Chapter 9: Chapter 7: Watch Out

The tongue shot out like lightning. The moment it wrapped around her wrist, it began to pull her toward the bloody maw! It gave Feng Ling almost no time to react!

The Bone Blade swept out!

The tongue was severed. Feng Ling immediately dropped low and dodged behind the monster, on guard in case it spat out a third tongue.

The clumsy monster stood there stunned. Its small, squeezed-together eyes looked left and right, but for a moment, it couldn’t find Feng Ling.

But Feng Ling, too, gasped.

She saw the big-headed monster’s back was covered in layer upon layer of skin folds. Each fold was packed with pustules of varying sizes, so dense that even Feng Ling, who normally had nerves of steel, was completely revolted.

’What the hell is this thing?’

Feng Ling stared at the big-headed monster in disgust. ’Is it some kind of toad?’ she wondered.

If it had just looked like a toad, she wouldn’t have found it so disgusting. The fact that it wore a human guise was what made it so repulsive.

The pustules covering its back quivered as the monster moved, secreting a purplish-green mucus and leaving Feng Ling with no clear way to attack.

Even though this was a perfect opportunity for a sneak attack from behind, she had a strong suspicion that the pustules were filled with acid that would corrode her Bone Blade.

The briefest touch from the monster’s tongue had left a distinct burn on her wrist.

Feng Ling’s gaze shifted downward to the big-headed monster’s thick, short legs. An idea sparked, and a new plan formed—

Adjusting the angle of her Bone Blade, she swept it low along the ground. SWISH! It sliced through the monster’s ankle!

’Once I chop off its legs, I don’t care how corrosive it is. I’ll just set the thing on fire!’

The big-headed monster’s bloated body lost its balance. It howled in pain as it staggered and collapsed.

Just as Feng Ling was about to press her advantage, the pustules on the monster’s back began to shake violently!

Several streams of thick acid shot out. Feng Ling instinctively raised her arm to block and dodged to the side, but she was a step too slow.

A stream of acid grazed past her right arm, and she was instantly struck by an unbearable, searing pain!

Gritting her teeth, she retreated to the other side of the villa. She looked down and saw the spot on her right arm where the acid had hit was already a mangled mess of flesh and blood, exposing the bone beneath.

The acid’s potency was horrifying. It was almost like lava!

Unable to walk, the big-headed monster dragged its flabby body across the ground. A third and then a fourth tongue shot out of its gaping mouth, flicking rapidly through the air as acid sprayed everywhere like a fountain gone haywire.

Her movements severely restricted, Feng Ling grew furious. She circled behind the raging fire and kicked a pile of burning embers at the big-headed monster!

The glowing red embers landed on the monster, still aflame. It finally retracted its tongues and shrieked, "So hot! So hot!"

It shrieked, but there were no visible burns on its body. Instead, the embers were coated in its viscous acid and sputtered out.

’Why won’t it die?!’

A ruthless streak flared up in Feng Ling. She tore down a burning curtain from the villa, flung it over the monster’s head, and then, with her Bone Blade, began stabbing viciously at its body through the fabric!

Her Bone Blade avoided the pustule-covered back, aiming for the head and limbs instead!

After stabbing it more than twenty times, the curtain was almost completely corroded. The head underneath the cloth caved in, and the monster fell still.

Acrid acid and fresh blood gushed from beneath the burning fabric, forming a foul-smelling stream.

Meanwhile, Feng Ling’s Bone Blade was now covered in mottled burns.

Thick smoke filled the air. The firelight illuminated her frosty face as she stared coldly at the Alien Species being consumed by the flames, not daring to let her guard down for even a moment.

No one could be sure it was truly dead until the Card appeared. Besides, there was still another Alien Species in the villa...

Out of the corner of her eye, Feng Ling glanced into the villa at the little girl with the missing arm.

The little girl was huddled by the glass door, apparently hoping to escape in the chaos. But her eyes suddenly met Feng Ling’s, and she shrank back, freezing on the spot, too scared to move.

The scythe on Feng Ling’s shoulder slowly rose...

’Even if she’s just a girl a little over ten, and even if it’s pitiful that she’s missing an arm, she’s still an Alien Species.’

’From the moment it took over a human body, it was a murderer.’

’Her death would be nothing to mourn.’

Besides, the fat one had called her a "Hidden Boss" several times and mentioned that Hidden Bosses were worth a lot of points. Feng Ling wasn’t an idiot. She knew this meant she was special—and she couldn’t let this little Alien Species escape and reveal that information.

She watched the little girl, her own face expressionless. The adrenaline from her fight with the fat monster was wearing off, her heartbeat returning to normal. Faced with such a pathetically weak opponent, she felt a distinct lack of enthusiasm.

Just as she was about to give the girl a quick death, the girl’s pupils suddenly trembled. Her mouth opened and closed. "Be... careful..."

In that instant, alarm bells screamed in Feng Ling’s mind!

She whipped her Bone Blade behind her—SLICE! A nearly transparent tentacle was severed!

But her Bone Blade had only severed one. Five other tentacles had already pierced through her abdomen and left leg!

Her body wracked with pain, Feng Ling followed the eerie, slender tentacles with her eyes and saw the tall, thin man from before. He was crouching on the courtyard wall, staring at her as if facing a powerful foe.

’Why is he back?’

’Did he see the villa was on fire and turn back?’

Feng Ling spat out a mouthful of blood, suspecting her spleen was punctured. But at the same time, that familiar rush of excitement returned.

She stared menacingly at the tall, thin man on the wall, a sinister smile spreading across her lips. Her hands suddenly grabbed the transparent tentacles embedded in her body, and she began to yank them out, hand over fist!

Horror filled the man’s eyes. He spun around, leaped off the wall to flee, and retracted all his tentacles!

The tentacles were barbed, and they flayed the skin from her hands. Gritting her teeth, she chased him out of the villa, saw him leap into another one diagonally across the street, and gave chase—

This villa was unfinished. The yard was full of weeds and gravel, and a few bags of cement and sand were stacked under the eaves.

Feng Ling moved slowly along the courtyard wall, vigilant against a sudden attack.

She followed the wall to the backyard, where she found a swimming pool.

Continuous rain over the past few days had left the pool half-full of water. A few ripples disturbed its surface.

’He’s in the water.’

Feng Ling was certain.

Even though she couldn’t see any sign of him in the dark, murky water, she was sure he was in there, waiting for the right moment to land a fatal blow.

’Heh. A clumsy assassin.’

"Think I can’t do anything to you just because you’re hiding underwater?" Feng Ling murmured, her cold gaze shifting to the nearby bags of cement and sand. The corners of her lips tilted upward.

’If you love hiding in the water so much, you can just stay there!’

Feng Ling dashed forward, grabbed a bag of cement in one hand and a bag of sand in the other, and hurled them toward the pool! Her Bone Blade swept through the air, slicing the bags open mid-flight!

SPLOOSH!

Water splashed everywhere, making the already murky pool even more opaque. But Feng Ling had no intention of stopping. She grabbed two more bags and did the exact same thing.

The Alien Species in the water could not take it any longer. Its transparent tentacles shot out like arrows!

Feng Ling was prepared. She leaped out of the way, taking cover behind a tree and watching the pool.

Wisps of steam began to rise from the surface, followed by bubbles.

Feng Ling paused for a moment. ’Can cement and sand do that?’ Then it hit her. ’One of those bags must have been quicklime.’

SPLASH—

A semi-translucent, humanoid creature burst from the water and painfully dragged itself ashore.

Feng Ling grinned. With a gleeful slash, her Bone Blade sliced diagonally, instantly lopping off the Alien Species’ head!

The headless body began to dissolve like water.

A silver Card emerged from the corpse, shimmering with a strange light in the darkness.
