Chapter 26: When the Roads Broke

The second survey toward Stonegate lasted eleven days before weather drove them home. By the time Northbound passed beneath Highcrest's western gate again, Aaron had mud dried almost to his knees, Jenna had acquired two new maps and lost one boot in a river crossing, while Miles had spent the final three days carrying a crack through the centre of his shield that widened every time somebody asked whether it was safe.

Priya looked least damaged until she removed her gloves inside the guild and revealed burns across three fingertips. She had spent most of the return journey experimenting with a denser form of Ember Dart that held together better in rain, and the spell had eventually reminded her that improving control did not make heat any less hot when it formed too close to her hand.

Their report occupied two tables.

Celia Ward's first expedition had found the easier southern approach, while the route Northbound helped survey cut directly through a ridge system that could shorten the journey by almost two days if Highcrest repaired an abandoned road running through it. The road itself had been swallowed by forest in several places, but old stone bridges remained intact beneath the vegetation, and enough foundation survived for wagons to pass once workers cleared the worst sections.

Jenna spent most of the afternoon beside Celia combining both expeditions into a single regional map. Aaron stayed long enough to answer questions about water sources and animal movement before leaving her to it, because the guild had already begun discussing a third survey and Jenna's expression suggested she would happily remain there until somebody physically removed the lamps.

Miles went directly to his armourer.

Priya disappeared toward the restoration hall.

Aaron carried their damaged gear to the hostel and slept until evening.

The next morning brought another contract.

Highcrest wanted two Rangers to inspect the old road they had discovered before repair crews entered the ridge. Aaron accepted because Jenna had already volunteered herself for the mapping portion, and the remaining payment was enough to replace the arrows he had lost during the survey.

The road looked different without wagons and thirty people moving along it.

Aaron and Jenna travelled with one native road inspector and a pair of guards, covering in a day what the larger expedition had taken almost twice as long to cross. Once they reached the ridge, the inspector spent hours checking bridge supports while Aaron and Jenna moved through the surrounding woods for signs of anything large enough to make construction dangerous.

They found boar tracks.

A broken den beneath a tree.

Evidence that two Level 10 Ridgecats used the northern slope.

Nothing required fighting.

Near midday, Jenna noticed a stone structure hidden behind a wall of climbing vines.

Aaron remembered seeing part of it during the original survey, although the expedition had been moving quickly enough that nobody investigated beyond confirming it was not occupied. With the road inspector still measuring the bridge below, Aaron followed Jenna uphill and found a narrow square tower built into the ridge.

Half its roof had collapsed.

One wall leaned outward badly enough that Aaron avoided standing beneath it.

The entrance remained open.

Inside, old shelves had rotted against the walls, and rainwater had gathered beneath a hole in the upper floor. A rusted brazier sat beside a narrow staircase leading to what remained of the roof.

Jenna found the first useful object beneath a fallen table.

It was a wooden case with most of the lid split away, containing three bundles of oilcloth, a moulded leather pouch and a book swollen by years of damp.

Aaron opened the driest bundle.

A road map lay inside.

The ink had faded, but the route through the ridge was clear enough to recognise. Several small towers had been marked along it, including the ruin where they stood and four others farther east.

Jenna took the map immediately.

Aaron kept the book.

Most pages stuck together.

The first readable section contained patrol rotations, reports of damaged bridges and complaints about merchants refusing to wait for escorts. Later pages recorded creature movements along the ridge and supply lists for watch posts that no longer existed.

Near the back, a different handwriting appeared.

If the western road is reopened, inspect the ridge posts before sending regular traffic. The old warning line was built because the valleys north of the road funnel migrating beasts directly toward the crossings during early summer. Three bells from the upper posts were enough to give the settlements time to close their roads.

Aaron reread the entry while Jenna studied the older route.

The season outside Highcrest had been warming steadily.

They had seen more creatures moving north during the Stonegate survey.

He turned several pages and found rough sketches of the bell towers.

"Jenna, how many of these posts did we pass?"

She counted markings on the map. "Two that I remember. Maybe three if that broken stone platform near the western bridge was one."

Aaron carried the book outside.

The inspector listened while Aaron explained what they had found, then climbed the hill himself and spent nearly twenty minutes examining the remains of the tower. He knew the old road had once been patrolled, but the current route had fallen out of use before he was born, and nobody in Highcrest had been maintaining warning posts through the ridge for decades.

"We can send this back with the bridge report," he said after reading the surviving entry. "If we're reopening the road, somebody should check the northern valleys before merchants start treating it like a normal route."

Aaron looked toward the forest beyond the ridge.

The trees concealed most of the valley from where they stood.

"Can we get higher?"

The inspector pointed toward the broken roof. "Not on that tower."

Jenna had already unfolded the old map.

"The next post is farther up the ridge."

They reached it before evening.

The second watch post had collapsed almost completely, but its foundation occupied a high shelf of stone overlooking the northern valleys. Aaron climbed the remaining steps until the trees opened below him and stood there for several minutes with Ranger's Eye sharpening the distant movement.

At first he saw nothing beyond forest.

Then a line of birds rose from the valley floor.

Another followed farther east.

Aaron shifted his focus and found animals moving beneath them.

Large groups.

Too distant to identify.

The movement continued long after the first animals disappeared beneath the trees.

Jenna came up beside him carrying the old map. She watched the valley while Aaron compared what he could see against the route recorded in the patrol book.

"If they're following the valley south, they reach the road here." Aaron touched the map near two narrow crossings. "Then the river pushes them east."

"Toward Highcrest?"

"Toward everything between here and Highcrest."

The inspector sent one guard back immediately.

Aaron and Jenna remained on the ridge until sunset, counting movement wherever Ranger's Eye could separate animals from shifting vegetation. The numbers were impossible to confirm at that distance, but enough groups passed through the valley that the inspector abandoned plans to spend another day checking bridge supports.

They returned to Highcrest before noon the following day.

The old book went to the central guild.

The report went farther.

Within hours, scouts were leaving through three gates.

By evening, Celia Ward had taken a mounted team back toward the ridge, while Grey Banner sent people north to check whether the movement extended beyond the old road.

Aaron received a short notification while returning the patrol book to the guild archive.

Warden's Road — Local Quest

The western ridge watch posts once protected travellers and settlements from seasonal beast movement. Assist in restoring the abandoned warning route and identify threats crossing the old road.

Current Progress: 1 / 5 watch posts inspected.

Aaron read it once, then closed the interface.

The quest did not change what the guild was already doing.

He told Jenna about it when he found her near the map room, and she added the remaining watch posts to their route notes before returning to the larger problem.

Two days later, Highcrest closed the western road.

The first herds reached the outer farms the following morning.

They were ordinary animals at the beginning.

Long-legged grazers moved through crop fields in groups of twenty or thirty, ignoring fences whenever those fences happened to stand between them and the direction they were travelling. Farmers drove them away with smoke and noise while guild parties watched for predators following behind.

Then the predators arrived.

Ridgecats came first.

Hookjaws followed.

By the second evening, scouts reported larger creatures moving through the western forest, many of them normally territorial enough that seeing several species travelling in the same direction would have caused alarm by itself.

Highcrest called every available guild party to the central square.

Aaron arrived with Northbound shortly after sunrise.

The crowd filled most of the space between the guild hall and market steps. Grey Banner occupied one side in organised groups, Gale Company gathered near the mages, while smaller parties clustered wherever they could hear the officers speaking from the guild stairs.

Damon stood near the front in new armour.

He had reached Level 33.

Sera Holt was 31.

Ronan Vale had reached 29, while Celia returned from the western ridge during the briefing at Level 30 and covered in enough dust that someone handed her water before asking for the report.

The valley north of the old road was emptying.

Celia placed a map across a standing board while the crowd shifted closer. "Something disturbed the highlands farther northwest. We found broken nests, collapsed dens and tracks from creatures that normally stay much deeper in the mountains."

A guild officer pointed toward the routes leading from the ridge. "How much reaches us?"

"Most of the smaller herds will spread before the city. The larger predators are following them."

Someone farther back asked what counted as larger.

Celia turned the map over to show several sketches recorded by her scouts. "Stonehorns. Greater Ridgecats. Ironmaws. At least two species we couldn't identify from tracks."

Aaron recognised one of the prints.

It was larger than the Timbermaw's.

This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work.

The guild began assigning sectors.

Highcrest's walls could withstand ordinary monsters, but too many farms and settlements lay outside them to simply close the gates and wait. Evacuation wagons had already begun moving families toward the city, while defensive groups were sent to bridges, road junctions and villages likely to receive the first pressure.

Northbound received the western orchard road.

Ronan's group would hold the stone bridge two kilometres south.

Gale Company took the northern farms.

Grey Banner remained mobile around the western approach so Damon could reinforce whichever sector received the strongest creatures.

Aaron's group left before midday.

The orchard road had changed completely from the quiet farmland they remembered.

Wagons crowded toward Highcrest carrying furniture, grain sacks, frightened children and whatever livestock families could manage. Guards kept one side of the road clear for defenders moving outward, while farmers cut fences to open wider routes through the fields.

Northbound joined twenty-three fighters at the orchard junction.

Most were Outsiders between Levels 10 and 18.

The local captain put Aaron and Jenna with the scouts because both already knew the surrounding ground. Miles joined the shield line across the road, while Priya moved between two healer stations behind them.

The first wave arrived before the evacuation finished.

Briarhorn deer burst through the western trees in numbers Aaron had never seen together, their antlers tearing branches apart as they crossed the fields. Nobody attacked them unless they threatened the road, and the defenders spent almost an hour using noise, controlled fire and shield lines to guide the panicked animals south around the junction.

Predators appeared among the final groups.

Level 12 Ridgecats moved through the herd with enough hunger to ignore the people until easier prey disappeared. The first serious fighting spread across the fields when several cats abandoned the deer and rushed the defenders instead.

Aaron's arrows found familiar anatomy.

Jenna called movement from the orchard.

Miles held the road whenever a Ridgecat reached the barricades, while Priya's spells moved between heat and force depending on how close the animals came to the dry trees.

The pressure built gradually.

A second herd followed before the defenders had finished moving injured people from the first attack. Hookjaws ran beside it, then packs of smaller predators Aaron had never seen before.

By evening, the orchard fences had disappeared beneath bodies and trampled earth.

Aaron reached Level 14 without opening the notification.

His shoulders hurt from drawing.

Two fingers on his left hand had begun bleeding beneath his glove.

The supply wagon brought fresh arrows after sunset.

It also brought news from the other sectors.

Gale Company had killed a Level 22 Marsh Drake near the northern farms.

Ronan's bridge was holding.

Grey Banner had already moved twice.

The western ridge continued emptying.

Nobody expected the night to be quiet.

Torches replaced daylight along the road.

The first Stonehorn arrived shortly after midnight.

It crossed the field through a stand of apple trees, knocking trunks aside without slowing until the defenders saw the label above its lowered head.

Stonehorn Grazer

Level 19

Miles's line opened rather than taking the charge.

Archers and mages attacked from both sides, forcing the creature to turn away from the road while shield users kept it from recovering a straight path toward the evacuation wagons.

The fight dragged through the orchard.

Stone plates covered most of the creature's front half, and every attempt to overwhelm it directly ended with someone being thrown aside. Aaron shifted higher onto a storage shed once Jenna found a route to the roof, and from there he could see the narrow gaps behind the shoulder plates whenever the Stonehorn turned.

Three Rangers began using the same angle after Aaron called it.

The concentrated wounds slowed one foreleg.

Miles's group exploited the change, forcing the Stonehorn farther from the road until a spear team reached its exposed side and brought it down among the broken trees.

Aaron climbed off the shed after the fighting moved away.

A woman from the guild handed him another quiver before he reached the barricade.

"You're Aaron Vale?"

He took the arrows. "Yes."

"Captain wants you on the northern roof line. Your group has the longest sight through the orchard."

Aaron found Jenna already moving that way.

Their names had started carrying farther than the Northbound listing.

The next hours blurred into work.

Aaron and Jenna rotated between rooftops, barricades and short scouting runs through the orchard whenever movement disappeared behind the trees. Miles's shield line shifted twice as defenders were injured, and by dawn he was helping direct one side of the junction because the original officer had been taken to Priya with a broken collarbone.

Priya barely left the healer station.

Her Flow Mage advancement had given her more control over how much Essence entered each spell, and the restoration training kept that control useful once wounds began arriving faster than the healers could fully treat them. She stabilised people, handed serious cases to more experienced healers and returned to the next injury until exhaustion forced her to sit for several minutes at a time.

Morning revealed how badly the fields had suffered.

Trampled crops stretched almost to the western tree line.

Smoke rose from controlled burns.

Dead creatures covered the ground around the orchard.

Highcrest's walls remained visible in the distance behind them, still surrounded by wagons moving through the gates.

Another horn sounded from the western scouts.

Aaron looked toward the trees.

The forest moved.

The creature emerging through it carried a ridge of dark stone along its back and shoulders, with heavy forelimbs digging deep furrows into the field each time it stepped. Its head hung low beneath two blunt horns, while smaller creatures scattered from its path.

Cragback Ravager

Level 26

The orchard captain sent a runner toward Grey Banner immediately.

The Ravager reached the first field before help arrived.

Aaron's sector gave ground in organised stages, abandoning the outer barricade and pulling wounded defenders toward the road while ranged fighters concentrated on the creature's face and legs. Most attacks struck stone thick enough to leave shallow marks at best.

Miles helped hold the second line.

The Ravager hit it once and tore the entire barricade apart.

Three defenders went down.

Miles remained upright long enough to drag one person clear before the creature's next movement forced him away.

Aaron fired until his shoulder cramped.

Jenna found a depression running across the southern field where irrigation work had left the ground softer. The line curved toward a stone drainage culvert beside the road.

Aaron followed the terrain and understood what she wanted before she reached him.

"If we can turn it."

"We need something it cares about."

The Ravager answered by charging a cluster of mages.

Sera Holt arrived between one breath and the next.

Wind struck the field hard enough to flatten grass around her, and the Ravager's charge shifted several metres sideways when a compressed blast hit beneath its jaw. Lightning followed across the exposed neck, drawing the creature's attention immediately.

Gale Company spread behind her.

Aaron and Jenna moved.

They reached the soft ground while Sera's group kept the Ravager turning toward repeated attacks from its left side. Northbound's remaining defenders followed once the orchard captain understood the plan, pulling farther south and leaving a clear route toward the irrigation depression.

The Ravager eventually committed to the chase.

Its first foreleg punched through the softened earth.

The second sank deeper.

The creature lurched.

Miles's group hit from the side while mages drove force into the trapped shoulder. Aaron concentrated arrows beneath the jaw where Sera's lightning had already damaged the hide.

The Ravager tore itself free before they could finish it.

Half the drainage bank collapsed beneath its weight.

That exposed the stone culvert.

Aaron saw the opening and shouted for everyone near the front to clear away.

Sera's wind hit the damaged bank.

The culvert roof failed.

Stone and wet soil collapsed beneath the Ravager's rear half, dropping the creature sideways into the channel.

Grey Banner arrived while it was trying to climb out.

Damon went straight for the damaged neck.

The rest of the fight compressed around the trapped creature, with Grey Banner holding its attention while Gale Company and the orchard defenders worked the wounds already opened across its face and shoulder. The Ravager broke one of Damon's swords before Ronan's group arrived from the southern bridge and drove a shield wall against its exposed side.

Aaron stayed on the roof line.

He kept shooting the same damaged place beneath the jaw until he could no longer tell which arrows were his.

The Ravager finally stopped moving shortly after noon.

Nobody celebrated for long.

Another horn sounded from the west.

Then another from the north.

The beast movement had reached every outer sector at once.

Highcrest's defensive line contracted toward the city.

Families from the remaining farms entered through the gates while guild groups abandoned positions too far out to support one another. Northbound fell back with the orchard defenders, reaching the outer wall after almost twenty-four hours of fighting.

Aaron reached Level 15 somewhere during the retreat.

Miles reached 14.

Priya reached 14 while treating the injured inside the gate.

Jenna was already 15.

The city gave them four hours.

Aaron slept for two of them on the floor of a storehouse with his bow beside his arm.

He woke when the western bells began ringing.

The second day became worse.

Creature packs reached the outer walls from three directions.

Highcrest's gates closed except for the eastern entrance, where the final evacuation wagons continued arriving under escort. Fighters occupied rooftops, towers and temporary platforms built behind the walls, while parties rotated through the streets leading to each threatened gate.

Aaron spent most of the afternoon above the western wall.

His new Warden Ranger abilities had developed gradually since Level 10, strengthening his awareness of movement around defended positions and making Ranger's Eye easier to maintain across a wider area. The wall gave him enough height that those improvements mattered more than anything he could have done from the ground.

He called threats.

Marked injured creatures.

Directed archers toward gaps where shield lines were struggling.

Jenna carried information between wall sections whenever runners could not move fast enough through the crowded streets below.

Miles fought near the western gate.

Priya worked inside the nearest treatment hall.

The known names appeared everywhere.

Sera Holt turned part of the northern approach into a field of violent crosswinds that scattered flying creatures before they reached the wall.

Ronan Vale held the eastern gate during the final evacuation, his shield line closing behind wagons while predators struck from both sides.

Celia Ward kept scouts moving between sectors and somehow still found time to update the city map every few hours.

Damon fought wherever the pressure became worst.

Aaron saw him three times that day.

Each time Damon carried a different sword.

By nightfall, the western wall remained intact.

The northern gate had lost one tower.

The southern farms were burning.

The creature movement finally began thinning near dawn on the third day.

Highcrest's defenders had stopped believing every lull by then.

They remained in position while smaller groups emerged from the forest and died against exhausted lines that had already learned where to stand.

Aaron's final serious fight came on the wall.

A Level 18 winged predator landed behind the archers and tore through two people before anyone understood how it had crossed the defensive spells. Aaron abandoned his bow when the creature reached him, used the weapon itself to keep its jaws away from his throat and went down beneath enough weight that his back struck stone.

Jenna hit the creature from the side.

Another Ranger drove a knife beneath its wing.

Aaron recovered his feet while the predator turned between them, caught his bow from the ground and used the few metres of space Jenna created to put an arrow through its mouth.

The body collapsed against the parapet.

Aaron sat beside it because his legs stopped cooperating.

The other Ranger sat with him.

Neither spoke until somebody brought water.

By midday, scouts confirmed the valleys were quieting.

Highcrest opened the eastern gate first.

The western gate followed several hours later.

Defenders moved outside carefully, expecting another rush that never came.

The final tally took most of the evening.

Highcrest had survived.

Three outer villages were heavily damaged.

Two farms had been destroyed almost completely.

Hundreds of creatures lay across the approaches.

The guild had already begun organising recovery crews before the last wounded fighters left the walls.

Aaron found Northbound together inside the central square after sunset.

Miles had a bandage around his head and a replacement shield borrowed from someone whose name he could not remember. Priya looked pale enough that Aaron asked whether she needed a healer, which made her remind him that she had spent most of the last two days surrounded by them.

Jenna sat on the edge of the fountain with one boot off.

Her ankle had swollen badly after she fell from a wall stair during the second night.

Aaron lowered himself beside her.

His interface had collected enough notifications during the fighting that he had ignored almost all of them.

He opened the first.

Level 16 reached.

Another followed.

Warden's Road — Local Quest Updated

Watch Posts Inspected: 1 / 5

Western Migration Warning Delivered: Complete

Reward: Highcrest Warden Reputation increased. Access granted to remaining archived road-watch records.

Aaron read the reward and closed it.

The old tower could wait.

A different notification remained behind it.

This one appeared across the square.

Aaron realised it was not private when conversations stopped around him.

People everywhere were looking at the same thing.

Highcrest Beast Tide — Completed

Highcrest and its surrounding settlements successfully endured the western migration.

10. Aaron Vale

Aaron stared at the final line.

Miles found him on the list at almost the same moment and grabbed his shoulder hard enough to remind Aaron of several bruises he had forgotten.

"You're tenth."

Aaron was still looking higher.

Damon stood near the guild stairs.

Sera was several metres away with Gale Company.

Ronan had entered the square carrying his shield across one shoulder.

None occupied the first three positions.

The crowd reacted slowly.

Someone near the fountain asked whether the concealed names belonged to Grey Banner.

Several Grey Banner members answered immediately that they did not know.

Another person suggested players from one of the outer settlements.

A guild clerk reminded them that every registered Outsider fighter had been accounted for during the defence.

Aaron looked toward Damon.

Damon was speaking with one of his officers while both studied the same ranking.

Priya came closer to Aaron. "Did you see anyone who could have contributed more than them?"

Aaron thought through the three days.

He remembered Sera turning the Ravager.

Ronan holding the eastern gate.

Celia's scouts.

Damon moving between sectors until half the city had probably seen him fight.

He remembered dozens of other people doing smaller things that mattered just as much to whoever had been standing beside them.

He could not place three unknown fighters above everyone.

"Maybe the contribution isn't only kills," Jenna said while pulling her boot back on carefully. "Evacuations, healing, warning routes, supplies, scouting. We don't know what it counted."

That possibility spread through the square once others began saying similar things.

Names were suggested.

Arguments followed.

Someone claimed the first position had to belong to a hidden high-level player.

Another person insisted Highcrest would have noticed anyone that strong.

A healer suggested the rankings included people who had fought at villages outside the walls.

Nobody produced an answer.

The concealed entries remained concealed.

By the time the guild began distributing recovery assignments, most people had other things to do.

Aaron's tenth place created problems of its own.

Three people he barely knew congratulated him before he reached the hostel.

A merchant offered him discounted arrows if Northbound would take a caravan contract after the roads reopened.

The central board was updated the following morning.

Aaron's name had moved from the middle of the party listings to a smaller section near the top.

Notable Highcrest Outsiders

Damon Grey — Iron Vanguard — Level 35

Sera Holt — Elementalist — Level 33

Ronan Vale — Bulwark — Level 31

Celia Ward — Pathfinder — Level 31

Lena Morris — Field Priest — Level 29

Kaito Bren — Duelist — Level 29

Aaron Vale — Warden Ranger — Level 16

Aaron stood in front of the board with a repaired bow across his back while guild workers moved tables around him.

His level looked ridiculous beside the others.

His name remained.

A clerk asked Northbound whether they could help inspect the western road once recovery crews finished clearing the nearest farms.

Aaron accepted.

Jenna wanted to see the remaining watch posts.

Miles needed several days before his shoulder could handle a shield properly.

Priya had been asked to return to the restoration hall after the number of injuries she treated during the defence.

They agreed to leave the following week.

The first three contribution entries stayed hidden.

For several days, Highcrest talked about them constantly.

People searched guild records.

Grey Banner compared rosters.

Someone offered money for reliable information and received enough fabricated stories to abandon the idea.

By the end of the week, rebuilding demanded more attention.

The western gate needed repairs.

Farmers returned to damaged fields.

Merchants wanted the Stonegate route reopened.

Guild parties went back outside.

Aaron spent one afternoon in the archive reading the old Warden patrol records and found the locations of the four remaining watch posts.

One stood north of the ridge.

Another overlooked the river.

The last two followed the old road east toward Highcrest.

He copied them onto Jenna's map.

The next morning, a caravan from Stonegate reached the city carrying mail, equipment and another stack of Outsider reports.

Someone in the guild hall started arguing about whether Evelyn Cross had reached Level 35.

Aaron passed them on his way outside.

He had a road to inspect.
