Achieving Demon Godhood from Unlocking Talents
Chapter 171 - 119: Inner Court ProvocationNight.
After a quick shower.
Lu Chao changed into a clean gray hoodie and jeans, slung a messenger bag over his shoulder, and walked out of the training hall.
Thanks to the medicinal soak, the searing pain in his muscles and bones had mostly faded.
’It’s just...’
"There are fewer and fewer people."
He glanced back at the lights behind him. In the past, even at night, there were always a few dedicated figures still training in the hall.
But now...
the sounds of activity were becoming scarce, with only a few people left.
Jinshi Boxing Hall was right back to how it had been when he first joined.
According to Zheng Wu, new student sign-ups over the past month had even plummeted, falling below the numbers from before the martial arts tournament.
"Thunder Extreme Martial Arts Hall..."
Averting his gaze, Lu Chao passed through the iron gate and left the boxing hall.
There were less than twenty days until the challenge match.
After joining the punitive force, Thunder Extreme Martial Arts Hall’s reputation had soared. They had deliberately publicized the upcoming challenge, even getting it featured in the Ring Daily, which attracted considerable attention.
In the past two days, reporters had even come to the boxing hall, ostensibly for a pre-match interview, but their words made it clear they didn’t favor Jinshi’s chances.
As he thought of this, a glint flashed in Lu Chao’s eyes, but his heart remained calm.
He walked without pause toward a nearby platform.
"Hm?"
Suddenly, his gaze shifted.
He looked across the street from the boxing hall’s entrance, where a black Sai Wei sedan was parked by the curb.
A girl in a long black dress and light makeup, a short shawl draped over her shoulders, stood by the road. She leaned slightly against the car, lighting a slender white cigarette.
"Brother Xiaochao."
She didn’t look away, calling out to him softly. On her head, she wore a ladies’ formal hat adorned with a white flower.
"Song Yuhan?"
Lu Chao was a little surprised. ’What is she doing here?’
Puzzled, he glanced around.
She was actually alone today, without the two fighter-bodyguards he’d seen with her last time.
"It’s just me today."
As if sensing his confusion, Song Yuhan smiled.
Lu Chao’s gaze fell on the slender white cigarette in her hand, lingering for a moment.
"Sometimes I can’t sleep at night. Smoking one or two helps a lot."
She dropped the cigarette and offered the explanation before changing the subject.
"Brother Xiaochao, would you have time to have a meal with me?"
Song Yuhan extended the invitation. Her features were bright and captivating, and her deliberately chosen outfit made her figure look enchanting.
But...
"I’m sorry, I have something to do."
Lu Chao shook his head, politely refusing.
Because of the incident with Peng Zhao Hui, he had no intention of getting too involved with her.
Song Yuhan’s expression stiffened at his words, but she then nodded lightly and forced a smile. "Right. Brother Xiaochao must be very busy right now."
The atmosphere grew quiet as they both fell silent.
The roadside lamps flickered faintly. Lu Chao could tell she hadn’t come looking for him for a simple reason.
"Peng Zhao Hui sent you, didn’t he?"
He asked, breaking the silence, his thoughts drifting to that day at Dreamfire Bar.
Hearing this, Song Yuhan gave a bitter smile and nodded. "I knew I couldn’t hide it from you, Brother Xiaochao."
"He wanted me to deliver a message..."
She explained briefly.
It was nothing more than that Li Yacheng had been dealt with, and that the provocation at the bar that day had nothing to do with the Hongyi Society.
To that end, Peng Zhao Hui had even booked a private room at Fuman Building, hoping Lu Chao would do him the honor of joining him for a casual meal tomorrow so his subordinate could offer a formal apology.
Oh?
Lu Chao raised an eyebrow.
’It seems like a thorough courtesy, a gesture of goodwill.’
But he inwardly shook his head.
’This Peng Zhao Hui is the type to treat people according to their status.’
’He’s only bringing this up so many days later. If I hadn’t been promoted to squad leader, this would probably be a very different conversation.’
’He might have even tried to make a move on me to force Brother Hao to back down.’
"I appreciate the thought, but I’ll pass on the meal."
His expression calm, Lu Chao refused once more.
He knew Song Yuhan was just the messenger and didn’t take his anger out on her, nor did he want to make things difficult for her.
However...
"Yuhan, I know you’re in a tough spot."
"But I hope you haven’t forgotten that Brother Hao helped you once, too," he said seriously.
Whatever lifestyle Song Yuhan chose was none of his business, but anyone with eyes could see that Peng Zhao Hui and Brother Hao were at odds.
So, he hoped she wouldn’t, at the very least, aid a villain and do something so disheartening.
Song Yuhan lowered her head slightly, her thoughts unreadable.
Just as Lu Chao was about to walk away,
"Brother Xiaochao."
Song Yuhan suddenly spoke up, looking at him with a complicated expression.
"Sometimes, I don’t have a choice."
she said bitterly. The forced smile had long since vanished, and beneath her exquisite makeup, her eyes were bleak.
Without answering, Lu Chao shook his head and walked on, brushing past her.
In the dark street, only the dim yellow glow of the streetlights shone down. The sound of his footsteps seemed to tread upon the heart, an interrogation of the soul.
Song Yuhan’s expression was complex as she stood rooted to the spot, staring at the long, lonely shadow stretching out before her.
She seemed to be wrestling with something.
Finally, she couldn’t help but turn and look at his departing back.
"Brother Xiaochao, I heard about what’s happening with the boxing hall."
"Thunder Extreme Martial Arts Hall is clearly trying to crush Jinshi Boxing Hall completely. You’ve worked so hard to finally make a name for yourself in the Patrol Department. Are you really going to get involved in this?"
She asked, turning around. A strange hint of hope had entered her tone, as if she were seeking confirmation of something.
She had already heard about this from Peng Zhao Hui, who was almost certain that Jinshi Boxing Hall’s time was over and that it would be trampled underfoot by Thunder Extreme Martial Arts Hall.
His footsteps stopped short. Lu Chao turned his head slightly and glanced at her.
After a brief silence.
"Some principles are more important than temporary gains or losses."
he replied frankly. His figure stood tall and straight, as if holding back the darkness of the alley in the night.
Song Yuhan was momentarily lost in a daze.
Then, she watched as he turned away again, his tall, straight back gradually disappearing from sight.
