Chapter 1: Chapter 1: Nest

Late at night, the dilapidated old district was trapped in a deathly silence. Ever since the Alien Species descended half a year ago, Qingjiang City had been classified as a high-risk zone. After dark, not a single soul could be seen on the streets.

Feng Ling carried discounted goods bought just before the convenience store closed, her footsteps light as she navigated the alleys and returned to her old, tube-shaped apartment building.

CLICK.

The sound of the key turning in the lock seemed to startle something. A faint noise echoed from a corner of the apartment as slimy, rotting tentacles writhed in the shadows. Feng Ling ignored it entirely. She entered, flicked on the lights, and walked straight to the refrigerator, systematically storing her newly bought ready-to-eat meals and fruits.

At the very bottom of her shopping bag lay a brand-new boning knife. She tore off its packaging, weighed the blade in her hand, and then looked expressionlessly toward the wooden table against the wall. Strapped to it was a monster that looked somewhat human, yet distinctly not.

To say it looked human was only because one could faintly distinguish arms and legs. To say it didn’t was because it lacked a proper head. Its twitching limbs were spread-eagled and bound to the table. Its abdomen was swollen to a near-purplish red, with dozens of tentacles extending from within. Pus and mucus secreted from it, dripping down the table legs and emitting a nauseating stench. Clearly, this was a dying Alien Species creature.

Feng Ling had unexpectedly found it last week and immediately hauled it home to study. Ever since the Alien Species invaded Earth, the daily news was flooded with reports of them killing humans or being killed. All sorts of information about them flew across the internet, sparking her intense interest in the biology of these creatures.

After studying it for a few days, she discovered this Alien Species was in a very strange state. Every day, it became increasingly decayed, yet it simultaneously exhibited an overly vigorous Life Force. As it rotted, it continuously grew new flesh and blood. It seemed impossible to kill, but it showed absolutely no signs of healing, either.

Perhaps sensing her approach, the monster on the table went from sluggishly writhing to violently struggling. Its putrid tentacles twisted like snakes.

Feng Ling raised the boning knife and plunged it directly into the monster’s abdomen! The towering, swollen belly instantly collapsed. The tentacles thrashed, attempting to counterattack, but they were so terribly rotten that Feng Ling effortlessly shredded them with her blade. Seeing that it had finally settled down, Feng Ling put on plastic gloves, picked up the boning knife again, and began her dissection.

First, she amputated the limbs. Then, she flayed the skin layer embedded with sharp fangs. Next, she cleared away the wet, slimy tentacles, sliced open the putrid, rotting flesh, and opened the abdominal cavity—only to find no internal organs whatsoever.

Piqued with interest, she picked and sorted through the bloody, mangled mess. Finally, in the thoracic cavity, she discovered a fleshy, petal-like fascia. Its overlapping layers slowly opened and closed with each breath, faintly revealing a bloody eyeball wrapped at its very core.

"They all say that the Cards of the Alien Species can give people a superpower. I wonder if the Card is inside here..." Feng Ling muttered to herself. She aimed the tip of the knife at the eyeball and stabbed downward.

Blood gushed out like a spring. The black blood was putrid, while the red was fresh. The blue and purple substances were some unknown mucus. A mixture of these liquids dripped down the table.

Feng Ling pressed down harder.

SQUELCH. The eyeball was completely pierced through.

The monster suddenly jerked straight, then rapidly went limp and decayed, devoid of any further signs of life. Feng Ling paused for a moment. Then, she watched as a Card gradually emerged from the pool of flesh and blood. It was blood-red and slightly transparent, floating silently in midair as if weightless. A single eye was clearly engraved on the face of the Card.

Having read many online forum threads discussing Cards, she felt a bit puzzled. She muttered, "Don’t they all say Cards are silver? Why is it this color?"

She reached out to touch it. The blood-red Card instantly melted, drilling into the pores of her fingertips and vanishing without a trace. At the same time, a clear block of text surfaced in her mind:

[You have obtained the Card: "■:#紝匓※鎷".]

[You are the Origin of Life, you are the Mother of the World. You possess a robust physique and an endless stream of power. As long as a single thread of life remains, it is almost impossible for you to be killed.]

For some reason, the Card’s name displayed as garbled code. Feng Ling was just marveling at the novelty when the text suddenly disintegrated. In its place, several lines of massive red text occupied her entire mind!

[WARNING: Unknown error!]

[WARNING: Unknown error!]

[WARNING: Unknown error!]

The warning alarms made her brain buzz, and the text continuously glitched.

"What’s going on..." Feng Ling pressed her temples in discomfort. Then, the text in her mind shifted once more:

[WARNING! You are not a player.]

[WARNING! The Card’s genes are undergoing an unknown mutation.]

In an instant, tremors echoed through her mind as intense pain violently struck! Every cell in her body began to undergo a drastic transformation.

The bodily reaction caught Feng Ling entirely off guard. She cried out in pain before immediately gritting her teeth. She forced herself to stay upright by gripping the table, her whole body drenched in sweat in a mere ten seconds! A moment later, her bones and muscles flared with agony, as if they were shattering to pieces.

Unable to bear it, she fell to her knees, bracing her hands hard against the floor. Cold sweat poured down her skin, and her vision spun dizzily. The pain was so agonizing that even breathing hurt. Even her heartbeat was a sharp sting. Every nerve and cell in her body was screaming!

After what felt like an eternity, the excruciating pain finally vanished.

Feng Ling looked as though she had just been dragged out of a river. Opening her eyes, she stared at her hands in a daze. There was no visible change, nor did she feel like she possessed any new superpower. The apartment was dead silent. Aside from the puddle of dissolved, rotting monster gore, it was as if nothing had happened.

Feng Ling slowly exhaled and cursed under her breath, "Fucking hurt like hell."

In a dark sewer, a girl wearing a skull mask was stumbling forward when a blue-glowing virtual screen suddenly popped up in front of her.

In a secluded mountain forest, a man dressed as a Daoist set down a bamboo strip, staring at his virtual screen deep in thought.

Inside a city karaoke booth, the music continued to play, yet the guests had eerily fallen completely silent, each of them staring at their own message panels.

At this very moment, all the players who had invaded Earth received the same message simultaneously:

[Hidden Boss Nest (Juvenile Form) has spawned. Danger Level: Unknown. Players are advised to locate the Nest and eliminate it as soon as possible!]
