in her chest. She pressed both hands tightly against her chest, her breath catching in her throat.

’’Mylo... Mylo...! W-We actually formed the Matebind!’’ She whispered, her voice trembling afterwards.

"No... no, why?! You could have died!"

"You’re asking that as if you didn’t just try to kill yourself," Mylo replied with a faint smile.’’When I heard you say about balance, I was more or less sure we would form it.’’

He dusted off his torn clothes and cracked his neck, wincing as he tested his bruised shoulders.

"No, but, this is different! Yours-"

"There is no difference, Tritia," Mylo interrupted softly, his voice firm. "There’s no difference at all."

He turned his gaze toward the roaring titan in the distance.

Sensory numb... sensory numb... sensory numb... sensory numb... sensory numb... sensory numb... sensory numb... sensory numb... sensory numb...sensory numb...

[Pran(1)]

Walking back to Tritia, Mylo extended his right arm, his skin painted in a crude mix of dried blood and dirt.

"Let’s go take care of him. Together this time."

Tritia’s eyes sparkled, widening in wonder. Her mouth gaped open in disbelief, her charred, cracked lips instantly sealing shut as a brilliant crimson light flushed through her skin, turning them into glossy red, her wounds healed partially. Closing her mouth, a sudden realization struck her:

Ah... we really formed it. The Matebind.

A radiant smile broke across her face. She reached up and took his hand tightly.

"Yes. Let’s do it together!"

Using his frame for support, she pulled herself up. She extended her free hand toward the dirt, aiming at the fallen Tkern antler lying nearby. Her vivid crimson aura flared brightly, and as if answering her call, the antler lifted off the ground, flying straight into her palm.

The surrounding air instantly filled with an undeniable sense of raw devotion as Tritia closed her eyes and began to chant:

’’I call Devotion alive, answer my call using my pran; I fill this first spell of mine with devotion, trust and love; mold in the shape you desire, I accept every part of you as my heir.’’

As her chant concluded, the antler, which previously bore only a single central spike, glowed soft and warm. She held it out to Mylo.

"A gift from me... for our ritual."
