Chapter 11: Chapter 9: Huangfu Miaomiao

The small pickup truck slowly drove out of the villa district and stopped outside the wrought-iron main gate.

Feng Ling found a landline in the guardhouse, dialed the Alien Species hotline to report the incident, and told them about the fire at the villa.

After hanging up, she returned to the truck to rest.

She had numerous wounds, and the Nest’s powerful Self-healing Ability was gradually stopping the bleeding, but a pervasive pain still tormented her body.

The skeleton girl in the passenger seat, however, was bustling about. One moment, she was pulling out a syringe-like potion and injecting it into her broken arm; the next, she materialized a squeezable Jelly pouch out of thin air and put it in her mouth.

Feng Ling watched her silently out of the corner of her eye. Even through the mask, it wasn’t hard to see the color gradually returning to the girl’s pale skin.

’It seems the potions from the store really work.’

For Feng Ling, however, the information the girl provided was far more valuable.

It had been over half a year since the Alien Species arrived on Earth, and humanity still hadn’t figured much out. Even if there had been any breakthroughs, it was unlikely that someone of Feng Ling’s standing would be privy to them.

And this living, breathing little Alien Species right before her was tantamount to an encyclopedia on the subject. For instance, her earlier comment that "haphazardly absorbing Cards will pollute one’s deck."

Feng Ling’s Pollution Value was already at 7%, making this piece of information crucial.

"What’s your name?" Feng Ling asked her.

The girl took off her skull mask, revealing a fair, pretty face. "My name is Huangfu Miaomiao," she said.

Feng Ling’s lips curved. "That sounds like a human name, doesn’t it?"

Huangfu Miaomiao explained nervously, "Yes. After we log in, every word we say is automatically parsed and converted into your language by the system. So, even if I were to tell you my real name, the system would still translate it as ’Huangfu Miaomiao’."

Feng Ling rested one hand on the steering wheel, her fingers tapping it unconsciously. After a moment of thought, she said, "Then let’s not talk about names. Let’s talk about your Card."

"O-Okay." Huangfu Miaomiao immediately sat up straight, as nervous as if she were at her first job interview.

"The Demon, what kind of Card is it?" Feng Ling asked.

Huangfu Miaomiao replied, "Demon is a High-level Card. Its innate Skill is the ability to form a Demon Contract with any intelligent life-form. Aside from that, it has good night vision and is sensitive to malicious intent... I haven’t absorbed any other Cards, so I don’t have any other Skills for now."

’So weak...’

’It sounded like such a powerful Card, so how could she be this weak?’

Feng Ling thought grimly. If every Alien Species was like Huangfu Miaomiao, with no offensive Skills, the people at the Inspection Bureau wouldn’t be at their wits’ end.

She continued, "Why did that group of Alien Species grab you?"

"Because I posted on the forums looking for a team to enter a Maze..." Huangfu Miaomiao lowered her head, her fingers clutching her mask. "I was too scared to enter a Maze by myself. We had arranged to meet offline, but when I met them, I sensed their malicious intent... I-I got too scared and tried to run, and that’s when they caught me..."

Worried Feng Ling might not understand, Huangfu Miaomiao quickly added, "A Maze is a type of standalone game instance. You can get double points for killing monsters inside a Maze. If you’re lucky enough to find a Maze God Statue, you can even optimize your deck and lower your Pollution Value. That’s why every player wants to enter a Maze."

Feng Ling desperately needed to learn more about "Pollution Value," so she grew interested in the Maze. She asked Huangfu Miaomiao, "Do you know the location of a Maze?"

Huangfu Miaomiao immediately shook her head frantically, terrified that Feng Ling would torture the information out of her like that fat man. "I really don’t know!" she denied hastily. "I only know a small clue... b-but I really don’t know the exact location!"

Feng Ling asked again, "Besides entering a Maze to find a Divine Statue, is there any other way to lower Pollution Value?"

Hearing this, Huangfu Miaomiao’s eyes slowly widened. Then, looking somewhat fearful, she tried to shrink back, pressing herself flat against the passenger-side door.

"Is... is your Pollution Value... high?" Huangfu Miaomiao asked nervously.

Feng Ling raised the corner of her mouth slightly. "What do you consider high?"

"Twenty..." Huangfu Miaomiao swallowed. "Once it passes 20%, there’s a risk of losing control. At 30%, it’s difficult to maintain your sanity; you might develop schizophrenia and experience auditory or visual hallucinations... At 50%, you’re basically a madman, impossible to communicate with. As for 60% or 70%... I’ve never seen it. With that level of pollution, even if you aren’t killed first, your body will contort into all sorts of strange shapes before you drop dead."

If Feng Ling’s Pollution Value was approaching or already over 20%, Huangfu Miaomiao would have to seriously reconsider their cooperation.

She was just looking for a temporary shield, not willing to pay for it with her life!

"You still haven’t answered me," Feng Ling continued in an unhurried tone. "Is there any other way to lower Pollution Value?"

Huangfu Miaomiao instantly sensed a trace of malice—no, it was more like an imperceptible threat. It felt as if her existence would lose all value the very next second if her answer failed to satisfy Feng Ling.

’She couldn’t help but question her choice. Had she picked the wrong person? Weren’t humans supposed to be all about repaying kindness? She might be a player, but... but she had also just indirectly saved Feng Ling’s life.’

Tiny goosebumps erupted on her arms. Huangfu Miaomiao took a deep breath, trying to stay calm, and answered softly,

"Be careful when building your deck... You need to choose which secondary Cards to absorb based on the characteristics of your main Card. The higher the compatibility, the lower the Pollution Value will be. If you make a mistake and choose a Card with low compatibility, a Divine Statue is your only salvation."

Upon hearing this, Feng Ling’s lips curled into a smile, and she let out a chuckle.

This sudden laugh made Huangfu Miaomiao shiver.

She didn’t know that Feng Ling was actually laughing at herself. ’My main Card’s name is a string of garbled text. How am I supposed to find out its characteristics?’

Feng Ling’s only option was to ask the Huangfu Miaomiao in front of her.

’But if I ask, I’ll reveal my ignorance about my own main Card. When that happens, will this little Alien Species get any funny ideas? Will she try to deceive or mislead me?’

’Signing a Demon Contract might be a way to constrain her, but whether it can be signed, and how to do it... I’ll have to research that further.’

"Open your forum," Feng Ling said.

"Huh?... Oh, oh, okay." Huangfu Miaomiao opened the forum panel.

A beautiful blue virtual screen materialized in the air, displaying neatly arranged forum posts, a friends list, and various other function buttons that unfolded one after another.

But in Feng Ling’s field of vision, there was nothing.

Feng Ling said, "Gather all the information on Bosses and Card characteristics."

Huangfu Miaomiao was stunned.

Feng Ling raised an eyebrow slightly, looking at her. "Can’t be done?"

"N-No, it’s not that..." Huangfu Miaomiao stammered in reply. "It’s just that the information is vast and complicated. G-Gathering it all... will take a very long time..."

Feng Ling glanced out the truck window. The night was dark and utterly silent.

She said coolly, "It’s fine. We have plenty of time."
