Chapter 148: Chapter 146: Aesthetics

Feng Ling smiled.

She knew Pei Xianjue was making fun of her sense of aesthetics.

This kind of beauty, of course, had nothing to do with whether one had double eyelids. She just felt that an eye growing right on the collarbone possessed a strange, formal beauty. It was like a necklace, with the eye as the pendant resting right there. It was quite beautiful.

As the two of them spoke, the eye’s color grew even duller, and it looked as if it was about to fall off.

Feng Ling reached out and gently plucked it, pulling the entire eye off.

The eye rapidly dehydrated in her palm and died, losing all signs of life.

Pei Xianjue’s entire face scrunched up. She rubbed the goosebumps on her arms and said, "That’s so disgusting..."

Feng Ling gently pinched the eye between her fingers, turning it over and over to inspect it.

The eye had now become dry and flat. It was a drab gray, and after losing its moisture, its weight became negligible. It felt like picking up a sun-dried clam from a riverbank.

"This should be a Card Ability..." Feng Ling mused as she observed the eye in her hand. ’To plant an eye on another person, allowing you to see what they see and hear what they hear... maybe even connect your consciousness with theirs. How interesting...’

She looked up and asked Pei Xianjue, "Can I have this thing?"

Pei Xianjue looked disgusted. "Why would you want something so gross..."

Feng Ling smiled, holding the eye up to the sunlight and squinting as she admired it. "Don’t you think it looks a lot like a badge?"

"I do not." Pei Xianjue couldn’t help but say, "Xiao Ling, I think you should wash your hands with disinfectant."

Feng Ling glanced at her. "Deputy Captain Pei, if you’re such a neat freak about Alien Species, are you going to carry a spray bottle of alcohol with you into battle from now on?"

"I can use my flames to disinfect myself with high heat," Pei Xianjue retorted.

Feng Ling chuckled, tossed the dried, flattened eye high into the air, then caught it and stuffed it into her pocket. "Fine, you win."

She turned and walked toward the van, planning to show the eye to Huangfu Miaomiao as well. Perhaps it would offer a clue.

Pei Xianjue followed behind her, sighing. "What a scare... I never expected an Alien Species to be capable of something like this. I always thought they just killed mindlessly."

"They’re probably getting anxious," Feng Ling said with a smile. "Losing two Mazes in a row is like losing two granaries. So they want to get rid of nuisances like us."

Pei Xianjue said, annoyed, "I need to hurry up and pick a bodyguard. It’ll be a problem if an Alien Species shows up next time and there’s no one around to help... Damn it, the break-in period alone will take at least a month."

"Take your time~" Feng Ling soothed her.

One after the other, they got back into the vehicle.

Feng Ling took out the dry, flattened, gray eye and showed it to Huangfu Miaomiao.

It was the first time Huangfu Miaomiao had seen such a thing, and she couldn’t identify it. Feng Ling then told her about the Alien Species shouting "Xing Guang," but she still looked completely bewildered.

Seeing her dazed and confused look, Feng Ling figured she’d have to find Li Qing about this matter.

’I wonder where he’s run off to now. Did he listen to me and go back to Sanqing Mountain?’

The bus carrying the interviewees left the forest farm. Feng Ling and Pei Xianjue remained behind, waiting for the Special Attack Team and Cleaner Fish dispatched by the Yuquan Branch to arrive at the scene.

「One hour later—」

The scene of the incident was cordoned off. The body was placed in a body bag and loaded onto a vehicle, and the Cleaner Fish began their sterilization work.

The surrounding air began to smell unpleasant.

Feng Ling made the Cat Spider and Cat Owl return to the truck. They clearly hadn’t had enough fun, and the cramped space made them uncomfortable. They kept crying out at Feng Ling in protest.

Feng Ling raised her hand and bonked them on the head a couple of times.

They quieted down.

"What do you want me to do? You two know what our living situation is like!" Feng Ling slammed the truck’s cargo door shut with a CLANG.

Her feelings were quite complicated.

When they had just hatched, she had complained they were too small. Back then, she’d even criticized herself: ’It’s my first time being a "mom," so I have no experience. Next time, I should choose a larger creature as the flesh-and-blood base for hatching.’

Now she understood. There was no such thing as having the best of both worlds. A larger size meant a larger appetite and a greater need for space. Raising them was a real pain!

Feng Ling sighed, returned to the van, and said to Pei Xianjue, "Let me borrow the truck driver. I’m going to take those two idiots somewhere else to run around a bit more."

"Sure," Pei Xianjue said, turning her head to ask Huangfu Miaomiao, "Miao Miao, what about you? Are you going back to the Inspection Bureau?"

Huangfu Miaomiao shook her head, determined to stay with Feng Ling.

"Then when will you be back?" Pei Xianjue sighed. "I was hoping to treat you to dinner."

Feng Ling teased her, "You haven’t planned out my entire schedule for the next few days, have you?"

"I have," Pei Xianjue said. "Tomorrow morning, we’re going to the shooting range. In the afternoon, you’ll meet with the designer. In the evening, we’ll go to a concert. If you don’t like that, we can see a play or a movie. And you still haven’t been to the most famous food street in Yuquan City."

Feng Ling smiled. "Let’s save it for next time."

Compared to Qingjiang City, Yuquan City was a bit livelier. There were things to do at night, whereas the food street in Qingjiang City turned into a ghost town as soon as evening fell.

Feng Ling and Huangfu Miaomiao got into the truck and told the driver to head toward the Sanqing Mountain Scenic Area.

She closed her eyes to rest in the truck, tracking Li Qing’s location along a ribbon of mist generated by her mark—

Meanwhile, on the bus returning to the city, things were practically exploding with excitement. Everyone was animatedly discussing the battle that had just taken place.

They were all young and easily fired up. They had just fought an Alien Species, and even though they had been scared earlier, all that remained now was the passionate rush that came after a moment of heroism.

Fang Ye had clearly become the center of attention among them.

"Fang Ye! You were a beast back there! When that thing scattered its scale powder, you were the only one who dared to charge in!"

Fang Ye smiled humbly. "My ability is Fishman. I’m covered in a layer of scales, so as long as I protect my mouth and nose, I don’t have to worry about absorbing the scale powder."

Someone else said, "Nah, it’s really because you’re stronger! Everyone was panicking at that moment. Take me, for example. My ability is Human Bear. Theoretically, my fur should also block the scale powder, but I didn’t even think of that at the time. All I could think about was dodging."

"Yeah, Fang Ye is probably the only one who’s going to pass this interview."

"I think so too. Having combat experience really makes a difference. Fang Ye even took part in the operation in that underground cave. Before it was discovered, almost no one made it out alive. Anyone who went in, whether human or Alien Species, died!"

"Fang Ye, you’ve gotta look out for us from now on, haha!"

Immersed in the chorus of praise, Fang Ye felt a warmth spread through his chest. He was a little giddy, feeling like he was one step closer to his dream of becoming a hero.

And one step closer to her.
