Alien Species Invasion? I Kill Them Back.
Chapter 145 - 143: What a CoincidenceChapter 145: Chapter 143: What a Coincidence
Ever since the Cat Spider and Cat Owl appeared on the lawn, the group of people attending the interview grew restless.
Everyone had seen the news. They knew the mysterious person who had broken through the Maze with Pei Xianjue had a Pet that resembled a spider-cat. Putting two and two together, it was easy to guess that Feng Ling, standing beside Pei Xianjue, was that very same mysterious person from the news!
In an instant, almost everyone simultaneously straightened their backs, wanting to make a good impression.
More than just passing the interview, they yearned for the approval of someone so powerful.
Among these people, the most excited was, without a doubt, Fang Ye.
Fang Ye had never imagined that by coming to the Pei Group’s interview, he would meet Feng Ling again. It was as if the gears of fate had turned full circle, pulling him back into the vortex of powerful figures.
Perhaps in the near future, his ordinary life would become a momentous Chapter in the annals of history.
At this thought, Fang Ye’s blood boiled with excitement. His eyes practically glowed as he stared at Feng Ling, wishing he could run up and ask her, ’Do you remember me?’
Unfortunately, Feng Ling only gave the crowd a passing glance, her gaze not lingering on his face for even half a second.
Fang Ye felt a pang of disappointment.
...
Feng Ling intentionally let her gaze sweep over each interviewee’s face.
Their eyes were all filled with curiosity and excitement, except for one—the Alien Species in the gray T-shirt, who deliberately avoided her gaze, not daring to look her in the eye.
That was to be expected.
’After all, in the eyes of an Alien Species, I have a conspicuous ’Boss’ marker floating above my head. It’s probably afraid that looking for too long will give it away.’
’It probably never expected that, in this situation, *not* looking at me is what makes it look suspicious.’
’In any case, this one’s composure is commendable. It hasn’t bolted at the sight of me like Li Qing did.’
A small smile played on Feng Ling’s lips as she, too, feigned ignorance and smiled at the interviewees.
The large and imposing Baozi stood at the front. His good-natured demeanor from when he was with Pei Xianjue was gone, replaced by a stern expression as he announced:
"Today’s interview is to select a bodyguard for Deputy Captain Pei! This person must not only be strong and quick-witted, but also possess tenacious willpower! Because if we select you, it won’t just be to protect Deputy Pei’s safety. It will be to build a team to fight the Alien Species, to charge to the front lines of danger, and to protect all of Yuquan City!"
The interviewees were all visibly moved.
Under the hot sun, these young people—tall and short, stout and slim—stood ramrod straight, their eyes filled with a soldier’s resolve.
Baozi shouted, "We have prepared a sufficiently open area for this interview, along with plenty of sandbags and knives. We hope you will all be in your best condition! Show us your strength! Now, you will demonstrate one by one, according to your number! Begin!—"
As luck would have it, the man in the gray T-shirt had drawn number 1.
Feng Ling watched him with anticipation.
The man looked to be in his twenties, like a recent college graduate with a slightly scholarly air. He politely said to Baozi, "Hello, I think I’m a little carsick. Could I possibly go last?"
Baozi frowned, glanced down at his resume, and said, "Go to the back of the line. Number 2, you’re up."
Feng Ling was a little disappointed.
But then again, it was understandable. ’The Alien Species is most likely here to scout things out. Of course it would want to see what abilities everyone else has before revealing its own.’
Number 2 was a slender girl with heavy makeup. Her face seemed to be coated in a layer of glittery powder.
She walked forward confidently and introduced herself, "My Card is the Netherworld Butterfly, and my ability is Hallucination. My body can secrete a scale powder that causes people to hallucinate. During my demonstration, please keep some distance from me to avoid being affected."
Hearing this, everyone took a few steps back.
Feng Ling asked with great interest, "If you’re hallucinating, how long does it take to recover?"
The girl held her head high and puffed out her chest. "Depending on the amount of scale powder the target absorbs, it can take anywhere from one to twenty minutes."
"Is it only absorbed by breathing it in, or can it be absorbed through skin contact as well?" Feng Ling continued to ask.
"Skin contact works, but it’s not as effective as inhalation," the girl replied.
"Are the contents of the hallucination controllable?"
"Uncontrollable."
"If it’s raining, is the scale powder still effective?"
"I’ve never tried..."
Having asked enough questions, Feng Ling nodded. "You may begin your demonstration."
The girl looked at her hesitantly, then glanced down at her own feet—she was standing too close to Feng Ling.
Just as she was hesitating, wondering if she should take a few steps back, she heard Feng Ling say, "It’s fine. I’m just curious and want to experience the hallucination. Go ahead and demonstrate your ability."
The girl’s eyes widened slightly. "...Okay. I-I’ll demonstrate now."
The girl raised her right hand, fingers spread, with the back of her hand facing Feng Ling. Then, with a gentle wave from left to right, she flipped her palm over, stirring the air and sending the scale powder drifting forward, most of it settling onto Feng Ling’s skin.
Feng Ling felt her vision begin to warp, as if she were looking at everything through a funhouse mirror. It was fascinating.
In her eyes, the girl’s slender body turned into a wavy line, and mushrooms with two legs sprouted from the surrounding grass, hopping and skipping in a circle around her.
The effect lasted for about ten seconds before it began to fade, and then everything returned to normal.
Feng Ling turned her head left and right. The long-legged mushrooms were gone.
"It was a bit short, but quite interesting," she said, turning back to Pei Xianjue.
The girl was astonished. She hadn’t expected Feng Ling to recover so quickly.
Pei Xianjue wasn’t entirely satisfied. "Coordinating in a fight would likely be difficult, since the scale powder doesn’t distinguish between friend and foe."
The girl’s face fell with disappointment.
But Pei Xianjue offered some encouragement, "However, this ability has great potential. I believe it can be applied to real combat in a more suitable way in the future."
The girl perked up again.
Next up was number 3, a young man with slightly dark skin.
Number 3’s Card was the Human Bear. He could transform into a giant grizzly bear of immense strength, sending a stack of sandbags on the lawn flying with a single punch.
Then it was Fang Ye’s turn. His Card was the Mermaid.
The grounds here weren’t suitable for his full demonstration, so he only transformed his upper body into that of a merman, his two arms becoming sharp as spears.
Trying to score extra points, Fang Ye made a point of saying, "I had the honor of participating in the operation in the underground caverns of Jiangkou City and have experience facing Pollution Bodies directly. So, in terms of mental fortitude, I believe I am stronger than most people."
Feng Ling finally remembered. "Oh, the underground caverns... Have I met you before? Your name is..."
"Fang Ye," he whispered, reminding her. "’Fang’ as in ’direction,’ ’Ye’ as in ’wilderness.’ You even lent me a pack of wet wipes back then."
Feng Ling had long forgotten about the wet wipes, but she smiled. "I didn’t expect to run into you in Yuquan City. What a coincidence."
Pei Xianjue asked Feng Ling, "You two know each other?"
"Mm, we’ve met once," Feng Ling replied.
The interviews continued.
Interviewee number 5 stepped forward to demonstrate their ability.
Fang Ye returned to the line, and the people around him started talking to him:
"Dude, you’re amazing! You actually went on that underground cavern mission with the big shot? What was it like? Was it super dangerous?"
"Yeah, tell us about it."
A faint blush crept up Fang Ye’s face. At that moment, he felt like he was someone special.
