Chapter 118: Chapter 116: Tumbler
’How am I supposed to kill this thing?’
Since she didn’t know how, she decided to strike first and ask questions later!
During a brief lull when the Spiritual Suppression eased, Feng Ling flung out her Bone Blades once more!
A look of astonishment flashed across the half-human, half-leopard woman’s face. She apparently hadn’t expected her suppression to fail.
Its reaction speed was incredible. Just as Feng Ling’s Bone Blades closed in, its leopard tails, tipped with cone spikes, shot out to intercept them!
CLANG!!!
The piercing sound of hard surfaces colliding grated on her eardrums.
Feng Ling had expected the attack to be blocked. Her expression didn’t change as she forcefully threw the axe in her hand at the exact moment the leopard tails intercepted her blades!
With a THUD, the axe sank straight into the woman’s forehead!
Her head split open in an inverted triangle, like a cracked melon seed. Blood gushed from the wound, drenching the woman’s entire upper body in crimson.
It stared blankly at Feng Ling for two seconds, then raised a hand, gripped the axe handle, and slowly pulled it free.
Feng Ling’s movements slowed as well.
She could feel the Spiritual Suppression returning. Whether it was because Baozi’s ability was insufficient or the Boss had strengthened its spiritual power, the terror was creeping back.
Her heartbeat, her breathing, her strength—everything was changing.
’No, this can’t happen!’
’I have to do something!’
She still had unused grenades in her pouch. Gritting her teeth, she fought to control her right hand, which was beginning to tremble, and pulled one out...
Seeing this, the half-human, half-leopard Leopard Woman retracted her tails, crouched, and leaped, landing swiftly on a nearby granite peak.
It had been hit by explosions a few times before and understood the power of such weapons. Naturally, it wasn’t stupid enough to stay put.
But Feng Ling wouldn’t let it get away. She pulled the pin and threw the grenade without hesitation!
The Leopard Woman leaped nimbly again, landing on another peak even farther away.
The grenade exploded, hitting nothing!
It had to be said that its tiger-and-leopard-like body gave it a massive advantage over Feng Ling in the mountain forest. With just a few leaps, it could easily dodge her attacks and put nearly a hundred meters between them.
Feng Ling suddenly shouted, "Baozi! Open fire!!!"
There were ways to fight at a distance, too. As a bodyguard, Baozi’s marksmanship Skills were far superior to Pei Xianjue’s.
A few shots rang out, and bullets struck the Leopard Woman in the chest and abdomen!
The Leopard Woman roared in pain, the sound like a tiger’s cry.
It didn’t seem to understand how it had been injured and simply assumed Feng Ling was responsible, lunging viciously toward her!
Feng Ling’s hands were empty. Without her axe, she could only rely on her six limbs to defend herself.
However, as the distance between her and the Leopard Woman closed, the Spiritual Suppression intensified once more.
Her every move and reaction grew sluggish. Facing the powerful Maze Master, the Feng Ling of this moment was almost powerless to fight back!
A massive Beast Claw struck, violently flipping her into the air! Excruciating pain, as if her entire spine had snapped, wracked her body. She was thrown onto a steep slope beside the mountain path and began to tumble uncontrollably downward.
Rocks along the way tore at her flesh, and it felt as though the Beast Claw had shattered her internal organs.
Gritting through the pain, Feng Ling used her Teeth and Claws to hook onto a pine tree and struggled to her feet. The moment she looked up, the Leopard Woman lunged, and a cone spike on its tail pierced through her chest in an instant!
Feng Ling’s eyes shot wide as she stared fixedly at the Maze Boss before her.
It gracefully withdrew the cone spike. Despite having the stunningly beautiful face of a human woman, it studied her with an almost bestial gaze, as if assessing an opponent’s strength.
Feng Ling coughed up blood. Her strength drained away, and she sank weakly to her knees...
In its amber eyes, she saw contempt.
It was looking down on her.
A flame of rage ignited in her heart, and the metallic tang of blood between her teeth gave Feng Ling a taste of hatred.
She thought back on her life. It hadn’t been smooth sailing, but she had never been truly defeated. The first lesson she ever learned from Wind Mother was that after falling down, you had to learn to get back up on your own.
Get back up.
Get back up!
Anger brought her vision, which had nearly lost focus, back into sharp clarity.
She saw the Leopard Woman turn to leave, just as the Cat Spider and Cat Owl leaped from some unknown corner, pouncing on the boss simultaneously—
Those two little ones had always been bullies to the weak and cowards to the strong, knowing to fear powerful enemies. But when their Nest was grievously wounded, they would instinctively risk their lives to save her.
The Leopard Woman paid them no mind. It whipped two of its tails like lashes, and between the blows and the Spiritual Suppression, the Cat Spider and Cat Owl were swatted out of the air mid-pounce.
But Feng Ling seized the opportunity, flinging out two of her Teeth and Claws straight at the Leopard Woman!
The Leopard Woman immediately sensed the movement behind it and blocked with the cone spikes on its remaining tails. But Feng Ling’s Bone Blades were lying in wait below. With a sudden slash, they cut off four of the tails!
The Leopard Woman roared in fury!
The tiger-like roar carried a wave of suppression that slammed into Feng Ling, crushing her down once more!
As if venting its rage, it raised its two remaining tails and stabbed them straight toward Feng Ling’s chest!
Feng Ling’s vision went black.
As the Leopard Woman’s bloody cone spikes pierced through her body and were pulled out, blood sprayed like a fountain. The immense pain made her doubt herself for the first time—she suspected she might actually die here.
She couldn’t see anything anymore.
She heard the sound of beast-like feet landing on the ground, growing more distant. The Maze Boss was leaving. Perhaps it thought she was already dead.
A wind seemed to pick up on the mountain, and her body started to feel cold...
After a while, she heard the sound of hurried footsteps, followed by Baozi’s voice. "Feng Ling! Feng Ling! How are you? Feng Ling..."
She coughed up a mouthful of blood as Baozi helped her up by the shoulders.
"Phone..." Feng Ling managed to force out the word.
Baozi quickly took the phone from her pouch. The screen was still on her chat with Pei Xianjue.
"Tell her... hurry... back... to the safe house..." Feng Ling gave a self-deprecating quirk of her lips. "I can’t stop it anymore..."
"Okay, okay! I’ll message her right now!"
Baozi’s hands trembled as he sent the message. "Just hold on," he said. "I’ll carry you back to the safe house!"
...
...
At the summit, flames blazed furiously.
Igniting a towering, ancient tree was no easy task. Not only did its massive canopy shelter all sorts of small monsters, but it also held a great deal of moisture. The damp moss and dew-covered leaves all made Pei Xianjue’s job more difficult.
She had to continuously release her ability just to keep the fire from going out on its own.
Still, in Pei Xianjue’s opinion, their trip had been far too smooth. There had been no Minotaur and no The Queen Mother of the West; she and Huangfu Miaomiao had only encountered a few skeletal spiders.
They hadn’t used any grenades, which would have made too much noise, because they didn’t want to attract the Maze Boss’s attention.
After watching the fire grow so intense that it would no longer be easily extinguished even if she stopped releasing her ability, Pei Xianjue finally stopped and decided to return to the safe house.
Huangfu Miaomiao, who had been scouting the area, hurried back and urged, "No, no! There’s still this tower. We have to burn the tower, too!"
Pei Xianjue paused. "The tower is made of stone. We can’t burn it."
"No, I mean what’s inside the tower..." Half of Huangfu Miaomiao’s face was visible above a dark shadow, her brow tightly furrowed. "I’ve checked. The altar inside is a tree root sticking out of the ground. If we don’t burn it, fruit will grow on it!"
Hearing this, Pei Xianjue moved to the side of the tower’s entrance and peered cautiously inside—
In the gloom, there was no fruit on the wooden altar, but a few fresh, green leaves were sprouting from it, a stark contrast to the scorched branches and leaves outside.
