By the time Aaron replaced the string on his bow for the third time, Highcrest had stopped feeling like a city he was visiting and started behaving like somewhere that expected him back. The guards at the northern gate knew Jenna by sight, the armourer near the western market kept a space clear for whichever part of Miles's equipment had been damaged most recently, and Priya had accumulated enough books at the hostel that the owner threatened to start charging the shelves rent.
Aaron's own routine had become difficult to separate from the city around it. He spent mornings outside the walls whenever contracts allowed, returned with whatever maps or monster parts their work produced, and usually ended the day at the guild copying trail information while Jenna argued with professional scouts about whether a stream crossing had moved or somebody had drawn it incorrectly the first time.
The weeks after the Timbermaw hunt were busier than anything they had experienced around Larkhaven. Highcrest sat at the meeting point of too many roads to remain quiet for long, and every caravan brought more Outsiders, more rumours and another collection of names people insisted were worth remembering.
Damon Grey remained at the top of most conversations, although the distance between him and everyone else had begun narrowing. He reached Level 25 during a four-day expedition into the northern hills, returned with another ruined sword and spent less than two days inside the walls before Grey Banner left again.
A woman named Sera Holt reached Level 23 soon afterward.
Aaron first heard about her while collecting payment for a contract involving marsh drakes. Two guild clerks were discussing an expedition south of the river, where Sera's six-person party had cleared an old watchfort occupied by Level 16 and 17 creatures without losing anyone.
She was a Mage.
That detail interested Priya enough that they went looking for the battle report that evening.
Sera had begun as an Apprentice Mage, advanced into an Elementalist — Rare at Level 10 and built most of her fighting around wind and lightning. Her group called themselves Gale Company, although nearly everyone in Highcrest simply referred to them by Sera's name.
Priya copied the report into her notebook while Aaron read over her shoulder. "She used wind to keep the drakes from landing properly and let the rest of her group kill them on the ground," she said, tracing the diagram another scout had included. "I thought she was just throwing lightning at everything."
"Apparently she also throws things at the ground first."
Priya glanced at him. "That's a lot more useful."
Miles found his own person to follow several days later.
Ronan Vale had reached Level 22 as a Bulwark — Rare, and unlike Damon, he fought almost entirely with a tower shield and short spear. A training demonstration outside the central guild drew so many people that Aaron's group ended up standing on a wagon to see over the crowd.
Ronan was enormous even without armour. He planted a shield nearly as tall as Priya into the ground, invited three Warriors to move him and remained in place while they exhausted themselves trying.
Miles watched with the concentration he normally reserved for expensive equipment.
When Ronan finally began explaining how he distributed impacts through his legs and hips instead of allowing the shield to absorb everything, Miles stopped leaning on Aaron's shoulder and climbed off the wagon before the demonstration had even finished.
Aaron saw very little of him for the next two days.
Miles returned with bruises across both forearms and several pages of notes written so badly that Priya refused to believe they were words. He had also changed the way he stood behind his shield, lowering his centre of gravity without sacrificing the forward movement he had been developing since Larkhaven.
Jenna's interest went elsewhere.
The name she kept hearing belonged to Celia Ward, a Level 20 Pathfinder — Rare who spent more time outside Highcrest than inside it. Celia's parties had mapped two routes through the western ridges, discovered an abandoned mining settlement and located a pass that cut almost a full day from journeys toward the southern valleys.
Jenna found one of her maps in a guild archive.
Aaron lost her for nearly three hours.
When she returned, she had copied so many notes into the margins of her own map that several roads disappeared beneath the handwriting. Celia apparently marked wind direction, water depth, animal trails, seasonal mud and locations where trees had fallen badly enough to obstruct wagons.
"She maps where the ground changes after rain," Jenna said while spreading both sheets across their dinner table. "Look at this section. The road isn't dangerous most of the year, but there are two slopes where runoff brings loose stone across it every spring."
Miles tried moving his bowl away from the ink.
Jenna used the empty space immediately.
Aaron's own attention remained less focused on any single person.
Rangers rarely appeared among the most discussed names.
Some existed.
A man called Tariq Bell had reached Level 19 as a Huntsman — Rare and led several successful monster hunts east of Highcrest. Another Ranger, Elise Tran, worked almost entirely with merchants and had become one of the best-paid caravan escorts travelling the northern road.
Aaron read whatever reports he could find about both.
Then he went back outside.
His own level rose during work that felt increasingly removed from the small contracts they had once taken around Larkhaven.
Level 9 became 10 during a five-day survey expedition beyond the western ridges.
Their assignment had begun with a missing bridge.
Heavy rain had torn through a narrow gorge and carried half the structure downstream, leaving three merchant routes dependent on a crossing that could no longer support wagons. Aaron's group travelled with two engineers, six guards and another scouting pair to find a temporary route before the next caravan arrived.
The work kept them outside for four nights.
They crossed the gorge twice, followed an old animal trail along the northern bank and eventually found a section where the stone walls widened enough to build a temporary ramp. The same valley held a colony of Level 8 cliff lizards that repeatedly stole food from their camp until Miles caught one trying to drag an entire cooking pot into a crack in the rocks.
Aaron reached Level 10 while helping Jenna clear the creatures away from the engineers.
The notification appeared near sunset after a final group fled across the upper rocks. Aaron dismissed it until they returned to camp, where the engineers were already arguing over timber lengths and Priya was trying to clean soot from the bottom of the recovered cooking pot.
He sat beside the fire and opened the advancement.
His original Ranger class had carried him farther than he expected.
The new choices spread across hunting, scouting and ranged combat without reaching anything beyond Rare.
Longbow Ranger — Uncommon
Deepens ranged combat through distance control, powerful bow techniques and improved stability with heavier bows.
Trail Ranger — Uncommon
Develops tracking, wilderness movement, navigation and extended travel through difficult terrain.
Beast Hunter — Uncommon
Develops the pursuit, study and elimination of dangerous creatures through tracking, preparation and targeted attacks.
Scout Archer — Uncommon
Combines ranged combat with reconnaissance, stealth and rapid repositioning across uncertain terrain.
Huntsman — Rare
Develops advanced tracking, ranged hunting and the study of creature behaviour, rewarding preparation and precise exploitation of physical weaknesses.
Farstrider — Rare
Develops exceptional wilderness mobility, endurance, navigation and long-range reconnaissance across unfamiliar territory.
Warden Ranger — Rare
Develops a balanced foundation in ranged combat, field survival, territorial awareness and protection of companions across extended engagements.
Greyeye — Rare
Deepens visual perception, target reading, distance estimation and the identification of subtle movement or structural weaknesses at range.
Aaron spent most of the evening moving between four of them.
Huntsman worked well with the monster tracking he had already been doing around Highcrest. Greyeye strengthened the part of Ranger he relied on most often, while Farstrider appealed to the growing amount of time his group spent beyond mapped roads.
Warden Ranger remained open longest.
Its description was broad enough to support almost everything Aaron actually did.
He tracked with Jenna.
He fought at range.

He watched approaches while Miles held the centre.
He covered Priya when fights became chaotic.
He spent more time protecting space around other people than pursuing kills.
The class settled comfortably alongside the habits he had developed without asking him to discard any of them.
Aaron selected it.
Class Advancement Complete
Warden Ranger — Rare
Essence moved through his body in a slow wave that began behind his eyes and spread through his shoulders, arms and legs. The sensation lasted several minutes, leaving the world around the camp sharper when it faded.
Priya noticed the interface light disappear from his eyes while she scraped the cooking pot with a knife. She asked what he had chosen, and Aaron explained the options while Miles listened from where he was repairing a strap on his shield.
"Warden Ranger fits," Miles said once Aaron finished. "You're already the one yelling whenever something tries coming around the side."
Aaron leaned back against his pack. "Jenna yells more."
"Jenna is usually the reason we know something is coming."
From the darkness beyond the fire, Jenna called that both statements were true.
Her own advancement came the following morning.
Jenna reached Level 10 after finding a route around a landslide that had blocked the old northern path. The engineers had already started preparing to turn back when she disappeared into the trees and returned nearly an hour later covered in mud with a second trail marked across her map.
She chose Pathfinder — Rare before lunch.
Nobody was surprised.
Priya reached Level 10 two days after they returned to Highcrest.
Her advancement took longer.
The archive became involved.
So did two instructors from the restoration hall and one mage she had been learning cultivation from.
Aaron saw almost none of her for an entire afternoon before she finally returned to the hostel carrying the same notebook she had brought with her that morning.
She opened it at the dinner table.
"I had seven choices."
Miles moved his plate before Jenna could put another map beside it.
Priya described them while eating.
Several developed Ember Dart and her other offensive spells more directly, including Flame Adept — Uncommon and Battle Mage — Rare. Essence Scholar — Rare focused on magical study and spell construction, while Restoration Apprentice — Uncommon followed the healing techniques she had started learning.
She chose Flow Mage — Rare.
The class developed Essence control, spell shaping and the movement of power through different magical structures without forcing her into one element.
Aaron understood the choice before she finished explaining it.
Priya had spent weeks filling notebooks with questions about why spells changed when she altered timing, concentration or movement. Her first instinct after learning cultivation had been to test whether the Essence she drew behaved differently from what recovered naturally.
Flow Mage gave her more room to continue doing that.
Miles reached Level 10 last.
He complained about this constantly until it happened during a caravan defence east of Highcrest.
A Level 11 Horned Grazer had panicked after being attacked by predators and charged directly through the road. Miles planted himself in front of the lead wagon long enough for the driver to turn the horses away, taking the collision across his shield and sliding several metres through the dirt before the rest of the party drove the creature aside.
His advancement appeared before he finished swearing about the damage to his boots.
Miles chose Bulwark — Rare that evening.
Ronan Vale's influence was obvious.
The advancement strengthened defensive positioning, physical stability, interception and shield use without preventing Miles from maintaining the aggressive movement he had been building since his first contracts.
Their party entered Highcrest the next afternoon with four advanced classes.
The guild clerk who processed their caravan report knew all of their names.
Aaron noticed because she did not ask for them.
She simply pulled their file from beneath the desk and started recording what had happened.
"Three damaged wagons?" she asked.
"Two," Jenna corrected. "The third only lost the canvas."
The clerk scratched out a line. "Any civilian injuries?"
"One broken wrist and a cut across the driver's shoulder," Priya said. "Both were treated before we reached the gate."
The clerk finished the report and slid their payment across the desk.
Before Aaron could collect it, she added another folded request on top.
"Central guild asked whether your party is available tomorrow."
Aaron opened it.
The contract involved a missing survey team west of the city.
"They asked for us?"
"The western scouts recommended Jenna, and somebody from the restoration hall asked for Priya. Your names were already together in the party registry, so the guild kept it that way."
Miles took the page from Aaron.
The requested level range began at 9.
He read the rest before handing it back.
They accepted.
More requests followed.
Highcrest had enough Outsiders now that guild clerks could afford to choose parties instead of simply posting everything on a board and waiting.
Aaron's group began receiving work suited to what people knew they could do.
Missing travellers.
Long-distance surveys.
Monster movements near trade routes.
Caravan escorts through places where maps remained unreliable.
Contracts where survival depended more on spotting trouble early than killing everything encountered.
Their levels continued rising.
Aaron reached 11 in the western forest after tracking a wounded courier through nearly twelve kilometres of rain.
Jenna reached 12 first after mapping a network of caves discovered beneath an abandoned quarry.
Miles reached 11 during a defensive contract at a riverside village, while Priya followed several days later after spending two nights helping local healers during an outbreak of fever.
The names above them climbed faster.
Damon reached 29.
Sera Holt reached 27.
Ronan Vale reached 25.
Celia Ward remained at 23 for almost two weeks because she had disappeared west on another mapping expedition, then returned at Level 26 with three new routes and news of a settlement Highcrest had never traded with directly.
Other people appeared between them.
A Duelist named Kaito Bren reached Level 24 after winning a series of monster-hunting contests organised by Red Path.
Lena Morris, a Level 22 Field Priest — Rare, became known after keeping fourteen injured fighters alive during a failed dungeon expedition south of Highcrest.
Tariq Bell reached 23 and began taking contracts against creatures that ordinary parties refused to approach.
The central guild eventually replaced one of its smaller wall boards with a larger one.
The new board listed active Outsider parties, confirmed levels, specialisations and availability for joint contracts. Nobody was required to submit information, but enough groups participated that the board became crowded within days.
Grey Banner occupied an entire section.
Gale Company had another.
Ronan's group appeared beneath them.
Aaron found his own party halfway down the second column.
Aaron Vale — Warden Ranger — Level 12
Jenna Walsh — Pathfinder — Level 12
Priya Desai — Flow Mage — Level 11
Miles Carter — Bulwark — Level 11
Registered Party: Northbound
Aaron disliked the name immediately.
Jenna had submitted it.
"The guild wanted something to put on the board," she explained when Aaron found her studying a map beneath their new listing. "You weren't there."
"You could have waited."
"You were buying arrows."
Miles joined them carrying a repaired shield. "Northbound is fine."
Priya arrived from the archive several minutes later and agreed with Jenna before Aaron finished objecting.
The name remained.
It spread faster than Aaron expected.
A merchant approached them by it two days later.
A guild officer used it during a morning briefing.
Someone in the hostel asked whether Northbound was taking another Ranger.
Aaron started answering to it.
The work became harder as their reputation improved.
One contract sent them into the western ruins where Celia's maps ended.
Another kept them outside Highcrest for nine days while they escorted healers between settlements dealing with attacks from migrating beasts.
The longest carried them north past the site where the Timbermaw had died and through stretches of forest Aaron recognised only from Jenna's increasingly dense collection of maps.
They began travelling with people who had once seemed impossibly far ahead.
A Level 16 Warrior joined them for a three-day patrol and spent most of the first evening asking Jenna about navigation.
Two Level 14 Rangers followed Aaron's signals during a monster hunt because he had worked that section of forest before.
Priya assisted a Level 18 healer in stabilising a caravan guard whose chest had been crushed beneath a wagon.
Miles found himself directing a defensive line when the person originally leading it broke an arm.
Highcrest continued changing around them.
Outsider shops appeared beside native businesses.
A group of crafters rented an entire warehouse near the southern wall and began producing equipment using materials brought back by player parties.
Guilds bought buildings.
Hostels became permanent residences.
Several Outsiders married themselves to routines that looked less temporary every week, working in kitchens, workshops, libraries or farms rather than leaving the city to hunt monsters.
Questions about Earth remained.
The weekly meetings grew larger rather than smaller.
Information travelled farther now that people regularly moved between settlements, but nobody had found a way home.
Aaron attended when he could.
He listened to reports from places he had never visited and read lists containing hundreds of names he still did not recognise.
The glasses remained the only common thread.
Some devices had come from demonstrations.
Others through friends or relatives.
A few people insisted theirs had arrived by ordinary post despite never requesting them.
Nothing connected the circumstances cleanly enough to produce an answer.
Then Highcrest received its first confirmed report from another major player centre.
The document arrived with a merchant caravan from the southwest.
Nearly fifty Outsiders crowded into the central guild hall while copies were made.
Aaron's group found space near the back.
The city named in the report was Stonegate, more than two weeks away by established roads.
Its Outsider population was larger than Highcrest's.
The highest confirmed level there belonged to a woman named Evelyn Cross.
Level 31.
A murmur moved through the room.
Damon stood near the front with several Grey Banner officers.
He was Level 30 now.
Someone asked Evelyn's class.
The courier checked the report.
"Spellblade. Rare advancement."
Another name followed.
Marcus Reed, Level 29, War Priest — Rare.
Then Hana Seo, Level 28, Shadow Scout — Rare.
Stonegate had guilds of its own.
Its largest contained nearly two hundred Outsiders.
Trade between the two cities had already begun indirectly through native caravans, but the report proposed establishing a regular route that player groups could travel safely.
Highcrest's guild wanted scouts.
Aaron felt Jenna moving beside him before the announcement finished.
He caught her sleeve.
She turned toward him.
"You are not volunteering before we know where the road goes."
Jenna lowered her hand.
"I was only thinking about it."
Aaron had seen enough of her thinking to know what came next.
The meeting continued.
Grey Banner offered support.
Celia Ward volunteered to lead the first mapping team.
Several merchant groups agreed to provide wagons and supplies.
The expedition would not leave immediately.
Two preliminary scouting runs had to happen first.
Aaron's group left the guild nearly an hour later.
Outside, the square had become crowded with discussions about Stonegate.
Some people cared about the route.
Others cared about the levels.
Aaron heard Evelyn Cross's name three times before they reached the market.
Damon's position at the top of Highcrest had never meant he was the strongest person anywhere.
Nobody had known enough of anywhere else to compare.
Now another city had its own names.
Its own guilds.
Its own people who had spent the same weeks surviving, fighting and building lives in Aetheria.
Miles stopped beside a weapons stall where a smith had displayed several new shields.
Priya wanted to return to the guild and copy the Stonegate report.
Jenna had already unfolded the regional map.
Aaron bought another bundle of arrows.
Three days later, Northbound received a request from Celia Ward.
The message asked whether they were willing to join the second preliminary survey toward Stonegate.
Aaron finished chewing before taking the page.
The proposed route ran southwest through territory their maps barely covered, crossed two river systems and passed within a day's travel of several settlements none of them had visited.
The contract estimated twelve days away from Highcrest.
Their recommended level range began at 12.
Aaron was Level 13 now.
Jenna had reached 13 the previous afternoon.
Priya and Miles were both 12.
Celia wanted six scouting parties.
Northbound was one of them.
Aaron read the final section, where the guild had listed expected supplies, known hazards and the locations of two possible resupply points.
Jenna had already started pulling maps from her bag by the time he reached the bottom.
Miles went upstairs to check his armour.
Priya closed the book she had been reading and started making a list of what she needed from the restoration hall.
Aaron folded the contract and put it beside his breakfast.
They had four days before departure.
