Chapter 127: Chapter 125: Innocent Player

"Miao Miao, quick, put it away! Stop feeding her!"

Baozi blocked the doorway, nervously watching as foxes appeared everywhere—behind the nearby trees, in the grass, and on the dirt mounds.

Drawn by the fruit’s scent, they gradually closed in on the dilapidated house. They peeked out from their hiding spots, their gazes greedy. There looked to be over twenty of them.

Huangfu Miaomiao had only been thinking about helping Feng Ling recover as quickly as possible, forgetting that the fruit might attract foxes.

She hastily put the fruit away and ran outside. The sight of the foxes’ shadows flustered her for a moment.

"It’s fine, it’s fine, it’s fine... These foxes are weak. I killed a bunch of them the last time I was in the village."

Huangfu Miaomiao was trying to reassure Baozi, but also herself.

But this situation was completely different from the last time.

Last time, she had ambushed the foxes from the shadows with the help of grenades. This time, she and Baozi were the ones surrounded.

Last time, she had Feng Ling watching her back. This time, Feng Ling’s life was hanging by a thread!

Huangfu Miaomiao drew her short sword and took a deep breath. "I... I’ll go kill a few and scare them away!"

With a burst of courage, she transformed into a black Ghost Shadow and shot toward one of the foxes.

The foxes scattered in a flash! They fled so quickly they vanished in an instant!

Huangfu Miaomiao had no choice but to return.

But after a short while, she saw the foxes furtively prowling nearby again.

Baozi sighed. "They’re smart. Even though the scent has faded, they know we have that fruit on us, so they won’t give up."

"So what should we do?" Huangfu Miaomiao asked anxiously.

"All we can do is stand guard here for now," Baozi said. "Feng Ling needs to rest, and it’s best if we don’t let the foxes get close. I’m worried it will interfere with her recovery."

He picked up a broadsword, his imposing frame blocking the doorway of the ruined hut. He said to Huangfu Miaomiao, "You watch the window."

Huangfu Miaomiao had originally gotten three weapons from a treasure box: a short sword, a broadsword, and an axe.

This was the first time Baozi had put the broadsword to use since he’d gotten it.

His Card, Lucky Heaven, was a god of good fortune and wasn’t suited for brandishing weapons. But now, clutching the sword as he guarded the door, he vaguely recalled what it felt like to be a bodyguard.

The two of them stood guard, one at the door, the other at the window.

The foxes craved the fruit’s scent, but they didn’t launch a hasty attack. They just prowled nearby, as if intentionally trying to wear down Huangfu Miaomiao and Baozi’s resolve.

They were like vultures on the savanna, eyeing their wounded prey. They just stared and waited, patiently anticipating the moment the two people in front of the house would let down their guard and reveal an opening.

Gradually, the number of foxes increased, growing from over twenty to more than thirty...

Anxiety gnawed at Huangfu Miaomiao.

She kept glancing back at Feng Ling inside the hut, feeling completely lost. She didn’t know how long they would have to keep this up, and she didn’t dare to imagine what she would do if Feng Ling actually died.

’If I’d known it would turn out like this, I never should have come to this Maze!’

Huangfu Miaomiao thought with bitter regret—

’Why did I even want to come to the Maze? I must have been tricked by the game system, brainwashed by its rules without even realizing it!’

’The game designed 122 Mazes, and for some reason, that made me yearn to enter one. I thought being able to enter a Maze was proof of an outstanding ability!’

’As if entering a Maze would gild me in some way, grant me some kind of honor or status symbol.’

’But why do I need that kind of honor?’

’I obviously despise the game, I hate the rules, and I’m sick of my life being controlled by the system. So why did I still uncontrollably follow the game system’s logic?’

’Why?!’

’On one hand, I hate Li Qing and think he’s the system’s lackey. On the other, I throw myself into the game, feeling proud and happy when I complete a mission and earn points.’

’I’m such a joke!’

—The various negative emotions triggered by Feng Ling’s brush with death surged through her like a tidal wave, leaving Huangfu Miaomiao in a state of anguish and self-reproach.

Her emotions also affected Baozi.

"Miao Miao..." Baozi looked at her with a complicated expression.

Huangfu Miaomiao snapped out of it and looked at Baozi. "Hm?"

"...It’s nothing." Baozi looked away and silently activated one of his Skills, sending a wave of positive and optimistic emotions her way.

Huangfu Miaomiao resumed her watch, her expression serious.

’I guess the true meaning of life is that you can’t always do what you want. Aren’t the working stiffs in this world the same as me? They complain about their bosses and rail against capitalists, but they still obediently show up to work and clock in, don’t they? ...So, I shouldn’t be so hard on myself. I can’t change the world, and I can’t change the rules. It’s not my fault. I’m just an innocent player.’

For some strange reason, a sense of peace washed over Huangfu Miaomiao.

She paused, feeling that something was odd.

But she couldn’t quite put her finger on what it was.

Just then, a faint sound came from inside the hut. She whipped her head around, stunned to see Feng Ling sitting up on her own!

Baozi was shocked as well!

Because it was an utterly bizarre sight!

Feng Ling was sitting up, leaning against the wall. The missing parts of her body were secreting a blood-red, mycelium-like substance. The filaments wrapped around her, layer by layer, until they had formed the complete outline of her torso. Then, from within, bone, flesh, nerves, and blood vessels began to grow—

It was a long process. Huangfu Miaomiao and Baozi watched, transfixed, their breathing slowing, terrified of disturbing Feng Ling’s regeneration.

The newly grown flesh was a raw red. Contrasted with her uninjured skin, her body was now half-red, half-white. The borderline between the two looked like a gruesome red spiderweb, both savage and terrifying.

Feng Ling, however, seemed completely unfazed.

She stood up, rolled her neck, and stretched her arms, flexing her shoulders and neck muscles. Then, she stepped outside—

Huangfu Miaomiao’s first instinct was that her pillar of support was back. She had to tell on them!

She pointed at the foxes outside. "They want to steal our fruit!"

Baozi looked like he wanted to say something but held his tongue. He stared at the gash on Feng Ling’s back that ran from her neck down to her hip bone, a truly shocking sight.

"Rest... rest a little longer..." Baozi said in a low voice.

Feng Ling glanced back at him.

The regeneration had made her eyes bloodshot. Her dark pupils were swimming in a sea of red, making her look terrifying.

Like...

’Like a monster.’

Baozi’s chest tightened. He regretted opening his mouth.

"I’m fine. No need to rest," Feng Ling replied calmly.

Her voice was calm and natural, her emotions stable. There was nothing abnormal about her.

This made Baozi let out a sigh of relief.

Feng Ling held out her hand to Huangfu Miaomiao. "Give me one of the fruits."

Huangfu Miaomiao froze for a second, then took out the same fruit she had fed her earlier.

The moment the purple fruit was exposed to the air, its fresh scent drove the foxes into a frenzy! They couldn’t help but creep closer, watching with insatiable hunger as Feng Ling picked it up...

Feng Ling held the fruit and squeezed lightly, letting the juice trickle between her fingers.

The pack of foxes grew even more agitated. They panted and yelped, scratching at the ground with their claws, unable to hold back. They wanted to lunge forward and snatch the fruit, but they were wary of Feng Ling’s power.

"Listen up. I’m in a hurry," Feng Ling said, looking at the foxes. "As long as you stay out of our way, you can have this fruit. But if you can’t understand me, I’ll just have to kill you all."

With her raw, red arm—the one that hadn’t even grown skin back yet—she threw the fruit out—
