Chapter 147: Chapter 145: Big Eyes
A shout of "Xing Guang!" put Feng Ling and Pei Xianjue on alert.
They looked toward the distant fight. After shouting that name, Xiao Zhiwen transformed into a giant bear, grabbed two interviewees, and swung them like human weapons at the crowd!
The others, afraid of harming their own, didn’t dare to attack. After throwing the two men, Xiao Zhiwen used a jumping ability to leap seven or eight meters into the air, scattering scale powder in all directions!
Fang Ye covered his nose and mouth, his arm transforming into a sharp fin to stab at Xiao Zhiwen. Just as Xiao Zhiwen landed, he activated the Hard Armor ability, blocking the blow! He then switched to Fang Ye’s Half-fishman form and swept his long spines in a circle, forcing everyone around him to scramble back.
"What’s going on?!" Pei Xianjue’s face darkened. "Why did he suddenly get so strong?"
"He didn’t get stronger, he got smarter." Feng Ling narrowed her eyes. "His switching between Card Abilities has become more logical, as if someone is teaching him how to fight."
Pei Xianjue was fuming. "I’m holding bodyguard interviews today, and this thing shows up to crash my party. If I let it get away, how can I show my face?!"
Xiao Zhiwen, who had been on the defensive, was now holding his own against fifteen people, moving with ease through the crowd.
"Xiao Ling! Do something!" Pei Xianjue pleaded with Feng Ling.
Feng Ling found it a bit tricky. "You just posted a million-dollar bounty. The fight over there is in full swing. If I go over now, it’ll look like I’m snatching the reward from a bunch of kids."
Baozi, standing nearby, felt a corner of their eye twitch. ’They’re all young people in their early twenties, just like you. How are they kids...’
"Then what do we do?" Pei Xianjue asked anxiously.
Just then, a sharp screech echoed from the sky—
Feng Ling’s Cat Owl, which had been circling above, suddenly dove toward Xiao Zhiwen, carrying with it an unstoppable pressure!
Xiao Zhiwen’s movements froze instantly.
Not only did he freeze, but the interviewees attacking him also stiffened.
Pei Xianjue said in surprise, "That pressure?"
She turned her head to look at Feng Ling. "Your owl can use Spiritual Suppression too?!"
The Cat Owl’s suppression was clearly not as strong as Feng Ling’s. It only made people’s reactions sluggish and their bodies stiff, without immediately forcing them to their knees.
Even so, it was astonishing enough.
Feng Ling had always treated her two little ones as useless accessories, thinking they weren’t very bright. So, she had never considered that Skills could be taught.
At that moment, the Cat Owl completed its dive! Its powerful talons gripped its prey firmly, the force of the dive slamming Xiao Zhiwen to the ground!
It continued to beat its wings, trying to carry its prey into the sky, but the weight of a grown man was clearly beyond the Cat Owl’s capacity. It struggled to lift him half a meter before being forced to drop him again.
The Cat Spider, however, wasted no time and pounced! While the others were still affected by the suppression, it lunged like a massive, starving black dog, its sharp fangs piercing its prey’s neck!
The Cat Owl grew frantic. It grabbed Xiao Zhiwen’s head with its talons, flapped its wings even more powerfully, and roared at the Cat Spider as if to say, ’This is my prey!’
The Cat Spider, using its size advantage, refused to release its bite.
They pulled and tore at each other, neither willing to yield, until with a sickening RIP!—Xiao Zhiwen’s head was separated from his body.
Everyone: "..."
A few of the interviewees, who had never seen such a gory scene, threw up on the spot.
Pei Xianjue was silent for a moment, then whispered to Baozi beside her, "The ones who threw up—get their names. Add a few extra psychological counseling sessions to their training."
"Understood." Baozi nodded slightly.
Feng Ling felt a bit awkward. She should have stopped them sooner, but she was curious to see if the Cat Spider had a suppression ability like the Cat Owl, so she’d decided to watch a little longer.
As a result of watching for just that little bit longer, the Alien Species was killed by her pets.
Its death was a small matter. The main problem was... the other interviewees were still trying to earn that one-million-dollar bounty.
Feng Ling turned to Pei Xianjue. "Um, the bounty... you should probably give them something, right?"
Pei Xianjue took a deep breath, patted her shoulder, and said, "Leave it to me."
Feng Ling communicated with the Cat Spider and Cat Owl’s consciousnesses, telling them to let go of their respective halves of Xiao Zhiwen.
Neither was very happy about it.
The Cat Owl, huffing indignantly, dropped the head from the sky. The Cat Spider licked up a few mouthfuls of blood on the ground before reluctantly crawling away.
The interviewees all gathered curiously around the corpse.
Pei Xianjue strode over, clapped her hands lightly, and addressed the crowd. "Alright, break it up, break it up... Since you’ve decided to become Hunters, you need to get used to situations like this. Treat the unexpected as the norm. Our daily job is to deal with these elusive monsters. All of you performed very well just now. Everyone will receive a 100,000 bonus. The interview results will be sent to your phones tomorrow."
Seeing the cue, Baozi spoke up. "Thank you all for attending this interview. The Inspection Bureau will handle things from here. For now, please return to the bus and rest. The driver will take you back to the city."
Under Baozi’s direction, all the interviewees returned to the bus.
Fang Ye looked back at Feng Ling reluctantly, his heart pounding. ’This meeting felt too rushed, too brief,’ he thought. ’I’ve grown so much recently, I wonder if she noticed...’
He knew his mindset was a bit unusual, but he couldn’t suppress the excitement in his heart.
’No rush, no rush. As long as I pass this interview, I’ll get closer and closer to her.’
......
...
"No Card dropped. It got away." Pei Xianjue kicked the corpse impatiently.
"Yep, it logged off." Feng Ling sighed as well.
That was the most annoying thing about killing Alien Species—they could log off at any time.
Even though Huangfu Miaomiao had once said that players faced penalties for logging off, like losing points or something, it did little to soothe the humans’ frustration.
Feng Ling crouched down and began to rummage through the clothes on the corpse.
"What are you doing?" Pei Xianjue asked, confused.
"Didn’t it shout ’Xing Guang’ earlier?" Feng Ling said as she searched. "I suspect it was wearing some kind of electronic device, like an earpiece. Someone was remotely instructing it. It must have had accomplices to have come to the interview..."
Pei Xianjue frowned. "No way. Before they came, Baozi had them go through a security check. For confidentiality, all their phones, watches, and things like that were put in temporary storage."
"Strange..."
Just as Pei Xianjue had said, Feng Ling searched for a long time but couldn’t find any suspicious objects.
She pulled her hand back, muttering to herself, "Then why did it shout ’Xing Guang, save me’...? It must have shouted that because it was certain the other party could hear. The change in its fighting style later on proves that."
Just then, Feng Ling noticed that the skin between the corpse’s collarbones seemed slightly different in color and was faintly raised.
She reached out and pressed gently. There was a round, bulging sphere between the collarbones.
Tracing along the edge, she felt a layer of something like an eyelid.
Startled, she flipped the eyelid back. An enormous eye was growing in the space between the collarbones!
It was about the length of an index finger, and the pupil was a dead, grayish-purple color.
As if possessed, Feng Ling couldn’t help but say, "How beautiful."
Pei Xianjue was speechless. "What’s beautiful about it? I still prefer double eyelids."
