Chapter 10: Chapter 8: Ghost Jellyfish
Feng Ling walked over and gently touched it.
[You have obtained the Card: "Ghost Jellyfish".]
[Ghost Jellyfish: Becomes transparent upon contact with large amounts of water. Possesses six tentacles lined with stinging cells, with an average length of 10 meters. It boasts excellent piercing power and stealth.]
The Card’s information appeared in Feng Ling’s mind.
A wave of satisfaction washed over her.
’Three Alien Species, all taken care of.’
’Although there were some complications, and I’m a bit of a mess now...’
Feng Ling pressed a hand to her wounds and narrowed her eyes, gazing at the burning villa in the distance. ’There should be two more Cards in there, but unfortunately, I can’t get to them right now. The fire is too intense.’
She slowly walked out of the villa.
Now that things had quieted down, the pain from her various wounds seemed to flare up, several times worse than before. Her left leg, which had been pierced by a tentacle, was dripping with blood.
Feng Ling limped over to her small truck, one step at a time. She had an emergency first-aid kit inside that she’d prepared in advance.
The little girl was there, too. Like a stray dog, she was crouching wretchedly by the truck’s wheel, wearing a cringey skull mask.
"Get lost," Feng Ling frowned.
’I don’t feel like killing it right now.’
’But if it insists on pushing its luck, I don’t mind adding a fourth kill to my tally for the night.’
The little girl flinched and quickly scrambled a few steps to the side. But she didn’t leave, instead standing timidly in the middle of the road, watching Feng Ling.
Feng Ling took the first-aid kit out of the truck, found some disinfectant, and poured it directly onto her wounds.
The disinfectant stung intensely, making every muscle in her body go rigid. Her already foul mood soured even further.
Fortunately, a new message appeared in her mind, momentarily distracting her.
["Ghost Jellyfish" has been digested.]
[Your deck has grown. Pollution Value: 7%.]
[Skill "Mother’s Whip" has been enhanced. You can now manifest two internal appendages that can rapidly transform into sharp Bone Blades. You have also gained the ability to move at high speed and turn transparent.]
Huh?
Feng Ling paused, taken aback.
’I didn’t expect the new Card to enhance my existing Bone Blade ability instead of granting a new Skill.’
’No wonder I had to rename that Skill. The Skills must change based on the main Card’s properties after each new Card is digested.’
"Um..." the little girl at her side began tentatively. "Would you... consider... cooperating with me...?"
Feng Ling looked up at her.
’Has this Alien Species lost its mind? What a ridiculous idea.’
Feng Ling stared at her, her gaze cold. "You’re an Alien Species."
’Humans and Alien Species are mortal enemies. How could we possibly cooperate?’
The little girl mustered her courage. "I can help you..."
That piqued Feng Ling’s interest. She narrowed her eyes. "Oh? And how would you do that?"
"You’re a hidden Boss... The players will try to hunt you down. I-I’m a player! I can tip you off! I can also spread false information among the other players to help you hide your tracks..."
The little girl took a deep breath, her voice growing a little louder as she went on, "For example, if players are forming a party on the forums to hunt a Boss, I can see it and warn you so you can prepare. Only players can see the player forums, and they have tons of information about Bosses on there. Don’t you want to know? And even if you don’t, you’re going to need recovery potions from the shop, right? The medical technology in your world can’t help you in the middle of a fight, but a recovery potion can work in as fast as five seconds! I know you might not believe me... but I... I just want to do my tasks peacefully and earn points... I’ve never killed anyone! If you don’t believe me, I can make a contract with you. I have the Demon Contract Skill—it’s more real and effective than any legal document!"
She rattled it all out in a rush.
Feng Ling mentally filtered through the flood of words, picking out a few intriguing keywords: *player forums, hunting Bosses, shop, tasks, points, Demon Contract*...
’That Demon Contract... no matter how you look at it, it doesn’t sound like a good thing.’
"Demons never lie!" the girl explained, afraid Feng Ling had gotten the wrong idea. "I can show you the terms of the agreement. You’ll see my sincerity once you read it!"
A bright light flashed.
A glowing prompt box appeared before Feng Ling, displaying the following text:
[An injured Demon has invited you to form a contract: She is willing to pay you 50ml of recovery potion daily as remuneration in exchange for your protection. Once the contract is established, neither party may break it. Do you confirm?]
Feng Ling gave the text a quick read, then took a roll of bandages from the first-aid kit and started wrapping her wound.
"I’m not interested in protecting an Alien Species."
’What a preposterous idea. I can barely kill them fast enough; why would I ever protect one?’
The little girl’s face went pale. After a stunned moment, she pleaded with Feng Ling again. "Then... then can I just stay with you? Uh... you don’t have to protect me, just let me be near you... Would that... would that be okay?"
Feng Ling finished wrapping the bandage and tied a knot, remarking lightly, "You’re pretty clever."
The girl’s face lit up. "You agreed?"
’She knows that as long as she stays by my side, any players we encounter will naturally prioritize attacking the hidden Boss. That’s how she’ll get the protection she wants.’
"The contract can wait. I have a few questions for you first," Feng Ling said.
"Okay," the girl replied cooperatively.
"The Cards..." Feng Ling glanced toward the villa. "You just came out of there. You saw them, didn’t you?"
The girl nodded emphatically. "Yes, I saw them."
"Did you take them?" Feng Ling asked.
The little girl froze for a second. "N-no..."
Feng Ling looked directly into the girl’s eyes, her voice slow and deliberate. "You could have taken their Cards. You could have gotten stronger and launched a sneak attack on me while I was injured. If you had, the Cards, the points—they’d all be yours. Why didn’t you do it? Were you afraid?"
The girl trembled. She’d never met a human like Feng Ling, one who could so casually suggest she should have launched a sneak attack. ’What does she mean by this? Is she testing me?’
"My... My main Card is special," the girl answered cautiously. "It’s hard to find compatible Cards. Digesting them randomly will corrupt my deck."
Feng Ling fell silent at her words.
The little girl watched her, not daring to breathe.
After a long moment, perhaps two or three minutes, Feng Ling finally spoke. "Get in the truck."
The little girl froze for a second, then her face lit up with joy. "Th-thank you!"
She scrambled into the back of the truck without a second’s hesitation.
Feng Ling knocked on the side of the truck bed. "Get in the passenger seat."
"Oh! Right, okay..." The little girl scrambled out again, ran around to the other side of the truck, and pulled open the door to get in.
She dutifully fastened her seatbelt, then turned her head. The two tear-streaked eyeholes of her skull mask stared hopefully at Feng Ling.
Feng Ling said nothing, got into the driver’s seat, and started the engine.
’When she wasn’t sure if someone was a threat, she preferred to keep them in her line of sight, not in the truck bed behind her.’
