Alien Species Invasion? I Kill Them Back.
Chapter 12 - 10: Enthusiastic CitizenChapter 12: Chapter 10: Enthusiastic Citizen
Late at night, the lights of the Supervision Building were still blazing.
Su Yuqing’s upright silhouette was reflected on the glass curtain wall. His face blended into the city’s nightscape, his expression unreadable.
He had just managed to identify the Alien Species that attacked Feng Ling earlier today.
She was a 27-year-old employee of a foreign trade company named Ji Meixin. A month ago, she had quit her job and cut off all contact with her family and friends.
—After an Alien Species takes over a host, they spend the first few days unaccustomed to the human way of life and are unable to handle daily work or social interactions. Quitting their job and cutting all ties were standard operating procedure.
Once he had her identity, Su Yuqing had the technicians track down Ji Meixin’s address. Then, they pulled the surveillance footage from the area to find her.
Once the target’s location was confirmed, the Inspection Bureau could launch an extermination operation tailored to that specific type of Alien Species.
However, he hadn’t expected the technicians to discover three more suspected Alien Species during their search.
Alien Species had all sorts of strange abilities. Dealing with just one was difficult enough. Now, a group of them had appeared, posing a massive threat to the city’s security.
Su Yuqing immediately called his superiors to report the matter and request reinforcements.
The reply he received, however, was: "We’ll discuss it further at the meeting tomorrow."
He recognized the unspoken refusal, hanging up the phone with a heavy heart. He stood in his office, lost in thought for a long time...
His prolonged silence made his assistant uneasy. "Captain," the assistant asked in a low voice, "has... has Qingjiang City been abandoned?"
Su Yuqing glanced up at his assistant. "Why would you think that?"
The assistant’s eyes betrayed his simmering dissatisfaction. "Every time we find an Alien Species, the higher-ups never send reinforcements. But whenever we recruit a new Inspector, they get transferred away within a month. Captain Su, this Supervision Building might look impressive from the outside, but it’s just an empty shell. Shouldn’t we report this to them? We can’t just rely on you and Captain Zhou to bear the brunt every time something happens. There are more and more Alien Species. Sooner or later... sooner or later, we won’t be able to hold out."
"How is it an empty shell?" Su Yuqing’s gaze grew cold. "While Zhou Diao and I are the only Inspectors, we have ample firepower, excellent combat personnel, and collaborative departments like medical and logistics. As long as we create a meticulous operational plan, we can eliminate Alien Species even without any Extraordinary Abilities."
The assistant sighed softly and lowered his head. "But it’s not fair..."
Su Yuqing’s expression softened, a hint of wistfulness in his voice. "It’s not about fairness. Qingjiang City is short-staffed, but so are the Inspection Bureau branches in other places. The priority right now is to make sure those key cities don’t fall into chaos. If they do, the entire country will follow."
After a moment’s thought, he told his assistant, "Call Zhou Diao. Tell him to come here."
"I tried. His phone is off," the assistant replied.
Su Yuqing frowned, picked up his own phone, and dialed another one of Zhou Diao’s private numbers.
The call connected almost immediately. An irate male voice erupted from the other end. "Su Yuqing! I’m going to kill you! Do you know I haven’t slept in three days tracking that Alien Species from Times Square?! I finally got two hours of sleep, and you fucking woke me up!"
"Alien Species spotted in the West Suburban Villa District. I need your support," Su Yuqing stated succinctly.
"Fuck! You find an Alien Species and you can’t deal with it yourselves?! Is the Special Attack Team a bunch of corpses?! Are you expecting me to do all the damn work in Qingjiang City by myself?!"
"Zhou Diao," Su Yuqing said, closing his eyes, his voice heavy. "There are four of them. We’ve found four Alien Species."
The cursing on the other end of the line abruptly stopped.
After a moment of silence, Zhou Diao replied, "I’ll be there in fifteen."
Su Yuqing exhaled. "I’ve already had the technicians monitor all nearby surveillance. You need to probe their abilities, then take them down one by one. The Special Attack Team and snipers will be on standby to assist you..."
Too impatient to listen, Zhou Diao hung up.
"Captain Su! We’ve got something!" A panicked technician burst into the office and placed the laptop in his arms on Su Yuqing’s desk.
"We spotted a suspicious person loitering on the outskirts of the villa district. Captain Su, could this be a fifth Alien Species?!"
On the laptop screen, a small truck slowly drove out of the villa district and parked outside the main gate.
A young woman around twenty years old got out of the truck. She appeared to be injured and limped into the guardhouse.
The surveillance camera caught her face.
Su Yuqing couldn’t help but frown. She looked vaguely familiar. "Magnify the image."
The technician tapped at the keyboard, zooming in on the surveillance footage and running a process to sharpen the pixels.
"She entered the villa district about twenty minutes ago. There’s no surveillance inside the district, so we don’t know what she was doing. It looks like there’s someone in the passenger seat, but we can’t get a clear view."
The West Suburban Villa District was abandoned. Other than a single streetlight outside the main gate, the rest of the area was pitch-black. They were lucky they could make out Feng Ling’s face at all.
Su Yuqing was stunned.
’Why is Feng Ling here? Shouldn’t she be resting in her hospital room right now?’
"Get the eleventh floor on the line. Have them check if Feng Ling is in her room," Su Yuqing ordered.
The assistant immediately made the call. After a brief exchange, his expression turned odd.
He looked at Su Yuqing hesitantly. "...The nurse said Feng Ling discharged herself."
The color drained from Su Yuqing’s face. He snatched the phone from his assistant and demanded, "She was that badly injured! How could you let her leave the hospital? When did she go?!"
The nurse on the other end was startled. "She... she left after two blood transfusions. She looked fine, so we couldn’t really force her to stay."
Su Yuqing frowned. "Did she say where she was going when she left?"
"No... But she did borrow 2,000 from one of the nurses. She said her phone fell into a river and that she’d pay it back as soon as her bonus came through."
Su Yuqing: "..."
’This girl is so reckless!’
’Going off to get revenge the moment she recovers a bit... Does she think she’s invincible?! Even if she has two Cards and is powerful, how much combat experience could she possibly have?!’
’Besides, there are four Alien Species in that villa district!’
’Four!!!’
’No wonder she was injured in the footage. This is the price of being so reckless and impulsive!!!’
’The frustration Su Yuqing felt was indescribable. He’d finally found a promising talent worth nurturing, and before he could even build any trust with her, she’d run off to get herself killed!’
’...Wait a minute.’
Su Yuqing suddenly realized something and looked back at the monitor.
Feng Ling was already back in the truck. The scene on the screen was completely still, with no sign of movement.
’She’s injured, which means she definitely had a direct confrontation with the Alien Species. But she survived, which means... she won?’
’How is that possible???’
Su Yuqing’s mind was a mess. Both his thoughts and his emotions were a tangled knot he couldn’t begin to unravel.
’If killing the Alien Species in Tianshui Park was a moment of quick-wittedness, and fighting one off at the Inspection Bureau was a stroke of incredible luck, then what do you call killing four more less than twenty-four hours later?’
’Is this something any normal person could do?’
’Maybe... the other Alien Species had already left the villa district, and Feng Ling just happened to run into the one that stayed behind.’
’Yes, that has to be it. If she had run into all four of them, there’s no way she would have survived.’
The sound of hurried footsteps echoed from outside.
A pale-faced operator ran into the office. "Captain Su! We got a call from a citizen who claims to have killed three Alien Species in the West Suburban Villa District! D-do I need to contact the Special Attack Team?"
Su Yuqing stared at the operator in disbelief. "What’s the citizen’s name?"
