Chapter 143: Chapter 141: Wash Face

"Why’d you stop reading?" Feng Ling was engrossed, urging her, "Go on, keep reading."

Huangfu Miaomiao looked flustered. "I-It’s actually nothing worth reading. They’re just delusional."

Feng Ling said amiably, "How can you say that? I think they’re quite ambitious. Go on and read, I’m enjoying this."

Since her Pollution Value had dropped below 20%, her temper had improved significantly. She was practically a gentle and kind "mom."

Huangfu Miaomiao read with a pained expression, "...We really should teach the Inspection Bureau a lesson. There’s a problem in the Northern Forest, too. The Maze fusion was interrupted, and all the Pollution Bodies in the forest were wiped out by humans. We’ve lost another place to earn points. If this keeps up, how are we supposed to survive? Are we going to rely on the three- and five-point daily tasks the system releases every week? —What’s wrong with doing daily tasks? At least we could get by!"

The last sentence was Huangfu Miaomiao’s own.

Feng Ling asked her, "Is there anything more concrete? Like, when do they plan to show up?"

Huangfu Miaomiao scrolled through the forum posts and shook her head. "It’s all just complaining. Nothing concrete. I assume even if there were, they wouldn’t post it on the forum... They must be communicating privately."

"Good point." Feng Ling mused. ’Even though the Alien Species seem to stick together on the forum, they’re actually all wary and distrustful of one another. So they’d never just expose their plans and movements on the forum. They must have another method of contact, like... a game guild or something. Do they have those?’

Huangfu Miaomiao shook her head again. "No, there’s only a party-up feature."

A few seconds later, she suddenly remembered something and added, "There are no guilds, but there is one player organization called the Star Association. They’re supposedly really powerful. Members of the Star Association have fought the Abyss."

Feng Ling laughed in spite of herself. "Are they trying to be cute? What a childish name."

Huangfu Miaomiao’s eyes went wide. "Cute? What’s cute about it? The thought that they actually tried to kill the Abyss is terrifying to me."

"Feng Ling!" From the entrance to the dining hall, a beaming Pei Xianjue called out as she walked in.

"Good morning~" She sat down without waiting for an invitation, glanced at the empty, leftover-strewn plates on the table, and chuckled. "I was planning to treat you two to lunch. Think you’ll still have room for it later?"

"Of course." Feng Ling asked, "Where are we eating?"

"Right here at the Inspection Bureau. I hired a chef, and all the ingredients were flown in this morning. I promise you won’t be disappointed." As she spoke, Pei Xianjue glanced around. "Why don’t I see the Daoist? Doesn’t he eat breakfast? ...Oh, right, I forgot. The Daoist is fasting."

Feng Ling fought back a laugh, lowering her head to noisily slurp her egg-drop rice wine.

Huangfu Miaomiao, who was sitting next to her, said, "That Daoist escaped last night!"

After returning to her room the previous night, Feng Ling had told Huangfu Miaomiao about Li Qing’s escape, treating it like a funny story.

"Escaped?" Pei Xianjue froze for a second, then quickly pulled out her phone to make a call. "How does a whole person just disappear without anyone noticing? There are cameras on every floor. How did he get out...?"

Once the call connected, Pei Xianjue said immediately, "This is Deputy Captain Pei Xianjue. Notify the security department and check on room 904."

Pei Xianjue waited a moment, phone in hand, then nodded slightly. "Alright, I understand... Mm-hmm, report it to Captain Shen. He’ll decide what to do."

Pei Xianjue hung up, exclaiming, "The security team found a rope of bedsheets hanging from his window. That’s the ninth floor! The nerve on that guy."

Feng Ling laughed even harder.

Pei Xianjue stared. "Was he afraid we were going to experiment on him? Headquarters does have some experimental protocols planned, but his safety would have been guaranteed. Besides, the body he’s logged into was originally human. Cooperating with our experiments is the least he could do. And yet he escaped..."

Feng Ling suppressed her laughter and asked, "Can’t you just check the surveillance footage and bring him back?"

"It’ll be tough. Security said some of the wiring is damaged. The marks look like they’ve been gnawed on by a small animal. Maybe the Inspection Bureau has a rat problem." Pei Xianjue frowned. "I hate rats."

Feng Ling burst out laughing. "HAHAHAHAHA!"

"Whatever. Let Captain Shen worry about it." Pei Xianjue immediately dropped the subject and turned to Feng Ling with a smile. "After breakfast, let’s go get facials. My treat~"

"Facials?"

"You know, skincare! A little pampering!"

Feng Ling figured she had nothing better to do that morning, so she agreed. After breakfast, she and Huangfu Miaomiao followed Pei Xianjue to try it out.

It was an in-house service. Several estheticians brought all sorts of products and equipment to the Inspection Bureau. After passing through multiple security checkpoints, they set up in Pei Xianjue’s room to provide the service.

It was Feng Ling’s first time, and she found it all very novel.

’I never realized humans had so many tricks when it came to working on their faces.’

First came a skin analysis, then a facial cleanse, followed by an exfoliating product to remove dead skin cells, and then a facial massage to promote blood circulation and lymphatic drainage...

After the whole series of procedures, a thick, cream-based mask was applied to their faces.

Feng Ling glanced in the mirror and thought that with the mask on, she looked a lot like Huangfu Miaomiao did when wearing her skull mask.

Huangfu Miaomiao’s face was also covered in the mask, and she was clearly enjoying herself.

Feng Ling turned to ask Pei Xianjue, "How long do we have to keep this stuff on?"

"About half an hour. No rush~" Pei Xianjue said, lying on a treatment bed covered with a pale pink towel. She waved a hand lazily. "Lie down, lie down. We’re getting hair treatments after this."

Feng Ling lay down and closed her eyes, remarking, "You have it pretty cushy as a Deputy Captain. The Deputy Captain at the Qingjiang Branch is swamped every single day."

"Haha!" Pei Xianjue laughed. "Don’t be too jealous. There’s a reason Qingjiang City is classified as a high-risk zone. Alien Species activity is much more frequent there, always leading to major cases. Here in Yuquan City, things are definitely much more peaceful. Since I became Deputy Captain, my dispatch record is only six calls. Four of those were just citizens making false reports, mistaking regular humans for Alien Species."

With her eyes still closed, Feng Ling asked, "And the other two?"

"The other two times..." The smile on Pei Xianjue’s face faded slightly. "One was an Alien Species attacking a shop, and the other was a Pollution Body that crawled out of the sewers. Luckily, Liang Zhou took care of them before they could become a bigger threat."

The thought of Liang Zhou made Pei Xianjue’s mood a little somber, but she quickly composed herself. She smiled and said, "Are you two free this afternoon? Want to come with me to some interviews? I need to hire a bodyguard to fill Liang Zhou’s position. You could help me screen them, what do you say?"

Feng Ling politely declined. "I can’t. My two little ones have been cooped up in the room all day. I need to find an empty spot this afternoon to let them run around for a bit. Otherwise, they’ll tear the place apart."

Pei Xianjue immediately replied, "The interviews are at the Yuquan Forest Farm! There’s a huge grassy field there. I can have a driver bring a big van over to pick them up. How about it? Come on, let’s all go together."

"A huge grassy field, you say..." Feng Ling considered it. "Alright then, let’s go."
