Chapter 140: Chapter 138: Squirrel

"Have you picked a place?" Su Yuqing asked.

"Oh..." Feng Ling snapped out of it and handed the phone back to him. "I’ve picked one."

Su Yuqing glanced at it, the corners of his mouth curving up slightly. "You really know how to pick a spot... I told you to pick somewhere in the city center, and you chose the very heart of it."

The place Feng Ling picked was a famously unfinished building called the Qingjiang Financial Center Building.

The building’s stalled construction had nothing to do with the Alien Species invading Earth; it was purely because the funding chain broke.

Initially, the investors had the grand goal of constructing the nation’s tallest skyscraper. They sank tens of billions into it, claiming the project would elevate Qingjiang City to the ranks of a new first-tier city. But midway through construction, the money ran out, and they skipped town.

The building’s quality and location were both impeccable. The government tried various methods to revitalize it, but the project was simply too large. Once funding was cut, it was difficult to find anyone to take over. Compounded by the negative impact of the Alien Species later on, Qingjiang City’s economy remained in a slump. As a result, the building’s failure was absolute, with little hope of revival.

Feng Ling tilted her head and asked Su Yuqing, "There won’t be any problem with me living here, right?"

Although it was an abandoned project, it involved an investment of tens of billions, so she wasn’t entirely sure.

"It’s located in the city center. The footprint isn’t large, but the vertical space is considerable—120 floors, 605.7 meters tall... The interior is a bare frame with no furnishings, very suitable for your Pollution Body to move around in." Su Yuqing looked over the data, couldn’t help but smile, and looked up at Feng Ling. "No problem. I should be able to apply for a few years of usage rights for you. This place is very suitable."

Feng Ling smiled too.

Hehehe...

Su Yuqing’s tone changed. He looked at Feng Ling with a half-smile. "If I manage to secure this for you, you’re not going to just leave it empty and not live there, are you?"

Feng Ling: "..."

’Alright, alright, I get it. You just want me to stay in Qingjiang City and not run all over the place, right?’

Feng Ling nodded and gave Su Yuqing an "OK" gesture.

Su Yuqing put away his phone. "Then there are no other issues. I’ll arrange for a construction team to renovate the Financial Center Building’s sales office and get the plumbing and electricity set up. We’ll deduct the cost from your bonus. Is that alright?"

Feng Ling: "...Alright."

’He really knows how to pull people’s strings. Once I’ve spent money on the place, how could I bear to abandon it and move somewhere else?’

"It’s getting late, so I won’t keep you from your rest," Su Yuqing said as he stood up. "The renovations will take about ten days. I’ll contact you with any updates. In the meantime, you can stay and have some fun in Yuquan City for a few days. Relax."

Feng Ling walked him to the door and couldn’t help but ask, "Captain Su, why has your hair turned white?"

Su Yuqing stopped in his tracks, a trace of embarrassment on his face. "There’s been a lot going on recently... I’ve probably been too busy and haven’t gotten enough rest."

"Is it related to the Maze over in Daling Forest?" Feng Ling asked curiously.

"Is it that obvious..." Su Yuqing said, looking sheepish. "Ye Zheng entered the Maze around the same time you did. Daling Forest doesn’t have a Maze Administrator. The Maze’s entrances and exits rely entirely on detection by the research team’s instruments, which is very dangerous. I am indeed a bit worried."

Feng Ling had never met Ye Zheng, but she had heard her name mentioned by others more than once. She was said to be incredibly powerful—the elite of the elite among the entire Inspector team.

’The Inspection Bureau wouldn’t give up on someone that strong so easily, would they?’

Feng Ling asked, "So when does the Inspection Bureau plan to send a rescue team?"

"A rescue..." Su Yuqing said hesitantly. "Actually, Ye Zheng sent a message saying that she had already killed the Maze Master. She said she would leave the Maze once the sample collection was finished. So, we believe the team is only temporarily trapped. Now isn’t the right time to send a rescue team."

"Ye Zheng can still send messages from inside the Maze?" Feng Ling was surprised. "We couldn’t get any signal at all when we were on Sanqing Mountain."

"That’s because the Maze on Sanqing Mountain is a complete instance. You can think of the Sanqing Mountain Maze as a whole glass bottle, with the mouth of the bottle being the entrance. But Daling Forest is a shattered glass bottle. If we want to get inside, many places can serve as an entrance," Su Yuqing explained patiently. "And because the bottle is broken, the contents can leak out into the outside world, causing pollution. The cracks intersect with the real world, which is why a signal can get through occasionally."

He paused, then continued after a moment of silence, "I have faith in Ye Zheng. Since she has already killed the Maze Master, the entire Maze shouldn’t pose too much of a danger. Perhaps she’ll lead the team out tomorrow."

Hearing this, Feng Ling said, "Maybe they just got lost. The Maze is huge. I was exhausted just from going up and down the mountain a few times on Sanqing Mountain."

’The greatest threat in a Maze is the Maze Master. Since even the Maze Master is dead, there shouldn’t be any major problems.’

’Unless there’s some external interference.’

She thought for a moment, then asked Su Yuqing, "Did Ye Zheng’s message say anything else?"

Su Yuqing fell silent again.

After a while, he finally spoke, slowly. "Before she lost contact, she sent me a private message. But I’m not sure... if this message is related to her disappearance."

He hadn’t originally planned to tell anyone else.

Because after Ye Zheng entered the Maze, all her messages were sent to the special operations discussion group. Only this one message was sent to him alone.

’Why would she do that?’

’Either the message has nothing to do with the Maze operation, or Ye Zheng has grown suspicious of the operation team... She doesn’t trust someone in the group.’

But Su Yuqing felt that Feng Ling was trustworthy.

He didn’t say anything, silently taking out his phone, pulling up the message, and showing it to Feng Ling—

There was only a single word in the chat box:

Squirrel.

Feng Ling froze for a second. ’What does squirrel mean?’

"Get some rest," Su Yuqing said with a smile. "I’m sure Ye Zheng will complete her mission successfully."

Feng Ling: "..."

’You’re obviously super worried, okay? Your hair has practically turned as white as an old man’s!’

After seeing Su Yuqing off, Feng Ling’s mind was in turmoil.

She was tormented by an itching curiosity.

’What the hell does squirrel mean?’

’Does it mean a squirrel in the great forest, or a Squirrel Card? Or something else entirely???’

’No, I’m too curious.’

’This is unbearable!’

Feng Ling went next door to find Li Qing, wondering if he had managed to run off yet.

Shuffling over to the next room in her slippers, she found the lock was flimsy. It didn’t take much effort to force it open—

Inside, the window was wide open. Rain drifted in, spattering the carpet by the window.

A bedsheet had been torn into strips, then tied together to form a thick rope. One end was fastened to the leg of the bed, the other dangled out the window.

Feng Ling poked her head out to look. There was Li Qing, painstakingly climbing down through the torrential downpour.

’Is his escape method really this primitive?’

Feng Ling grabbed an umbrella from a cabinet, extended two of her Teeth and Claws, bit onto the windowsill, and flipped herself out, landing next to Li Qing.

She kindly held the umbrella over him and asked, "Daoist, do you know what ’squirrel’ means?"

Li Qing was on the verge of a mental breakdown.

’Can’t you show me a little respect?!’

’I’m trying to escape here!!!’
