Alien Species Invasion? I Kill Them Back.
Chapter 119 - 117: Taking the CreditChapter 119: Chapter 117: Taking the Credit
It was impossible to burn a giant tree to death in a short amount of time.
—In the forest, many trees struck by lightning could still sprout new shoots years later because their roots underground still retained their Life Force.
Pei Xianjue had only burned away the branches and leaves, destroying the buds that would have flowered and borne fruit.
Who would have thought there would be a section of root inside the Ancient Tower, with buds growing right on it.
Huangfu Miaomiao was right. If this bulging root wasn’t burned, the fruits would eventually grow back, and possibly even faster than usual.
Because the other branches had been burned away, all the nutrients from the tree’s main root system would be directed here.
Pei Xianjue weighed the pros and cons and lifted her foot, preparing to step into the Ancient Tower.
As she lifted her gaze, she suddenly saw the figure of The Queen Mother of the West!
The foot she had extended froze, then shot back as if shocked. A cold sweat broke out over her body!
"Hurry and come in!" Huangfu Miaomiao encouraged her from inside the Ancient Tower. "It’s just a mural! It’s fine, come on in!"
"A mural..." Pei Xianjue steadied her nerves. Looking closely, she saw that it was indeed a mural, painted on the wall behind the divine altar. The clay idol that was usually enshrined there was gone, revealing the painting.
But the mural depicted The Queen Mother of the West, and Pei Xianjue was truly terrified.
She recalled the first time she and Feng Ling had entered the Ancient Tower, how they were crushed to their knees by an invisible, overwhelming pressure. Every cell in their bodies had instantly stiffened, making it impossible to stand!
That sense of helpless despair still terrified Pei Xianjue to this day.
"Could the mural... have Spiritual Suppression too?" Pei Xianjue couldn’t help but worry. Baozi wasn’t with her. If she were pinned down by spiritual power again, no one would be able to save her.
Huangfu Miaomiao said, "Seriously, it’s just a painting! See? I’m perfectly fine! Now hurry up and get in here to burn it!"
Pei Xianjue wavered. "You’re a Demon. That Daoist said the Demon Card grants some immunity to spiritual attacks."
Huangfu Miaomiao couldn’t stand to hear that. Li Qing was a very sore subject for her now.
Her voice shot up. "You all believe him! But not me! Is that it?!"
Huangfu Miaomiao’s upper body emerged from the Ghost Shadow. She took out her short sword and began hacking at the altar-shaped tree root in front of her, venting her frustration.
"If you won’t burn it, I’ll do it myself!" Huangfu Miaomiao said angrily.
The wood was incredibly hard; the short sword could only leave shallow scratches on the root. The budding points where leaves were sprouting, however, were chopped to bits.
’But could this level of destruction really stop the tree from bearing fruit?’
Pei Xianjue felt her phone vibrate. She was already on edge, and the sudden buzz made her heart leap. She quickly picked it up to check the message.
Feng Ling: Get back to the safe house!
"Feng Ling wants us to go back!" Pei Xianjue panicked. "The Maze Master must be on his way back! We have to go! Now!"
"Damn it..." Huangfu Miaomiao reluctantly retrieved her short sword, her body melting into a black shadow as she quickly left the Ancient Tower.
Pei Xianjue also hurried down the mountain.
There was still some distance between the summit and the safe house. If they couldn’t reach the fork in the road to the Three Pure Ones Palace in time, they would run right into The Queen Mother of the West on the way!
To be precise, the only one who would truly be in danger was Pei Xianjue.
Because Huangfu Miaomiao’s Ghost Shadow form could adapt to any terrain, allowing her to return to the safe house without using the mountain path. Pei Xianjue, however, could not.
A human with no climbing gear would find it impossible to scale the steep, tightly packed peaks of this place.
Pei Xianjue sprinted with all her might, her heart pounding when she noticed the surrounding mist beginning to turn red.
"Miao Miao! Is the Boss here?!" she asked frantically.
Half of Huangfu Miaomiao’s head poked out from a Ghost Shadow by the roadside, her voice tense. "Don’t talk! Just run!"
She was faster than Pei Xianjue and immediately rushed ahead. Seeing the mist turn redder and redder, she knew they were getting closer to the Boss, and her mind was a mess.
’Knowing Feng Ling’s style, something unexpected must have happened. Otherwise, he never would have let the Maze Master get back to the summit.’
Huangfu Miaomiao went back to find Pei Xianjue, urging, "Quick! Give me the grenades! I’ll go buy you some time!"
Before they left, Feng Ling had stuffed quite a few grenades into Pei Xianjue’s bag.
Panting, Pei Xianjue asked, "How many?"
"Quick, just give them to me, don’t worry about how many! The Queen Mother of the West is coming up!" Huangfu Miaomiao was on the verge of screaming, her fear no less than Pei Xianjue’s.
The more flustered Pei Xianjue got, the harder it was to pull the zipper on her bag. In her panic, she ripped the bag open, and all the grenades inside spilled out!
The Ghost Shadow immediately shot out tentacles, catching every single one. Then it scooped up the pile of grenades and charged down the mountain!
Pei Xianjue was almost out of strength, but she didn’t dare stop for even a second. She held her breath and forced herself toward the safe house!
The surrounding mist had turned almost blood-red.
BOOM!
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!!
’The explosions are deafening, which means they’re very close! The Queen Mother of the West is here!’
Sweat stung her eyes, but Pei Xianjue didn’t bother to wipe it away. She saw the corridor leading to the safe house and ran toward it in a state of panicked desperation.
Just as she was about to enter the corridor, a deafening tiger’s roar echoed out! She felt her body plunge into an ice cellar, a chill spreading through her from head to toe!
Pei Xianjue collapsed.
Paralyzed by the immense threat, she trembled uncontrollably.
"Run!!!"
’That’s Huangfu Miaomiao’s voice!’ But how could she run? She couldn’t move at all, like a tiny mouse targeted by a wildcat—frozen stiff, not daring to twitch a muscle.
A sharp pain suddenly shot through her midsection!
She had been pierced by a leopard’s tail and was now dangling in mid-air, dazed—
Another grenade was thrown over. The Leopard Woman roared in anger, dropped Pei Xianjue, and leaped away to evade it.
The grenade landed on a rock by the mountain path, sending shattered stone flying.
Huangfu Miaomiao lunged for Pei Xianjue, using all her strength to drag her toward the corridor! But she wasn’t strong enough and only managed to move her a couple of feet.
As the smoke cleared, the Leopard Woman’s eyes fixed on them again. Huangfu Miaomiao was scared to death, and for a moment, she wanted to abandon Pei Xianjue and flee for her life!
Just then, Li Qing suddenly appeared. He heaved Pei Xianjue over his shoulder and ran for the safe house.
Huangfu Miaomiao was first overjoyed, then furious!
She stormed into the safe house, fuming, and lashed out at Li Qing, "You’re real good at showing up to take the credit!"
Li Qing’s expression was grim. He ignored her and, after setting Pei Xianjue down, immediately found a ripe fruit, peeled off its outer leaves, and crushed the pulp into Pei Xianjue’s mouth.
"The recovery potion, quick!" Li Qing urged.
"You don’t have to tell me!!!" Huangfu Miaomiao yelled, resentful of Li Qing giving orders. She felt incredibly wronged, so angry she was on the verge of tears.
’I tried so hard... why did Li Qing have to be the one to help at the very end?’
Resentfully, she exchanged points for an injector, gave Pei Xianjue the shot, then got up and stormed off—
